Kate Middleton painting looks like she’s posing for a mug shot - Or maybe it is a Lindsay Lohan night out look alike

| Paul Emsley's painting of Kate Middleton |
I’m sorry, but that new portrait of the Duchess of Cambridge makes her look like she is posing for a mugshot or Lindsay Lohan after a late night out.
I don’t think much of royalty, but I do agree that Kate is a beautiful woman and if you think this portrait captures that beauty then I suggest you get rather large rose-tinted spectacles.
The white faced, puffy eyed incarnation of the future queen makes her look much older, and she is vaguely cross eyed, like she’d had too much gin to imbibe -- a la Lindsay Lohan.
Then there’s the half smile that looks like a Chucky evil grin, not convincing at all.
She looms out of a black background rather like a Halloween monster emerging from the deep.
How she could have liked this portrait is a mystery to me and I’m sure millions of other people when they see it.
The artist said she was too beautiful to be painted, and he’s right about that. He certainly has not caught that beauty or that timeless English Rose quality.
I’ll prefer to call it “Lindsay After a Night Out” actually.

Kate Middleton is a beautiful Woman . The Painting is just one Man's interpretation of Her beauty - it's not meant to be a photograph ! Maybe it does not do justice to Her beauty but I still like it.She is the epitomy of an English Rose ! Being Irish does not preclude any of us ( who want to)from commenting favourably on aspects of thier lives. She never did anything to harm Ireland.

All this fawning over these unelected Germans - grow up!

gobdawpaddy: Wonder no more and remember she will eventually become Queen of (N)Ireland ( possibly ALL Ireland by then!)and is currently the Duchess of Carrickfergus! (Where the first King William landed, remember!) ~~~~ Patrick: Lay off the poor woman .... you are no oil painting yourself!
sharlot | Jan 12, 2013, 06:59 PM EST
I think it is just fine; please leave the girl alone!!

I think she might have been being diplomatic in saying she liked the portrait. She's a beautiful woman, and this doesn't do her justice in that regard. As to the artist using a photograph he was given...that doesn't mean he did a good job at painting from it. For all we know, that photograph might have been quite nice, and he just mucked up the work. Maybe in furute, they'll have another portrait painteed that looks more like the Duchess...

Looks like a modernised copy of the Mona Lisa sadly the artist failed as the man said leonardo it ain't

This painting is prophetic, WaityKatie will not age well, but C'et la vie. Patrick Roberts on the other hand after bemoaning all the attention that international attention will be drawn away from 'important' subjests by the royal pregnancy is delighted to give us this piece of insightful journalism. You go Paddy!

She looks 20 lbs heavier and 15 years older. Dreadful portrait !

She's no beauty in real life, merely pretty. I wouldn't kick her out of bed, if you get my meaning. But that pic is dreadful, words escape me. She looks like she's a bit part in the Adamns family with that twisted mouth. Give me her sister Pippa every time.

Francesmargaretmary, I hate to break this to you but Kate has said that she likes the likeness of her captured in this painting and afterall it was done from a photo that he was obviously given, so don't blame the artist. I think that it isn't the best painting that I have seen but it certainly isn't the worst and I for one couldn't have done better, could you? Just asking?

Sadly because she is in the public eye we all, Americans included, see her as someone who we see as an icon, even though we have no real royalty here.
gobdawpaddy | Jan 12, 2013, 01:40 PM EST
I am at a loss to understand how this 'story' might be connected with Irish America.

We are not amused, but we are anxious to see what comes out of Kate's "middle." "Ton" in for film and story and do not get excited about those photos of her mammary glands taken in France. They are now expanding to provide sustenance for the future Queen, King who will at that stage be permitted to marry a mate of the same gender if the UK continues along its present decadent path. Add to that, she/he may marry a Roman Catholic which seems to have uoset the future Head of the Church of England, her/his grandpoppy Charles. The Chinese curse is "may you live in interesting times." "Come on Baby, light my fire" and add charm to that stuffy old dynasty. The Jubilee and 2012 Games will be forgotten soon, and your grandpoppy will be the Royal Bore.

Kool Kate is becoming more Kardashian-like every day. Fairly soon we will learn that her sister married a hulking footballer and then divorced his 3 months later.

This is how she looks at 6am every morning, without the wig! What wig; Did you not know she wears a wig?
alisaann | Jan 12, 2013, 12:36 PM EST
i DON'T care for it....i feel it could have been MUCH BETTER....it makes her look OLDDER, then what she is.....she is MUCH prettier, then she is shown here. alisa PS: i would NOT have released this, if it we're me.

Why is an Irish Central interested in such twaddle.
francesmargaretmary | Jan 12, 2013, 12:15 PM EST
if the artist said kate was too beautiful to paint.........why was he permitted to do it ?? time to hang up the paintbrushes !!!
francesmargaretmary | Jan 12, 2013, 12:10 PM EST
perhaps the artist is loosing perhaps the artist(??)is loosing their eyesight............that is bar none, the worst likeness i have ever seen of "kate"!!! she and will can not be happy with this painting......if it has to be displayed, behind a closet door would the place!!!
JudyStinger | Jan 12, 2013, 12:05 PM EST
One wonders if the painter has something against the Royal Family. This is an awful picture of a very lovely woman. Neeldess to say, the Royal Family needs to get a new painter and quickly.
JudyStinger | Jan 12, 2013, 11:44 AM EST
Terrible portrait! Why in God's name wasn't she permitted to smile? It looks like a mug-shot.
WoundedKnee | Jan 12, 2013, 11:24 AM EST
Roberts--they rejected this piece at People magazine? So that's why you're posting it here? Run it by me again--how is this of interest to an Irish-American site?
sidhemajik | Jan 12, 2013, 10:51 AM EST
I've no problem with this portrait. Art is in the eye of the beholder.
CitizenWhy | Jan 12, 2013, 10:40 AM EST
Although the UK royals (but not Kate) are descended from Brian Boru, that's a stretch for including her on this site.
harp579 | Jan 12, 2013, 10:27 AM EST
Roger Rafferty, agreed. An Irish site, for both the Irish Irish and those with only an Irish heritage, to pay attention to the English royal family (unless the story directly relates to Irish interests) is counterproductive as it legitimizes them as somehow a part of our society whether in Ireland or America. This then tends to de-legitimize the Irish and Irish descent as we are used subconsciously as the 'anti-English' in so many peoples minds, and at least in america, being anti-english is tantamount to being unpatriotic, as the founding fathers here were mostly off English ancestry. . . . [Similarly "THE" queen is not our queen. "THE" queen is the *English* or British queen, not really THE queen, as this kind of implies that she is also our queen. Words matter.] And then you use a celebrity with an Irish name to put the "royal" person in a better light. Very odd.
Roger Rafferty | Jan 12, 2013, 09:40 AM EST
Why are we reading such nonsense about the English royal family in IRISH Central? I don't read the normally interesting website for this!!
Rebelforce | Jan 12, 2013, 09:35 AM EST
Where's her halo for heaven's sake? This is the "New Diana" afterall. What an outrage!
jefferysmcgraw | Jan 12, 2013, 08:58 AM EST
Granted, it's not the most flattering depiction, but it's not awful either. This reminds me of taking photos on an iPhone. Sometimes they turn out beautiful, but most times the lighting just isn't right and I look more haggard than in actuality. Something tells me the artist wasn't using the best lighting when rendering up this portrait.
Nicopernicus | Jan 12, 2013, 08:42 AM EST
I think she's rather fetching...Beauty is in the eye....of the manic.
LoveDoolin | Jan 12, 2013, 08:38 AM EST
I totally agree. This portrait doesn't even come close to exemplifying the beauty of England's future queen. I would be embarrassed to present this to her, given she was an art history major at St. Andrews.
