Watching the Republican debate last night I came away with an even clearer sense that Mitt Romney will be the Republican candidate if the party has any sense.

He remained cool, calm and collected while Michelle Bachman and Tim Pawlenty entered into a Minnesota slug fest that would have suited their former governor and ex-wrestler Jesse Venture better.

Romney has clearly decided that it is the economy stupid and that he will not be drawn into personal battles with the other contenders.

He is telegenic, smart, looks the part and has hardly a hair out of place in contrast to several others who seem to flail away with Gingrich the worst in that regard.

His attack on the media was a predictable as it was lame. A once powerful icon of the Republican Party is going down to ignominius defeat before our eyes.

As for Michele Bachmann I already have the sense she is yesterday's gal. The crazed looking cover in Newsweek, those attacks on her migraines and her husbands dotty 'treatment' plans for Gays has harmed her in the eyes of ordinary Americans.

The one misisng presence of course was Rick Perry and he will be Romney's greatest rival it is now obvious.

Sarah Palin is heading into Iowa this weekend as well of course but she is increasingly like the Barnum and Bailey exhibit, fascinating to look at but very little to say really.

As for the others they are really a nondescript lot, out of their depth at this level. Jon Hunstsman might be good but he seems far too mild-mannered for the red meat eaters in the GOP these days. Herman Cain rants about everything and should go back to making pizza.

Rick Santorum looks like a choir boy that lost his way to church and wandered into the debate. Ron Paul is a nice man but utterly off the wall withh his talk of a gold standard and no US Army.

My takeaway? it is Romney's to lose and only Perry can stop him.

He's dumber than dog sh-t.
Say hello to the next President of the United States. Rick Perry!
Perry/Romney/Bachmann,tweedle dumb, tweedle dumber and Alice in wonderland at the Iowa teaparty.Obama is safe.
Boy! Do you have a ot to learn about politics. Romney carries a lot of baggage with him in this presidentual run. His Romneycare for Mass. (same as obamacare) will be hard for him to overcome and he believes in man-made global warming. These 2 issues will defeat him. It will be between Michelle Bachman and Rick Perry. Romney may have won this debate but Michelle won Iowa!!!! You go girl!!!
Only one winner and that was Ron Paul, the rest of the dopes are either a pretty face/hair or running as a religious extremist. The U.S is running its self thin, Afganistan, Iraq, Libia, Pakistan and Mexico are quite enough to deal with as it is. Time to start worrying about our own situation.
"he hardly had a hair out of place" is this the standard by which you judge your presidential hopefuls
A glimpse of the Newt of old when contracts were made with America, not on her. It was his freshmen republican reps that brought about the flowering of the American economy during the Clinton administration. They raised taxes, paid for retraining of welfare takers to fit jobs that businesses needed filled and then gave those businesses tax breaks for hiring domestically. The grass roots pump priming worked where the trickle down of the previous two administrations did the trick and the fast food joints had to raise wages because their people were finding better full time jobs. So in 2000 we went back to trickle down, cut taxes on the rich, gave tax breaks to move jobs overseas and guess where America is to day. The taxes collected from all those new workers more than offset the tax breaks needed to create them and the training and the left overs went into deficite reduction. Sadly, Newt would have to take too big a pay cut ever to really consider running. His certificate mill makes him quite enough thank you. As for Rick P(A)rry (ala the Colbert pac ads,) Google "New Apostolic Reformation" and his connections, for some interesting insights into where his head is.
"Romney wins ... only Perry ..." Surly you jest! That ain't over until the Iowa Caucus and the not-so-fat lady gets Her chance ... and I don't mean that stupid fool and willing dupe of the demofascists, Face Lift Nancy.
What if Chris Christie throws his hat in the ring?
God help us if any of these people get in the White House.
Actually, I thought Newt's blast on the media was well done! In my opinion, I liked his, Caine's and Santorum's answers the best. Ron Paul had some good ideas but his view on the military was even over the top for me. I am becoming more and more of an isolationist but Paul took it way too far. Romney is almost too polished and I see him as another politician, not a leader.
