Immigration reformers will seek to pass Dream Act in lame duck session of congress

Immigration advocates are about to admit defeat on comprehensive reform and are looking at a much more incremental approach to immigration reform.

That comes after a soul searching analysis by many of the key figures and financial backers who now see that, given the country's mood, the prospect for comprehensive reform is pretty much non-existent.

The new plan that will likely emerge will take issues such as the Dream Act, which would legalize immigrants who were brought here as small children and seek to legalize them.

Immigrant rights campaigners desperately need a victory. The overall plan is not possible at this stage and they are right to focus on what is possible.

The current thinking is that a lame duck congress could pass the Dream Act which is supported by many moderate Republican senators.

Advocates for the Dream Act have stayed on board with the comprehensive effort to this point but are increasingly of the opinion that it is time to seek to pass their bill first.

It is hard to disagree with them. The worst cases of immigration law usually involve children and minors who have spent most of their lives in America and know no other home .

Through no fault of their own they were brought to this country at a young age and now are caught in a permanent limbo.

It makes perfect sense to try and pass that legislation first.

It is good to see that a long overdue sense of reality has finally seemed to enter the mindset of immigration campaigners.

I don't see how getting a first rate USA primary education and health care is PUNISHMENT, it gives them a big leg up on their law abiding neighbors back home when they return, I know many who have returned and since the know English and have contacts in the USA they are doing great, better than their neighbors who didn't break US laws.
It's too bad that they children have to suffer the consequences of their parents actions but that's too bad. Are these politicians starting to worry about possibly NOT being re-elected so they are in a hurry to pass this? It's time they started remembering who it is they work for. The AMERICAN citizen. Not the lobbyists or private interest groups and certainly not the illegal immigrant.
I say deport the Dream students first, if they are as gifted as they claim they can work to make their home countries better so less of their fellow citizens will want to come here. This is the immorality of illegal immigration that Father Bascio was talking about.
IMMIGRANT RIGHTS? you have no rights unless you are an American citizen. Dont blame us for the children born here, blame there parents for coming here illegally. Lets give green cards to people who will work for a living and not the freeloaders who have been coming.
Interesting to know if the US taxpayers paid for obamas education because he said he was a foreign student. I would sure like to see his sealed school records in order to get a definitive answer.
I personally know many foreign students who want to attend college in the USA, and have been accepted at US colleges, and paid thousands for application fees, but the US government will not give them a student visa because there are already too many foreign students in the USA, many who entered illegally, the Dreamers!! All these illegal Dreamers are keeping deserving legal foreign students out of the USA!! What the heck kind of backwards system is that, not enforcing the laws then penalize the people who obey the laws? This is exactly why the US immigration system is broken, the US is basically telling foreigners to break the laws, that is how you get in!! Even worse, the US allows Mexicans to break in much more easily than any other nationality, giving Mexicans a 100 to 1 immigration advantage over everyone else in the world.
Once again illegal aliens first, legal immigrants last. This is just like all the other amnesties which increased legal immigrant waiting times, this amnesty will once again increase legal immigrant waiting times even more. Since the requirements are very low, just a GED and fake documents purporting to show two years at a trade school, the millions who qualify will displace millions of legal immigrants. Plus since it will benefit 100 Mexicans for every Irish who benefits, Mexicans will do the displacing, Irish will be the ones displaced. So much for equal opportunity and non-racism.
maryjeandc The Dream Act will give America a needed generation of smart leaders. Remember, these folks have to qualify for College or the military to benefit by this law. Its a relatively small but important measure. --------------------------------- BALONEY! American children need this money for their own educational future. Our tax-monies are meant for American citizens. We need American leaders not Mecha/La Raza leaders like Sen. Gil Cedillo!
WE have said many times: No amnesty. No Dream Act. The parents of these illegal student brought them here illegally. That is a problem created by the same parents. That is a problem that we Americans have not created. Therefore, they have to be deported. And this November remove from office all the Democrats and some Republican who support amnesty for illegal aliens and the Dream Act. The politicians cannot do anything without the approval of Americans. Americans run this country. The politicians do not. Americans say: NO AMNESTY. NO DREAMT ACT. GOT IT DEMOCRATS?
This will be passed to do nothing more than to buy democratic votes for the 2012 election. Sorry imuverin but the Irish are not Mexican and the numbers just aren't there for the administration to worry about, let alone you said to immigrate legally. Between the November elections and January 1 the junk the lame duck democrats and administration pass into law will ultimately be the last nail in the coffin for the United States.
What is in this bill for Irish in Ireland that want to legally immigrate to America as our forefathers did
Illegal is still illegal. No benefits for illegel entry6 regardless of the reason.
When over 70 % of Americans are against this mockery of justice, voting these idiots out in November is a must !

I agree. Any child over the age of 13 should be given citizen ship but should be made to pass the test by the time their 19 or should be sent back to their country. New babies should not be or under 13.
