"We're not giving up on immigration reform," vowed Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) as he addressed an event hosted by the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform.

Schumer was a surprise speaker at the packed immigration meeting which was held at the community services center in Sunnyside Thursday night.

He outlined the challenges facing the Senate bill which he has co-authored with South Carolina Republican Lindsey Graham.

Schumer pulled no punches when he said the effort needed another Republican backer in the Senate.

"But," he said, "that's why we need your help."

"We're about ready to go...We're not there yet but we're getting there."

Schumer said there was one solid reason for backing immigration reform, "Immigrants make America better."

And he said, "the more Irish there are in America, the better America is!"

He emphasized that the effort was truly bipartisan and also enjoyed broad support from Labor, big business and religious groups.

About 350 people attended the meeting which was addressed by Bruce Morrison and Ciaran Staunton from the ILIR and representatives from leading Irish organizations including the AOH, GAA and United Irish Counties.

Schumer reminded the crowd that one of the requirements for the new bill would be the ability to speak English.

"That shouldn't be a problem for the Irish," he quipped.

Yes but that is the main reason, anything else is superfluous. You sound like you have some smarts and gumption, someone who would be an asset to my country, a welcome addition. The problem is we have 20 million illegals who all want special dispensation too and get the benefits of US citizenship. We need to be careful about who comes in.
You've listed 1 reason, Can you explain the procedure on getting a green card while I'm in Ireland please? Do you even you how many greed cards Ireland gets each year? Do some research please... Border control, I agree, but what about all 12 million here now that have sacrificed see their families for so long, some I know have buried their parents back home, unable to go to the funerals...
richie: I already listed your benefits, you are in my country, illegally I add. You need to leave and enter my country legally. My questions on how you pay taxes was my curiosity on how the ice people aren't on to you. If you can be here like this how many jihadis are here? We need to control our borders/
Oh and by the way, I can be here without paying taxes, I choose to do so. So I dont know where you were going with that point
Can you please list the benefits you say i am getting? this should be interesting... As far as the details on my taxes, you'll have to get in contact with my accountant, I have a corp which I legally opened with a Tax ID and I also pay my taxes for my Tax ID number, dont know how you didn't know that when you are in a discussion about immigration reform. Interesting enough for you???
richiem: You evidently are getting a lot of benefit from paying US taxes, you are here. Please explain the details of how you file tax returns, pay your estimated taxes and get your refunds. All this with a permanent address in the USA and being an illegal resident of the USA? This should be interesting.
I pay my taxes monsoonman, like a lot of illegals. I pay both corp taxes and personal taxes... What benefits am I getting from paying them and who is benefiting from me paying them???
I can understand politicians like schumer who want to open the floodgates because the new "citizens" will be beholding and grateful to the new government daddy and transfer that gratitude to the ballot box when they vote for the big D (Daddy). But can any patriotic US citizen who really cares for the future of this country and who is actually paying the taxes to run it be in favor of granting mass citizenship to millions of illegals?
Will one of you advocates for "REFORM" please explain logically and unemotionally, what it boils down to? If you are looking to streamline 50K illegal Irish to citizenship are you also willing to give the same "rights" to the other 15-20 million illegals? What do you do with the millions upon millions of their relatives and others who want to be US citizens? Just open the floodgates and let anyone be a citizen?...and who should be financially responsible for the burden of "new" US citizens?
Lets keep together and continue to fight for immigration reform for our families and friends
I often wonder how much vote fraud with the help of criminal organizations like ACORN, aid and abet the politicians like schumer to gain and remain in power.
agreed jimmy!
hopefully it will go through soon!
