Rahm Emanuel may lose Chicago race over immigration reform

If Rahm Emanuel wants to take over from Mayor Richard Daley in Chicago he is going to have to earn it.

Last week's statement by Congressman Luis Gutierrez that he is forming an exploratory committe is a warning shot for Emanuel.

Gutierrez hates Manuel with a passion, The pair have had several shouting matches over immigration reform.

Gutierrez, by far the most passionate advocate of immigration reform in Congress, believes that it was Emanuel who slow tracked the issue within the White House and forced it off the president’s agenda as a must -do priority.

Back in May Gutierrez made it clear that Emanuel was seen as the blocking force within the White House.

"I don't think Rahm Emanuel is a positive influence on the immigration debate," Rep. Luis Gutierrez told the Chicago Fox affiliate. "I don't think he sees it as a core value of the Democratic Party, or a necessity that the American people need to be acted upon."

He also said Emanuel would never get his endorsement for Chicago mayor.

"He’s not to get my endorsement anytime soon. He should stay in the White House, but then he can go make millions in investment banking," Gutierrez said, referring to the Wall Street position Emanuel previously held.

Gutierrez a former Chicago City Councilman is now considering his own run for mayor -- but even if he doesn’t he seems sure to represent a major stumbling bock for Emanuel.

In the end, given the large Hispanic vote, Emanuel may well regret not getting immigration reform higher on the president's priority list.

Your correct Mman 3k is nothing but it is still used by the right as a fear mongering propaganda tool. Your level of illegal immigration is certainly worrisome and difficult to solve.By the way we have about 100,000 illegals come in by air and no one seems to worry. Easy to photograph a leaking hulk full of Sri Lankans i suppose.Or in your case observe Latinos fleeing across the desert.

Well Lad....I was using a bit of artistic license to color your comments on the treatment of our millions of illegal immigrants....But lad, I must confess, when I realized you only have to deal with 3K illegal aliens per year, that is really nothing. When you get flooded with millions, get back to me and let me know how you feel then.

How did I miss this one Moonsoonman.I never used the words cruel and barbaric let's stick to facts Amigo. We have a "HUGE" immigration problem in Aus, about 3000 boat people try to enter illegally each year. True they are held in air conditioned camps and assessed. They are given health checks and police checks. Most are then released into the community where they do their best to assimilate others are returned to their country of origin it's as simple as that. Temerity's drivel is what it is verbal diarrhea and narrow minded bigotry, you can almost feel the hate spewing from his orifice. the Muslim community do not wish temerity any harm they feel sad for him and his ilk.

Isn't it a bit premature to state that Rahm Emanuel may lose the mayor's race in Chicago since he hasn't even declared his intent to run yet? Right now there are 3 declared candidates, 22 mulling it over & 13 more rumored to run according to the lastest reports. http://www.progressillinois.com/posts/content/2010/09/10/whose-running-mayor

Well I don't know anything about that I always thought Americans were good people .No not cruel or barbaric at all here we have TV's and air-conditioning for Asylum seekers who then smash and destroy the facility claiming their right to enter our country illegally.Please spare me. Mostly Afghanis young men who in my opinion should be recruited into the army to help fight the Taliban and sent back to Afghanistan where our soldiers are giving their lives to do it for them.Instead they cower here form terrorist cells and foul mouth us calling us barking fogs and Infidels ect.The last I heard said was this country really belongs to them and not to us anyway( they didn't even give the aborigines credit.) Now I ask you is that the sort if immigrant to help make a country united and strong?.Add to that a woman who would not remove her berka to give evidence in court so the jury could actually see her face, They will not shake hands with a non Muslim businessman.Or leave their wife alone in the room with a European man ( Mmn?) I rest my case.Are Christians a bit soft in the head or what?

borefield that sounds right to me what you are saying.Good luck!Wish we had stricter imigration laws here in Australia.There are always lobbies pushng their own agenda.They make sure they and their's get positions of power and then there is nothing stopping them while the majority lay back and snore.

Gutierrez is promoting Illegal Emigration at any cost for his race of people. Please remember assisting the Irish or any other race is not in in interests. Why is it with the many different races in this country that the Hispanics get everything spoken and written in Spanish. What makes them so special above the Germans, Polish, Russians, all the different nationalities that have to fend for themselvs and learn English. They are still not satisfied. The congressman eccourages his race to enter Illegally into this country, avail of all the social programmes at taxpayers expense and feel it's their right. We need to wake up and soon. English will be the second language. I know there will be people who will judge me a racist, well so be it. I will fight for my rights to take back our American way of life. Learn our language and way of life. Work for a living and make a worth while contribution to the country. I do not like Emanuel either. Chicago politics spawns some very deceitful and crooked politians.Yes, there are a few Irish that come under that banner also. The voters will get what they deserve if they vote for either one.

Richard Daley has done a great job of being mayor of Chicago. He has turned the downtown area into a beautiful and safe place to live and work - and done it with panache. Maybe there's an Irish American woman waiting in the wings to take over...
