Liberal media slamming Mitt Romney unfairly for actions in high school -- What’s next a demand that he apologizes for passing gas?

| Mitt Romney |
What will Mitt Romney have to apologize for next?
Being born perhaps, being Republican maybe, perhaps for having a strong marriage and successful kids.
The liberal media has really shown its colors on this occasion slamming Romney for being a high school bully --allegedly.
Show me a high school kid and I’ll show you someone who at some point or other bullied or was bullied.
It is called growing-up but in the PC world we live in it seems Romney’s actions almost a half century ago are fair game in this election.
Actually I’d like to know if he passed gas anytime in the past ten years and whether he apologized for that awful sin.
The GOP presidential hopeful has apologized for behavior that might have hurt anyone after he was described as the high school bully, picking on a boy he thought was gay, in a lengthy Washington Post report.
The article describes a young Romney as the leader of a pack of students at Cranbrook School, Michigan, where he bullied students, including one incident where he cut off a student’s long blonde hair as the victim screamed for help.
Oh my goodness, call the police and the Lord High Executioner?
Romney’s team told the Post he did not recall the incident, involving his fellow student who died in 2004, but other students described the attack as “vicious”.
The student with long blonde hair was John Lauber. A number of years later according to the Post’s article Lauber came out as gay to his friends and close family, after he was expelled from Cranbrook.
In the article described how Romney marched “out of his own room ahead of a prep school posse shouting about their plan to cut Lauber’s hair.
“It happened very quickly, and to this day it troubles me,” said Thomas Buford, the school’s wrestling champion, who said he joined Romney in restraining Lauber. Buford subsequently apologized to Lauber, who was “terrified,” he said. “What a senseless, stupid, idiotic thing to do.”
Romney the gay bully boy -- how convenient in the week that Obama came out agreeing with gay marriage. Except it was a half -century ago, kids are kids, cruel yes and stupid also.
But this incident does not belong in a presidential race.
On Thursday morning Romney apologized for his action while speaking to the
Fox show “Kilmeade and Friends”.
He told the host Brian Kilmeade “Back in high school, I did some dumb things and if anybody was hurt by that or offended, obviously I apologize for that…I participated in a lot of high jinks and pranks during high school and some might have gone too far and for that, I apologize.”
Romney denied that particular incident had occurred due to the sexual orientation.
“I don’t remember that incident. I certainly don’t believe that I thought the fellow was homosexual.
That was the furthest thing from our minds back in the 1960s, so that was not the case.”
Romney’s spokesperson told the Post “anyone who knows Mitt Romney knows that he doesn’t have a mean-spirited bone in his body. The stories of 50 years ago seem exaggerated and off base and Governor Romney has no memory of participating in these incidents.”
The Washington Post’s report also describes how Romney mistreated a near-blind teacher at the high school. According to report Romney allegedly guided the teacher, affectionately known as, “The Bat” into a closed door.
Up next how Romney tortured a house fly he captured in a bottle while Barack Obama fought for the fly’s release.

I was bullied in school and I got over it. But that type of bullying I received was annoying but non-violent typical of a school environment. It's only when bullying turns endless, unrelenting, violent or results in killing or injuring someone or severely impacts the learning environment that it becomes extreme enough. If Romney was the violent kind of bully, I would have a problem. He was just being another insensitive junior bigot with a teenage brain at the time. And agreed, he should have been more considerate and intelligent about not tying his dog to the roof of the family car for 12 long hours until the dog suffered distress. I am not voting for him for a zillion other reasons of a much more national impact of a negative type on the lives of millions.

WHY did he appologize in the first place and wait until now to do it? Because no one came forward u ntil he threw his hat in the ring for President. Had this story NOT come out it is not likely that after 50 yyears he would suddenly be sorry and say so. It is FAR, FAR, too late to appologize and have anyone think you are serious. He should want to forget those nasty incidents however, that IS NO EXCUSE. Trust me he did not forget, if he did we do not want some one that callous for President. He only wants to be president to force America into being mormans. We do not need this crimminal for President. VOTE NO ON MITT ROBBED-ME.

Mitt Romney is an idiot and the worst possible choice the GOP could have made in 2012.

what we are witness to is a classic example of what is refered to in Mormonism as "Lying for the Lord". If a question is asked and the answer will be counterproductive to your cause or cause the questioner to begin to distrust. Then you are obligated to lie for the greater glory. An in this case the Presidency of the United States. Romney has no position thus he has not changed or "flip flopped" on an issue. His only objective is to become President and fullfill the prophecies of Joesph Smith. Being, a Mormon will head the United States and lead first the nation and then the world into an era of Mormon Rule. Thus saving mankind from the depth os Hell. And the cluches of the brother of Jesus, Satin.

i think this attitude is COMPLETELY WRONG!!!!!! THIS WARRANTS A LOOK!!! it may or may not be pertinent in the end! it's clear the writer is a romney supporter and then to quote the romney campaign! if this were obama! i think romney lies a lot over lots of things! and ALMOST CERTAINLY HE LIED OVER THIS AND NOT REMEMBERING THIS!

Roberts you make light of bullying. You might want to check in with the mother of Phoebe Prince and reconsider after you do.

it's always darkest before the dawn.
tundish45 | May 14, 2012, 03:22 PM EDT
That is a dark world you live in BrianO. Am looking forward to seeing you out in the light on some other topic, some day. Bye for now.
BrianO | May 14, 2012, 11:35 AM EDT
Defend a negative, add some fact or name, tie it to a half truth, make the lie to fit your narative and attack. Surely you have gotten use to the statist, leftists, model by now. history repeats itself, luckily we still have the vote and can peacefully change the government
tundish45 | May 14, 2012, 10:26 AM EDT
Surely any normal human accused of such an act would know with certainty if he were falsely accused.
BrianO | May 13, 2012, 11:21 PM EDT
Tudish45@..The article states Romneys reply as not having any recollection, ie. he didn't do this act as written. The personal friend Mr White quoted in the article as being deeply affected by this incident had to be re written because mr. White had no memory of said incident but was asked his reaction to the story, look it up, to continue the hit piece started by the washington post is transparently childish on your part
tundish45 | May 13, 2012, 12:07 PM EDT
BrianO, BrianO...what a childishly weak debating technique to stray so transparently from the point under discussion. Is Mitt dishonest, or is he a serial attacker with a defective memory or is he confused? OK assume the story is made up. Why doesn't Mitt then man up and deny the incident? What is in his brain that prevents that? Why would he issue a conditional "if" statement parading as an apology for an incident that never happened?
BrianO | May 13, 2012, 09:08 AM EDT
So now since I disagree I am to be slandered, since you write it I must be as you characterize. Thank you for pointing out how the left works, Make the accusation, presume guilt, that is if the accussed isn't a leftist.
tundish45 | May 13, 2012, 09:01 AM EDT
BrianO at 11:25PM yesterday. Now you are being silly. No trick question for the Mitt because the hair cutting thing is so spectacular that any normal person would remember it if it happened. So, just did you do that or did you not? Your conditional apology leaves us to think you did that same kind of battery and hate crime so often you honestly don't remember this particular victim. And that combination of physical assault and lack of empathetic memory is characteristic of a psychopath.
Scrivner | May 13, 2012, 12:41 AM EDT
If public opinion was not trending towards gay marriage, the Washingtion Post would have spun the story thusly,"Romney involved in homosexual wrestling match with blond teenager!"
BrianO | May 12, 2012, 11:25 PM EDT
The question is if, meaning not substantiated, Tundish45 do you still beat your wife?
LordStrisus | May 12, 2012, 07:53 PM EDT
I find it interesting that a site like Irish Central that spent months talking about an Irish teenage who committed suicide due to bullying, and advocated up to castration for the kids who did it to her, is now saying that, yes, bullying is good, if it took place a long time ago. Amazing use of space for all those months talking about Phoebe Prince being a victom opf a horrid crime, but it is okay for a man who is expected to set the standards of decency for the nation to get a pass on it. Is there a statute of limitations on bad behavior? For my sake, I hope so. That said, he was the ringleader of this action. Those kids in my school who were jerky bullies remained that way, until some sort of epiphany hit them.Apparently, Romney's hs not occured. First he didn't remember the incident, and then said he didn't think the boy was really gay. My God, man, do you or do you not recall the incident? As for those castigating Obama for his high school actions, he wrote a book about how he learned from his actions. Accept it, don't accept it, but he came clean. Romney will always have the scrubbed clean memories to sustain him.
tundish45 | May 12, 2012, 07:32 PM EDT
BrianO@6:43 You don't have to assume anyhing about the WashPost article. The character aspect applies to Mitt regardless. Mit doesn't remember jumping a kid and cutting his hair? You'd remember that, right? So Mitt is either (1) lying now or (2) did so many of these kind of things that he can't be sure about this one or (3) didn't do anything remotely like this. He should man up and either flat out deny it or make an unconditional admission.
BrianO | May 12, 2012, 06:53 PM EDT
Hey EK ,something you wrote intrigued me, You said When Obama wrote his book Dreams of my father. Do you believe he is the author, or is it ghost written by Bill Ayers?
BrianO | May 12, 2012, 06:43 PM EDT
tundish45 why not ask Lauber? You assume that the washoington post is true and not a hit piece. Very convenient the timing of gay bully right after our cammander and chief says he personally supports gay marriage. Interesting the washington post piece was revised as to mr. white's statements, but don't bother to question, The ends justify the means.
tundish45 | May 12, 2012, 06:25 PM EDT
The only thing in favor of the long presidential campaign season is the public learning more about each candidate's character as they react to things flying at them. For Romney not to remember jumping a kid and cutting his hair means either he's done so many similar things he can't remember this specific one, or he does remember it and is a liar. Or he does remember it and for some reason now is afraid to 'fess up. Maybe somebody needs to tell him the statute of limitations has run out on this battery and hate crime.
Robbie69 | May 12, 2012, 01:17 PM EDT
In arguing that Romney should be forgiven for this dirty deed, apologist Patrick Roberts forgets most of the details. Romney with a few other bully friends first conspired to break into John Lauber's room. So the three broke into his room, and then wrestled Lauber to the ground and then held him there, despite Lauber's screams. Then it was Mitt Romney who took out the sizzors and cut off Lauber's bleached blonde hair. Lauber continued to scream and to cry for mercy. Sometimes you can tell a lot about a person's character by what they do when they are not as guarded as an adult or running for political office. This brazen act was so traumatic for co-conspirator Thomas Buford that he finally apologized in public for these evil deeds. For Romney to now say that he doesn't remember, and that it was just "boys will be boys" shows a lot about his character, or frankly, lack thereof. This anti-gay bullying was not an isolated incident. There were other times when he teased and tormented other boys for not being "manly enough." Add all this to Romney's contribution of some $30,000 to the Mormon church for their political campaign to stop gay marriage in California, and it is obvious we are dealing with an insensitive jerk who is lacking in honesty, integrity and character. Author Roberts got it all wrong. Someone can't be forgiven for their misdeeds unless they ask for forgiveness, and there is no indication that Romney has ever taken responsibility for anything he has done. It won't be much different if he were ever, God forbid, elected President of the USA. And the latest news is that all the George W. Bush staff are flocking to join up with Romney, now that he is the Republican candidate. This is all par for the course, as Bush never apoligized for all his lies on WMDs, the ill-conceived and expensive war in Iraq, the economic meltdown, the monstrous deficit and the worst administration in American history.
eiriamach | May 12, 2012, 09:49 AM EDT
I have plenty of evidence in my files that not every teenaged bully grows out of bullying and that some continue it right into middle age and senior citizen years. Romney has no substantive policy issues to run on (he's just anti- everything the Dems are trying to accomplish), so he's running on character and image. HE himself can shift the debate to issues of political substance. Why hasn't he done so? I criticized Obama in 2008 when he seemed to plagiarize (until Deval Patrick explained that the two had cooperated on the allegedly plagiarized points in Obama's speech). Plagiarism set a really bad example for our youth in schools and colleges. The same goes-- even more so-- for bullying. So let's not pooh-pooh it when a public figure does it, but also let's move beyond it to matters of policy.
BrianO | May 12, 2012, 08:05 AM EDT
ephraim, even better because he hides a disclaimer with the knowledge that most will be deceived, was the entry footnoted? But go with another one, how about, " the health care bill will not raise the deficit by one dime" Oh wait it raised it by more than one dime so I guess technically that wasn't a lie also
AlunPalmer | May 12, 2012, 12:40 AM EDT

@BrianO - One correction - before calling someone (Obama) a LIAR (fabrications = lies,) please get your facts straight. I read "Dreams from My Father" after a challenge from someone on this very site. Obama clearly states in his introduction that some of the people in the book are composites for the purpose of brevity. It may have hurt some feelings to be composited but he was truthful about his actions and therefore not a liar. By the way, I'm glad you are finally catching on!
BrianO | May 11, 2012, 10:03 PM EDT
"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it", santayana, the quote you used is the slightly different version of churchill-“Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”-- get the facts right before you rant on pilib-- As for character, Obama has been on both sides of the gay marriage debate, He has been caught in many fabrications, example his composite New York girlfriend in college, he stated his mother was uninsured while succoming to cancer which was untrue but convenient to push his take over of health care, I can go on if you would like, when the ends justify the means there is a lot to fear.

pilib04 | May 11, 2012, 09:36 PM EDT
It's called character. Something Mittens does not have. That's why he is able to do all these switches on a moments notice. The high school bullying really gives us an insight into where Willard is coming from. As for BrianO, what are you babbling about teamObama? You don't even know the difference between the anti-Irish pig Churchill and George Santayana (Those who fail to learn from history...). Is feidir linn.
jamthecat | May 11, 2012, 09:24 PM EDT
So you mean it's okay for Fox to rant and rave about Obama going to school in Indonesia or Trump to wonder why Obama hasn't released his grades as far back as kindergarten, but it's not okay for the media to point out that Mitt Romney has always been a bully and a sneak? Okay...typical of your sort, but also very obvious and getting to be ridiculous.
BrianO | May 11, 2012, 07:55 PM EDT
So was Mr. Lauper gay and did he want the world to know his personal life? So nice of team Obama to make that choice for him after he has passed. headline should read** Obama outs Romney Highschool classmate,** It's more truthful than the washington post lead.
MegK311 | May 11, 2012, 06:04 PM EDT
Obama and his supportors don't have anything of substance to run on so they go for this type of trash talk. What I want to know is where are the jobs and how are they going to get out of the way so that small business people can create jobs.

really bullying a class mate and then lying about it so he can lead the free world really
colbertgirl | May 11, 2012, 05:18 PM EDT
I agree that what happened in high school is pointless in most cases. Just like what Obama ate when he was a 10-year-old kid in Indonesia is pointless.
PhlutiePhan | May 11, 2012, 05:10 PM EDT
The media was pretty pathetic on this one. I am now waiting for the other shoe to fall. It is my understanding that he "pulled a girl's pigtails" when he was five years old. That should just about cancel out Obimini's rampant drug use which was similar to that of GW.

Romney - AntiGay Bast**d who can never lead America in anything other than how to fleece the people. "Romney was a leading voice against gay marriage as Massachusetts governor. The courts legalized gay marriage in the state during his tenure, (Even when this became law, Romney attempted to go against the wishes of the courts and citizens of Ma.)but he supported a constitutional amendment to define marriage as the union of a man and a woman. After gay marriage became legal, Romney sought to enforce a statute banning state officials from marrying gay couples from other states. In a speech to conservatives last winter, Romney touted that move, saying he prevented Massachusetts from becoming the "Las Vegas of gay marriage." Romney said Wednesday he supports limiting benefits for same-sex couples. "I do not favor civil unions if they are identical to marriage other than by name," he told the Fox TV station in Denver. "My view is the domestic partnership benefits, hospital visitation rights, and the like are appropriate but that the others are not." The Romney campaign did not respond to requests for clarification about which benefits Romney supports and which he does not. Romney also faced an internal issue this month when his openly gay national security spokesman, Richard Grenell, resigned after his support for gay marriage drew intense criticism from conservatives. Grenell, who served as spokesman for then-U.N. Ambassador John Bolton during the Bush administration, said in a statement that Obama is on the "the right side of history," though he suggested the president is playing politics with civil rights." I dread to think of what 'President' Romney will do bring the USA back to the 19/20th century.

jflanagan | May 11, 2012, 03:00 PM EDT
The sisters and brother of the late alleged victim, who is not here to confirm or deny the story, said on ABC News they were upset their brother was being used for political reasons. Phillip Maxwell gave two previous interviews and never mentioned anything bad about Governor Romney. Now that Romney is the probable Republican Candidate he comes forward with this story? A man drowned a woman in Chappaquidick (sp) and went on to be a long time Senator. Another man was a recruiter for the KKK and became a Senator for a long long time. A political advisor for LBJ tried to get files from the FBI to out a gay Goldwater campaign worker and has a very popular PBS show. These are facts the men did not dispute and yet hearsay testimony is going to bring down Governor Romney? I'm a Democrat and not a Romney supporter but I do find this despicably one sided politics. We suffered enough shame from Kennedy, Byrd and Moyers, let's not compound the shame.
BrianO | May 11, 2012, 02:56 PM EDT
EK. Thank you for your posts. Your blind devotion to your cause is getting cleare everyday.
EphraimKibbey | May 11, 2012, 02:44 PM EDT
Mr. Roberts - As a retired High School teacher I can tell you that your attitude is what has created the culture of bullying in our schools. If parents would be stricter in teaching their children the golden rule and the evils of assaulting (physically, verbally and electronically) other children, there would be many fewer teen suicides. The lives lost are squarely on YOUR conscience since you condone bullying. Shame on you for setting such a bad example to our youth!
EphraimKibbey | May 11, 2012, 02:35 PM EDT
@maggiepoo - That is EXACTLY the point. This is the difference between the two people who wish to lead us. We must either chose the one who made a mistake as a child and felt so badly about it that, as an adult, it still weighed down his conscience and so he wrote about it in "Dreams from my Father" and used it as a teaching moment. This one recognised, on his own, that bullying was hurtful and wrong and wrote condemning it. Or we can chose the other one who laughed continuously while being asked about an incident where he lead a gang against a younger child and assaulted the child for being different. That one said he couldn't even remember the incident so obviously it hasn't been bothering his conscience much. From reporting of Romney's actions as an adult, we can see that he has not learned much about how to treat others since growing up. Note that we would probably never have even learned about this had not Ann Romney been so insistent about how wild and crazy he was in high school. Now every little thing from his past is fair game.
EphraimKibbey | May 11, 2012, 02:23 PM EDT
Why do you believe this story? The sister of the alleged victim says she never knew about her brother being terrorified, the victim is conveniently dead so he cannot verify, and sources in the story deny they were there or it happened. Rombney must be lieing because he can't remember the incident. You would be wise to see if Obama and his team has made falsehoods in the past before believing this story.
walleyeman | May 11, 2012, 02:09 PM EDT
I hear in one of obamas books he admitted to bullying a little black girl. Romney, the PRESUMPTIVE nominee is already getting skewered for purported high school pranks yet we are 3 plus years into obamas term and we still know little of his educational years. Elementary, high school college grad school. All a mystery with Obama having spent millions keeping the records sealed. Wonder why. Maybe he ate more than a dog?
rainbowbrew | May 11, 2012, 01:32 PM EDT
Actually this expalins a lot. he was a bully in High School and never change his ways. remembe the mittens quote "I like to fire people" as he and his company would take over companies and drawn them and then close shop for money. he was a bully then and still is a bully not the type of person that should be in an important political office.
Nicomax | May 11, 2012, 01:29 PM EDT
You go to a top-notch prep school to prepare yourself for a life-long role. In Mitt's case it was negatively impacting those below him who are different, financially weak, with limited job skills, etc. Bain Capital was the perfect place for him to employ all he learned and practiced at Cranbrook. Now he want's to employ such skills on a much larger stage. Look out below!
hollabackgurl | May 11, 2012, 01:04 PM EDT
Mitt Romney’s actions need to be taken in context. This MIGHT be different if he had grown up to become a politician who advocates for equality and fairness for LGBT individuals, but this is not the case.

And to be honest, I wouldn't have known Romney was a bully before Patrick Roberts wrote aboute it.
I feel so much wiser now.

I don't have a problem forgiving anyone for a HS prank, even if I will not vote for him, but to say he doesn't remember it raises a question in my mind about his truthfulness. His general confession of "dumb things" just doesn't seem to cover it. I'm a lot older than Mitt and it's something I doubt I would "forget".
TheOldPerfessor | May 11, 2012, 12:05 PM EDT
Murph46 - my apologies for not taking into account the human possibility of turning your life around. However, if you listen to Romney's giggly "Bows will be boys" account of his time in high school, I'm not seeing a lot of soul searching.

Hey Packey...tis only a puff of wind from a gentleman's heart, no matter what ye ignorant people may call it. Opoets99 | May 11, 2012, 11:36 AM EDT
The liberal media have been silent about Obamas cocaine and pot use in high school. We don't know a thing about his college years, his transcripts are locked up. Apparently, he had no friends other than anarchists, no girlfriends, no one that ever remembered him attending Columbia. Apparently, the media's disposition on Obama is Don't Ask, Don't Tell.
Monsoonman | May 11, 2012, 11:33 AM EDT
I like the tagline on the article "passing gas?" :) Reading the comments below from the usual lefty looney tune suspects, leads me to agree with DR. Michael Savage when he diagnosed liberalism is a mental disorder. Mitt Romney is a decent man and it says a lot that you have to go back 50 yrs to find an alleged "incident" to criticize.

Was Robert Byrd held responsible for his heinous actions, not as a high school kid but as an adult. Everyone grows and evolves. This is a non story anyway. Anyone who is for Obama is still for Obama and everyone who is for Romney is still for Romney.

I hope the liberal media will delve into Obama' s background with the same gusto and timing. They have not so far and there are a lot more troubling issues with his background than what has been said about Romney. It a shame that Obama and the liberal media have diverted the discourse on this election from the more important issues of jobs and the economy instead of social issues that smack of the decadence that brought down the Roman Empire.

Roberts, once again, has completely missed the point (along with some of your readers). Yes, looking at one's actions against others is exactly the same as how someone treats one's own body. Yeah, pick a h.s. kid and they were either a bully or were bullied, but the ones that were bullied DIDN'T BEAT UP OTHERS! DIDN'T TRAUMATIZE OTHERS!!! DID NOT SHOW THEIR INSECURITIES BY BELITTLING OTHERS!! And considering how Romney went on to buy companies just to fire employees, it seems it kinda carries on today, corporate bully (and yes, I realize that is kind over simplifying, but aren't we all doing that in these comments?). Bullying is an act of violence, not a careless or carefree abuse of one's own body by drinking or doing drugs. Pick any guy and they either were a rapist or they weren't. Rape is an act of violence, do you pass that up just as easily as bullying? I'm guessing you do since most conservatives feel a woman who is raped should keep the child no matter how traumatic it might be. You people are idiots. I weep for humanity.

Perfessor- I totally disagree,I was like that in High School largely in part because then I was a follower of a guy that ended up going to prison for his deeds,I have made amends and changed my life. You are either in one political camp or another ,but high school activities don't mean a damn

What Romney did in high school was terrorism, pure and simple. You are either born with the ability to do that or you aren't. He could have at least come clean and admitted it, but that Republican amnesia set it at the usual convenient times.

what goes around comes around...Fox, Drudge, Malkin, Coulter et al have dissected every aspect of Obama's life from the time he was in grade school in the hope of destroying him...and now you folks whine and pout when the microscope is on your boy. All we've done is taken Karl Rove's playbook and are running with it. Better put on your big boy pants because you folks made the rules, and everything is now fair game.

Have you read what Obama has said and written about his own high school years - heavy drinking, drugs, not studying, etc.? He regrets many of his actions. Two of my older brothers did a a couple of things in h.s. that they regard as stupid and "NOT one of their finest moments." Today, one is a board-certified surgeon who donates a lot of his time and money through his foundation for children & adults who can't afford medical procedures. The other one is a medical scientist researching genetic diseases. A lot of people can look back on their h.s. yrs. and remember things they did as teens that were mean, thoughtless, and immature. I think people should be judged by their adult actions, beliefs & policies, not their teenage h.s. yrs. - 50 yrs. ago.
