Immigration advocates are about to admit defeat on comprehensive reform and are looking at a much more incremental approach to immigration reform.
That comes after a soul searching analysis by many of the key figures and financial backers who now see that, given the country's mood, the prospect for comprehensive reform is pretty much non-existent.
The new plan that will likely emerge will take issues such as the Dream Act, which would legalize immigrants who were brought here as small children and seek to legalize them.
Immigrant rights campaigners desperately need a victory. The overall plan is not possible at this stage and they are right to focus on what is possible.
The current thinking is that a lame duck congress could pass the Dream Act which is supported by many moderate Republican senators.
Advocates for the Dream Act have stayed on board with the comprehensive effort to this point but are increasingly of the opinion that it is time to seek to pass their bill first.
It is hard to disagree with them. The worst cases of immigration law usually involve children and minors who have spent most of their lives in America and know no other home .
Through no fault of their own they were brought to this country at a young age and now are caught in a permanent limbo.
It makes perfect sense to try and pass that legislation first.
It is good to see that a long overdue sense of reality has finally seemed to enter the mindset of immigration campaigners.

I have lived in Brownsville Tx. & Scottsdale Az. Now NC. They don't do jobs Americans won't do, They do any job the crooked business man gives them for half of the minimum wage, working under the table, not paying taxes. They are enslaved by this situation. While the crooked polititions & employers get rich. At the same time the same illegals collect welfare, foodstamps & every other govt. handout available. You can't help them, they won't help themselves. Give them rubbers for birth control & the children use them as baloons. Give them seeds to plant & they eat the seeds. You stupid liberals are really the illegals worst enemies because all you do is throw them a bone so you can pat yourselves on the back & tell the world what wonderful people you are. You talk about something you know nothing about showing your stupidity every time you open your mouthes.

I agree with you, Maloney. the US can't support the world. Immigrants who come into the country should come in legally and follow the legal process. The thousands that come in illegally every year are eating the US from the inside. Our southern border IS starting to look like the poor, crime-ridden place they left.
maireadinmelb | Sep 03, 2010, 05:26 AM EDT
BTW if we did not go following the US into stupid wars that are supposed to bring democracy (a democracy that cannot be guaranteed to your own people -see the patriot act) we would not have enemies!! Every western democracy has a responsibility to help those in the rest of the world who supply the OIL and GOLD our wealth is built on! So either help make their countries better ie irradicate diseases globally not just in western countries and you wont have to worry about the illness an immigrant will bring!!
maireadinmelb | Sep 03, 2010, 05:23 AM EDT
Say that to those immigrants who work hard every day in teh jobs that americans dont want or want do!! Let them come earn a living and build a life and you will see they are people just like you who want nothing more than to build a life and a home!!
maloney | Sep 02, 2010, 08:07 PM EDT
maireadinmelb...poor clueless dolt. They pour across the US border like cockroaches or rats, bringing sickness & disease, bedbugs & crime. They want to make America into the same hellhole they left behind. They don't want to learn the language or follow the laws. The biggest problem as I see it is they keep good people from other countries from coming here because of quotas, including the Irish so don't talk about what you don't know. The US has laws & they should be obeyed. This is not welfare for the world. If the US goes down who will bail out your arses when it hits the fan?
Monsoonman | Aug 31, 2010, 11:11 PM EDT
What in the heck are they putting in the water in Melbourne....LAD!!!!!
maireadinmelb | Aug 31, 2010, 06:16 AM EDT
Oh poor hard done by white middle class americans - off you go and have another tea party!! Could not dare celebrate the fact that your nation is built on the back of immigration!! (careful throwing around that free health cover I am sure you will take it back when you can)
IrishAndProud | Aug 31, 2010, 12:00 AM EDT
One post I saw put it well (though I don't know where it originated). It says, thusly [BEGIN QUOTE]: If you cross the Chinese border illegally you may never be heard from again. If you cross the Venezuelan border illegally you will be branded a spy and your fate will be sealed. If you cross the Mexican borders illegally you will jailed for two years. If you cross the Cuban border illegally you will be thrown into political prison to rot. If you cross the United States border illegally you get: 1 - A job, 2 - A driver's license, 3 - A Social Security card, 4 - Welfare, 5 - Food stamps, 6 - Credit cards, 7 - Subsidized rent or a loan to buy a house, 8 - Free education, 9 - Free health care, 10 - A lobbyist in Washington, 11 - Billions of dollars in public documents printed in your language, 12 - Millions of servicemen and women who are willing to -and do - die for your right to the ways and means of our constitution, 13 - And the right to carry the flag of your country - the one you walked out on - while you call America racist and protest that you don't get enough respect.

May I recommend an evelyn woods reading course for ya? It is the USA laws, not the WORLDS. Get over it.
maireadinmelb | Aug 29, 2010, 06:28 AM EDT
THen prove it my putting those documents into practice! If you want to be treated in accordance to those rights you need to treat others, ALL OTHERS the same way! Otherwise those documents are worthless as is your idea of being a beacon for others to follow!!
Monsoonman | Aug 28, 2010, 07:19 PM EDT
It is the US Constitution and the US Bill of Rights. Yes America wants to see other countries adopt its model so they can have some semblance of freedom too, but our country is a sovereign country and its laws are sovereign. Sorry but it is not the worlds country, we are just the shining beacon on the hill for others to aspire too.
maireadinmelb | Aug 28, 2010, 06:41 PM EDT
If you are aware of any of Thomas Jefferson's writings and study he wrote not just for americans. THat is why he and Adams fell out. Further it is all based on the French document "The rights of man" Further supposedly the americans were so eager for the UN to promote this ideology the world over!! Either you believe the words "that all men are created equal" or you dont - there is no exemptions, just hypocrisy! And dont forget with rights comes responsibility ie protecting the rights of all not just yourself!!
Monsoonman | Aug 28, 2010, 11:36 AM EDT
The US constitution and bill of rights were written for United States Citizens. Otherwise they would be called the World Constitution and the World Bill of Rights. This is the same type of attitude that doesn't think the US should protect its borders or citizens....Can't wait for the pendulum swing that is going to happen in November, the locusts will go back under their rocks for 17 years.
maireadinmelb | Aug 28, 2010, 04:40 AM EDT
longislander1940 - "you have no rights unless you are an american citizen" Are you insane?? For aren't all people created equal?? Are not all people born from a woman's body?? What makes you better than any other human on this planet!!! READ the Declaration of Human Rights!! or even your own constitution!! That comment is terrible!

I don't see how getting a first rate USA primary education and health care is PUNISHMENT, it gives them a big leg up on their law abiding neighbors back home when they return, I know many who have returned and since the know English and have contacts in the USA they are doing great, better than their neighbors who didn't break US laws.
KansasUSA | Aug 25, 2010, 11:23 AM EDT
It's too bad that they children have to suffer the consequences of their parents actions but that's too bad. Are these politicians starting to worry about possibly NOT being re-elected so they are in a hurry to pass this? It's time they started remembering who it is they work for. The AMERICAN citizen. Not the lobbyists or private interest groups and certainly not the illegal immigrant.
Taylor55 | Aug 24, 2010, 09:28 PM EDT
I say deport the Dream students first, if they are as gifted as they claim they can work to make their home countries better so less of their fellow citizens will want to come here. This is the immorality of illegal immigration that Father Bascio was talking about.
longislander1940 | Aug 23, 2010, 11:09 PM EDT
IMMIGRANT RIGHTS? you have no rights unless you are an American citizen. Dont blame us for the children born here, blame there parents for coming here illegally. Lets give green cards to people who will work for a living and not the freeloaders who have been coming.
Monsoonman | Aug 23, 2010, 08:43 PM EDT
Interesting to know if the US taxpayers paid for obamas education because he said he was a foreign student. I would sure like to see his sealed school records in order to get a definitive answer.
Taylor55 | Aug 23, 2010, 08:20 PM EDT
I personally know many foreign students who want to attend college in the USA, and have been accepted at US colleges, and paid thousands for application fees, but the US government will not give them a student visa because there are already too many foreign students in the USA, many who entered illegally, the Dreamers!! All these illegal Dreamers are keeping deserving legal foreign students out of the USA!! What the heck kind of backwards system is that, not enforcing the laws then penalize the people who obey the laws? This is exactly why the US immigration system is broken, the US is basically telling foreigners to break the laws, that is how you get in!! Even worse, the US allows Mexicans to break in much more easily than any other nationality, giving Mexicans a 100 to 1 immigration advantage over everyone else in the world.
Taylor55 | Aug 23, 2010, 07:24 PM EDT
Once again illegal aliens first, legal immigrants last. This is just like all the other amnesties which increased legal immigrant waiting times, this amnesty will once again increase legal immigrant waiting times even more. Since the requirements are very low, just a GED and fake documents purporting to show two years at a trade school, the millions who qualify will displace millions of legal immigrants. Plus since it will benefit 100 Mexicans for every Irish who benefits, Mexicans will do the displacing, Irish will be the ones displaced. So much for equal opportunity and non-racism.
MamieVanloren | Aug 23, 2010, 01:33 PM EDT
maryjeandc The Dream Act will give America a needed generation of smart leaders. Remember, these folks have to qualify for College or the military to benefit by this law. Its a relatively small but important measure. --------------------------------- BALONEY! American children need this money for their own educational future. Our tax-monies are meant for American citizens. We need American leaders not Mecha/La Raza leaders like Sen. Gil Cedillo!
Iknowyouwell | Aug 23, 2010, 01:19 PM EDT
WE have said many times: No amnesty. No Dream Act. The parents of these illegal student brought them here illegally. That is a problem created by the same parents. That is a problem that we Americans have not created. Therefore, they have to be deported. And this November remove from office all the Democrats and some Republican who support amnesty for illegal aliens and the Dream Act. The politicians cannot do anything without the approval of Americans. Americans run this country. The politicians do not. Americans say: NO AMNESTY. NO DREAMT ACT. GOT IT DEMOCRATS?
DLW12183 | Aug 23, 2010, 10:46 AM EDT
This will be passed to do nothing more than to buy democratic votes for the 2012 election. Sorry imuverin but the Irish are not Mexican and the numbers just aren't there for the administration to worry about, let alone you said to immigrate legally. Between the November elections and January 1 the junk the lame duck democrats and administration pass into law will ultimately be the last nail in the coffin for the United States.
imuverin | Aug 22, 2010, 06:28 PM EDT
What is in this bill for Irish in Ireland that want to legally immigrate to America as our forefathers did
JimThompson | Aug 22, 2010, 03:27 PM EDT
Illegal is still illegal. No benefits for illegel entry6 regardless of the reason.
peterson | Aug 22, 2010, 02:27 PM EDT
When over 70 % of Americans are against this mockery of justice, voting these idiots out in November is a must !

I agree. Any child over the age of 13 should be given citizen ship but should be made to pass the test by the time their 19 or should be sent back to their country. New babies should not be or under 13.
mmccreedy | Aug 22, 2010, 10:23 AM EDT
The only loons in Congress that will vote for this tragedy will be those that stand no chance of being re-elected, including so-called moderate Republicans. Anyone that wants to come to this country and DO IT THE RIGHT WAY is welcome by me, and 99% of the rest of America, but if you illegally come here, your criminal butt should be deported back to where you came from.
mhichil | Aug 21, 2010, 06:22 PM EDT
Ronald Reagan gave mexicans amnesty and now 20 years later Americans have a new anchor baby generation to register. It would be cheaper by far to occupy Mexico and do some Nation Building there like America does in the Iraq. Just think of the employment opportunities without environmental regulations! USA will supply the drug cartels to do the dirty political work and the military take over is easy. Make lemonade out of those lemons, fellas and quit complaining. They don't want your job 'cos you don't have one!
victor85 | Aug 21, 2010, 04:18 PM EDT
Dear Monsoonman, Just to get the fact straight. The Dream Act is supported more than 70% of Americans. http://www.firstfocus.net/library/polling-and-opinion-research/public-support-for-the-dream-act
Monsoonman | Aug 21, 2010, 12:30 PM EDT
Are you excited by the prospect that an unpopular law may be enacted(opposed by over 70% of the electorate) because many members of congress who were fired by their constituents for supporting such bills, will now have nothing to lose and can vote to stick another fork in the citizens of the United States?...Isn't that an exciting thought robert?
