Meghan McCain, the daughter of Republican Sen. John McCain, has blasted Arizona's new immigration law, setting up a clash with her father John who is the senior senator for Arizona.
Meghan - who attended rallies hosted by the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform - says the new law is "seriously flawed" and "essentially a license to pull someone over for being Hispanic."
"I believe it gives the state police a license to discriminate, and also, in many ways, violates the civil rights of Arizona residents," Meghan said in her blog post at The Daily Beast, titled, "Hate the Law, Not Arizonans."
"Simply put, I think it is a bad law that is missing the bigger picture of what is really going on with illegal immigration."
Once upon a time her father John McCain would have agreed with her.
He co-sponsored the Kennedy McCain bill in 2005 which would have given illegal immigrants a chance to earn legalization.
Now McCain is battling JD Hayworth for the Arizona senate seat and basically trying to out-right Hayworth on immigration.
Hayworth's go-to quote on immigration is basically puerile: "America's borders are being overrun by illegal aliens."
Meanwhile, McCain's daughter is a rare voice of reason in the so-called debate on immigration reform.
As Meghan rightly points out, the tough challenge needs real solutions, note more media posturing.
Once upon a time, that would have been her father's position too.

Everyone has an opinion, right or wrong. Come to this country and see what is going on before making up your minds about immigration. My grandparents were not illegals when they came to this country from Ireland. They did it the legal way !!!

This peice of White Trash really does hate America, and her Father. I'm sure she loves that Communist OBOZO.

I'm definitely for the new law in Arizona! Just listen to all the problems that Arizonians are having with illegals coming across the border, then see the federal government not doing anything to stop these problems, and Arizona was left no other alternative but to pass sufficient legislation to protect its citizens and their property rights!!

Megan is to the left of her father, who is losing in Arizona because HE, in turn, is to the left of the voters there (and nationwide, as a whole). Megan can speak her opinion like anyone else, but without any national following to speak of (again, because of her politics) I don't see how she's really a factor, here.

Totally for Megan!!! Young lady has a lot of honesty and CLASS!!! She has money but doesn't think she is better than everyone else. Would love to see a debate between her and Sarah Palin Sarah wouldn't stand a chance in hell.

I'm for the new Law I think this was a long time in the comming, they are crossing the borders and Not paying taxes and collecting welfaire for thier Ancor babies that they have NOT paid into. So In these hard times when Long time tax payer need some assistance It's not available. My Great grand parent came through Ellis Island and did it the right way so should they.

The waste of money on the "fence" should have never been started. Fences are made to be climbed over, go around the ends, dug under or have grafitti sprayed on. People who pay illegals to work should have to pay big enough fines so Americans can have jobs. If there were NO paying jobs for the illegal Mexicans, they wouldn't come!!

When I listen to ms. mccain, it makes me want to see the voting age raised to 40.

Hey, you don't know who will win the election in 2012.. my vote is still with the President.
jdi2269 | Apr 28, 2010, 04:09 PM EDT
IF WE HAD A PRESIDENT WITH B***S INSTEAD OF SUCKING UP TO THE HISPANIC VOTERS, WE WOULDN'T NEED THE STATES TO ADOPT LEGISLATION. THANK GOD THIS JERK WILL BE FOUR AND OUT!

Now if the Republicans are looking for a reasonable female presence with a solid pedigree, then Meghan is it. better than Sister Sarah or the Minnesota Mad Woman.

John McCain would do and say anything to win a vote. The man is without shame.
shania17 | Apr 28, 2010, 10:40 AM EDT
we have had this problem forever, the state is only trying to protect itself, why dosen't everyone who is complaining go & live in Arizona, the people are scared, why did Obama stop the building of the fence, the federal govt has done nothing & anyone who trys anything is scorned, megan should be ashamed of herself the way she goes after her father, I am glad that she is not in my family,
phoenixnurse | Apr 28, 2010, 09:56 AM EDT
She needs to get a real job and make amends with her father! He needs to retire and go home and tend to his family. Megan has nothing better to do than "Knock" her Father during a tough re-election...hardly normal behavior for any family member... you would think she would be out their campaigning for him like any loyal, loving family member! She's a spoiled brat trying to capitalize off of her father's fame!

The Arizona law follows federal law. The feds are not securing the border. Call the President and Congress and demand BORDER SECURITY.

"puerile?" you people are idiots!
tsullivan1218 | Apr 28, 2010, 07:36 AM EDT
Meghan McCain is the McCain in the family character. John misplaced his in 2008 with asking the ALASKAN SLUG to be his running mate. John McCain is not the man I thought him to be. So disappointing. Thank you John for what you contributed in the past but you have really went in the tank for the past 5 to 10 years. Time to retire John.
IrishAndProud | Apr 27, 2010, 01:22 AM EDT
And...this is a news story? It's irrelevant. Seventy percent of Arizonans (and the majority of Americans in general) are the ones who hold the real sway, here...that's why this law passed, in the first place, and why more will come, in the future.
Ajreaper | Apr 26, 2010, 06:03 PM EDT
LOL, Plug the hole? This law does nothing to secure the border it and it makes no secret about that- how does catching a block layer 6 months after he snuck in plug a hole?
RealIrish2010 | Apr 26, 2010, 05:24 PM EDT
Good on ya Girl!!! True to your heritage.. Proud of ya!!!
irishwxman | Apr 26, 2010, 05:11 PM EDT
WAH WAH WAH....cry me a river. If you want to stop a flood you have to plug the hole.
