It may have started out as a game and a joke but the Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert rally in Washington D.C. may be the most important political event this year.

The political stage has been completely dominated this election season by Glenn Beck and other right wing commentators and the various Tea party rallies.

Can Stewart and Colbert prove there is a a major alternative American voice out there as the mid term elections approach and the Tea Party is running rampant?

The October 30th "Rally to Restore Sanity" ,coming just a short time before those elections could prove to be a rallying cry and a Woodstock for the millions of liberals and moderates whose voices, with the exception of Stewart and Colbert, have not been heard.

Stewart in particular has shown an ability to articulate the sheer puzzlement and occasional despair at the charges being flung from the right against the Obama administration and others.

He skewers the worst excesses nightly as does Colbert in a more complex fashion.

But who do they speak for, and will the people they speak for turn up on the mall and give voice to the reality that while both are comedians, what they are addressing is deadly serious?

Time will tell but it will be a fascinating exercise in power politics, behind all the grins and one liners.

So the truth comes out. This is a ONE NATION rally!!!
colbert and stewart must need a ratings boost. they'll be lucky to et 50k loonies. mostly welfare and college ignorants, that believe colbert and stewart deliver REAL news.
*%#smith&@%...I was talking about the clown pretending to be Potus. Thank you very much.
I wish I could make it that rally. Maloney, your statement proves your ignorance... I know plenty of Muslims that ARE NOT terrorists and I know of quite a few Christians that ARE. Terrorism is not limited to one faith nor does faith make one a terrorist.
@Jakeleg: I believe that both Stewart and Colbert are "true Americans" having both been born here, having citizenship and, among other things, the rights of free speech and free assembly. You obviously don't agree with their points of view and they probably don't agree with yours. But, do you think that they would characterize you as being "un-American" because of your more conservative beliefs?
What I love about Jon Stewart is how he points out the hypocrisy of the news media, especially Fox News. Nothing like using Fox News tapes against themselves. He roasts both sides of the aisle, unlike Fox News. judiron - it's "they're" not "their", jakeleg it's "two" not "too". Perhaps if you two paid attention in school you wouldn't sound so ignorant now.
JM...pathetic extremism, ignorance and divisiveness. Sorry but willingness to work together for the common good of the socialists & muslim terrorists & marxists, ect, of the world is not my idea of what America is all about. Nor was it what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they started & fought for this great nation. The govt. owning private businesses and bailing out private bus. was not in the game plan. Brainwashing the youth of America was not in the plan. Taking from the working taxpayers & giving to the to damn sorry to work free obama money crowd was not in the plan either. Spending the U.S. into a 3rd world country I don't think that was on the list. We can't afford to pay the interest let alone the debt. Give me a brake!!!
Why do we listen to comedians. Wake up America...This is not a joke we're going through here. Why we listen to arrogant people like these too is not like true Americans.
With all due respect, Mr/Ms Maloney, the fact remains: the ignorance and divisiveness of the Tea Party movement and its adherents is nothing short of pathetic extremism. As such, it will founder like all extremist groups before it. What is needed at this point in the United States is sanity and a willingness to work together for the common good. Is that too much to ask of those who espouse an "I'm Alright Jack" attitude to life?
JamesMurphy...note of sanity..!!! From 2 liberal comics? Don't fall into the belief of the dems. fake hysteria of name calling & finger pointing. They would be talking issues if they had done anything right in the last 4 years. But they haven't & they can't.
Hey!!!! there isn't an honest politician in this world. Everyone of them is in politics to screw the public and make themselves rich. When did you ever see a "poor" politician. Wake up America.!!!!!!
More power to olbert and Stewart. Someone has to inject a note of sanity into the alarming extremism of the ignorant Tea Party movement and its manically misguided followers.
Just a couple of smart-ass, arrogant idiots who are getting PAID a bundle of money to espouse their NOT funny BS. Who cares....there has to be MORE money in this deal for them; they are hardly doing it altuistic reasons. Please, give me a break! The American grassroots will speak as we have since the Tea Party movement train has taken off and is flying down the tracks to November elections.
DC has a built in demonstration mob available 7 days a week, 365 days a year, they live in the neighborhood. all they have to do is roll out of bed and walk a few blocks. If a liberal call for assembly does not get at least several thousand out on the mall, then there is something very wrong....I was impressed with the rally Beck had, several hundred thousand people from all over the US. That was a true cross section of America and demonstrated how much the citizens cared by taking time out from their jobs and the expense of traveling to DC. The ruling class know this and realize the geese are pissed.
One last hurra For left wing loons B4 getting smashed in Nov. Progressives enjoy making fun of Tea Party with lies. Now wait & see the bungholes of welfare trash DC.
