Protestors numbering in the hundreds tried to gain access to the Irish parliament building on Tuesday night but most were repulsed by police who, by one account, had to draw their batons.

The demonstration against government economic policies turned violent when members of the crowd charged the gates of the building.

Some succeeded in getting inside and police reinforcements were forced to lock down the entire building.

Members of the Irish Dail were unable to leave their rooms and were forced to remain inside the building until the all clear.

It amazes me that there aren't more protests in Ireland against the country's crazy immigration laws. There's about 15% unemployment, yet every month thousands of legal immigrants (and lots of illegals) are coming into the country, many to go straight on welfare. Crazy country!
Well if the Irish government would stop spending all their money on entitlement programs, maybe there country wouldn't be falling apart economically. I think Cowen and Obama went to the same school.
Who were the protesters? An organized group of some sort?
