Casey Anthony

An average day in any media organization consists of several news meeting and IrishCentral is no different.

On Wednesday, we sat in our editor’s office and discussed the biggest stories of the day.

IrishCentral endeavors to report on all things Irish, if something breaks at home in Ireland we want to be the first port of call from our Irish-American readers. We aim to inform, educate, entertain and promote lively debate. Our harshest critics would say we tick few of these boxes. Regardless, every day our limited staff here put enormous effort into trying to reach that goal.

During Wednesday’s meeting our publisher told us he had read somewhere Casey Anthony had a shamrock tattoo.

He was intrigued by the prospect; there must be some Irish connection there. After some digging around online we discovered an interview with her tattoo artist and photos on Fox News. It was confirmed, the shamrock tattoo existed. We even unearthed pictures of a drunken Anthony exposing her mid riff and showing the world her tiny green shamrock tattoo.

Then some more news stories revealed that the 25-year-old particularly liked the symbol of Ireland—so we ran with the story, much to the disgust of some IrishCentral readers, with the headline “Casey Anthony is the girl with the shamrock tattoo -Not guilty verdict may be ‘luck of the Irish’”.

Our Facebook page blew up.

On Thursday morning when I arrived at the office at 6.45am I stared blankly at the screen as I quickly scanned some of the comments.

“Why is this garbage posted? I thought better of this site.”

“There is no reason for a post like this...except to incite anger & hatred”.

“It’s high time Irish central STOP making...fools of the Irish and start reporting on worthy news with PROPER FACT headlines.”

These are just a few examples of some of the more mild mannered commentators on our Facebook page.

The damage was done. I immediately emailed the editorial team as we had just published another feature on the Anthony case, in which the 25-year-old had professed a desire to adopt an Irish child.

After a tense morning we assembled for our midday meeting yesterday. I told assembled staff members we had gone too far, this was a very sensitive issue and people were fascinated by this case.

My editor, who has been around the racetrack a few more times than I, insisted we had just reported the facts.

I argued it was the wrong angle to take, at the center of this case was the unexplained murder of a innocent little girl.

My editor rebuked that a jury had found her innocent of murder.

I insisted that above all Anthony was guilty of mistreating her daughter Caylee, which for most human beings is a horrendous prospect.

Another staff writer reminded me that countless children are mistreated ever day and lose their lives in tragic circumstances.

We sat there in a heated debate for at least five minutes.

So the questions remains…were we wrong to report that Casey Anthony has a shamrock tattoo?

I don’t think so. It’s a fact. However it was never our aim to trivialize the sensitivity of the case.

So to all those we offended, I do offer a sincere apology.

you did not post both comments.
Why wasnt my post posted????????????????
I wish the the media would just shut up about this murderer. I hope the idiots out there do not spend a penny on her books or anything else she wants to offer.
If you don't think you were wrong in running that story, you are not only insensitive but a**holes. who cares what that slut has tattooed on her ass.
walter: The lead DA on tv last night is also ad idem...that is not to say I don't understand why it is this verdict is not well received...offences involving children are always very emotive and distressing...often more so for those with no connection with the case whatsoever...RIP Caylee
This is a very emotional issue both here in the USA and around the world. It was news and you would have been taken to task if you hadn't reported it. The problem may have been you're last comment about the luck of the Irish. For those of us on this side of the pond who are proudly of Irish descent that went too far. After all an innocent little girl died and was stuffed in a bag then dumped in the woods. Where was her luck?
Susanne: It will never happen (her adopting any child), so again who cares about the shamrock tattoo?
walter:Precisiely!...as I tried to argue on Niall's DSK post...and got almost as hostile a reception as Casey Anthony for making such an assertion...even being accused of having a hole in the head or that might have been another threat...a not guilty verdict is not a finding of innocence per se but the jury must acquit where there is not enough to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt...I rest my case...Slow learners can be dangerous...!
Those who continue to persecute and malign Ms. Casey Anthony are the Living Dead with arms extending, fingers pointing, mouths wide opening and evil proclivities protruding. http://roma.indymedia.org/printable/taxonomy/term/1549 http://www.sosbeevfbi.com/statement.html http://www.sosbeevfbi.com/oliverwendallhol.html http://sosbeevfbi.ning.com/profiles/blogs/the-fbicia-turn-civil-society
She was not found to be innocent. She was found "not guilty." Big difference.
It is the District Attorney, who has to prove that Casey is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. I am not going to judge the poor girl. She is being determined guilt by her life style. I hope this experence will change her ways.
I say ditto to Borefield. Nancy Grace had this woman tried, convicted and in the chair before they even arrested her the first time. Now after the prosecutors went in chests pumped up and went after murder one and lost it's the fault of the jurors. Bullsh&*. Nancy Grace should have to do ten to fifteen for blinding America to what really matters. INNOCENT until PROVEN Guilty. They didn't prove anything.
Casey Anthony was (and is) mentally ill. I'm sure that 3 years in the Gladiatrix academy hasn't helped her. I think her tattoo is probably a "Four Leaf Clover". In the American Prison system a "shamrock" has a particular meaning and you can be killed for displaying it.
Reporting on the tattoo was one thing, but saying that "it was the luck of the Irish" getting the not guilty verdict infers that Irish people murder their kids and are lucky enough to get away with it. This is a fine headline for a trashy publication but probably not one that the Irish Voice wants to be associated with.
Ancavker: Who knows? Who cares? She was found not guilty, but she didn't report her own daughter was missing for 31 days? And, she wants to adopt a baby from Ireland? WHO CARES? Alot of people in the US care.
