How Bill Clinton slapped down John Edwards over his sex scandal

Payback is a bitch, especially when it is over sexual matters.

It turns out that former senator John Edwards desperately called Bill Clinton in 2008 when the Rielle Hunter scandal broke and wanted some supportive words from Clinton that would help with the media firestorm.

Despite the fact that his wife has terminal cancer, Edwards had embarked on a major affair with Hunter, a videographer, who was then working on his campaign.

Now he needed Clinton to speak out.

This was the same John Edwards who, during the Monica Lewinsky scandal in 1997 said "I think this President has shown a remarkable disrespect for his office, for the moral dimensions of leadership, for his friends, for his wife, for his precious daughter. It is breathtaking to me the level to which that disrespect has risen."

As Politico magazine reports today in a profile on Clinton the Clinton people were ready for him this time

"John Edwards called, seeking a statement of support from Clinton when his affair with Rielle Hunter exploded publicly. A loyalist with a long memory, (Doug) Band sent back word, asking whether Edwards recalled his own denunciation of Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky controversy."

Touche as the French say.

They're both alike. Neither worth a dime as men or leaders.
This is hilarious actually. I remember when bill after finally being caught red handed in his philandering, got religion. He asked jesse jackson to be his "spiritual counselor" and started having the "reverend" "counsel" him on a weekly basis. The "counseling" continued until the "reverends" own mistresses started to appear. I think then they both started getting spiritual guidance from the "reverends" Jimmy Swaggert and al sharpton.
Hey Dennis, couldn't they just check that Lisbeth Lyons for bronzer streaks? LOL
Rielle Hunter is just the kind of woman who would be involved with Johnny (his legal birth name). Eliz. Edwards didn't deserve the treatment she received from her shallow ego-driven husband and his ditzy mistress. DennisQ: I do NOT like Boehner; agree with you about him. I'm a registered independent, but I know that NOT ALL Republicans are Tea Party people, even if they're totally disgusted with Washington politicians, and NOT ALL Republicans are interested in other people's sex lives. The politicians of BOTH parties have abused the trust of the voters who elected them with their disgusting sexual escapades. Sex or not(who knows), Kennedy was involved in the death of a young woman and the cover-up of the circumstances. Shame on all of them.
More about Boehner. He knew about Mark Foley long before the story broke. Like Dennis Hastert, the two of them decided the best course was to say nothing until after the election. Hastert was ruined by the story, but Boehner somehow managed to avoid being implicated in an outrageous cover-up.

And now Boehner's response to questions about Lisbeth Lyons is the pretend he didn't hear the question. It appears that John Boehner is 99% opportunist and 1% something else, but whatever it is, it's not statesman.

In the wake of L'Affaire Foley, Republicans stopped nattering about other people's sex lives. It took them nearly a year to get back in the groove. They're going out of their minds with Christine O'Donnell, who says she tried it and didn't like it. Now that's a Republican!
I can't imagine what life must be like for Elizabeth Edwards; finding herself in her final days with preschool children and realizing the person you should be able to lean on in life is a total human fraud. The only person worse in this picture, is the opportunist Real Hunter, who thought it more important to display herself and her affair, than think of how much a dying women could endure.
All of this is par for the course for our democratic pol's over here. They are in politics for the power and for themselves. They talk a good game but they do not have an ounce of "care" for the people they represent. You guys in Ireland should not be fooled by these American libs.
where was dennis q when teddy k was delivering inebriated speeches with a glowing nose and a stuttering speech in the halls of congress?
What did Edwards think Clinton would do? Publicly absolve him? Try to smooth things out with Elizabeth Edwards? The Senator should have thought for a moment before he made that call. He acted out of weakness.
If a scandal brings down John Boehner, it may elevate Eric Cantor to leadership of the House Republicans. That would actually work to the Republicans' advantage because Cantor is a straight shooter.

I honestly don't know what's keeping Boehner afloat. He appears to need a few stiff drinks to fortify himself before giving an important speech. There would be a certain poetic justice if it turned out that he's not the paragon of virtue he pretends to be.

And here the tie-in you asked for: The more shake-ups in Washington, the fewer officials are invested in the increasingly discredited 9/11 Commission report . . . and the closer we are to a real investigation. 'Tis a consummation devoutly to be wished.
Is that all ye got dennis? Don't you think this all ties in to building 7 on 911 somehow?
Enterprising reporters will be digging up John Boehner quotes if there's any truth to this Lisbeth Lyons rumor. Supposedly the New York Times will be publishing a report of the Republican leader's affair with a blonde lobbyist.

It will be an epic collapse if Boehner's forced to explain the when where and what. I've been wondering why the press has failed to report Boehner's inebriated appearance and slurred speech as he's addressed the members of Congress on the House floor. Say what you will about Brian Cowen, at least he remembers all the words to songs like "Lake Ponchartrain." I'm not sure Boehner could even pronounce it.

I just couldn't tell her that I ran away
From jail on an old Texas plain.
I prayed in my heart I would never be found
On the banks of the Old Pontchartrain.

Then one day a man put his hand on my arm
And said I must go west again.
I left her alone without saying goodbye,
On the banks of the Old Pontchartrain
John edwards is and was a narcicistic sociopath whose hypocrisy knew no bottom. Running for president on the campaign he was against poverty, while living in an ostentatious 35,000 sf. mansion. His ill gotten gains to wealth was for his ability to lie to gullible/naive juries in the south when he was suing the hell out of doctors and health insurance companies....and people wonder why health costs are astronomical in the US? John edwards is the poster child for skyrocketing costs. But I am sure there is a longing and soft spot in the hearts for john from the editors of irish central....He speaks their victimhood language.
