No Grand Canyon for this legal immigrant over Arizona immigration law
By: Kelly Fincham | Published Friday, December 21, 2012, 11:10 AM | Updated Friday, December 21, 2012, 11:10 AM
Oh well. There'll be no Grand Canyon for this legal immigrant as long as Arizona stays a police state.
As Linda Greenhouse says in today's
New York Times the new law is the same as the internal passports systems which were so despised in apartheid South Africa and the former Soviet Union.
How are the police in Arizona going to decide who they think should be holding these internal passports?
What grounds can they really have to decide that "the person is an alien who is unlawfully present in the United States."
How can they tell?
The
Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform reckons there are 50,000 illegal Irish immigrants in the U.S. and there are certainly substantial numbers from other countries in Europe.
How will the Arizona police know who's legal and who's not?
Will they stop me, a white English-speaking woman, or will they stop the bilingual Hispanic woman beside me?
I think we all know the answer to that one.
As protestor Jose Acosta told
CNN on Sunday: "People are going to be stopped just because of the color of [their] skin. And it ain't right...Are they going to be looking for Europeans as well, or is it just the brown people?"
And if I am stopped and they figure I have a funny accent, what then?
Am I supposed to carry my U.S. passport round with me the whole time?
This law makes a moving target of all immigrants in the U.S., legal or no. I think I'll spend my tourism dollars elsewhere.

Down with racism in all its myriad forms.
ritmomente | May 10, 2010, 03:09 PM EDT
So you claim you're armed? With what? How do you plan to use it? I'm not the one in the Twilight.
Monsoonman | May 10, 2010, 09:42 AM EDT
OK rit. I refuse to duel with the unarmed. Quoting from a Twilight Zone episode, you are into the cornfield.
ritmomente | May 10, 2010, 09:12 AM EDT
How would you deport 12,000,000 people. Why don't you sell your house and all your belongings (especially that computer of yours) and give it to the government so they can afford the deportation proceedings. It is simply more economical to fine them and put them on a guest worker visa where they will go home or on a path towards citizenship. You are concerned about you alone and those that look like you.
Monsoonman | May 09, 2010, 06:58 PM EDT
All the more reason to get them out of the USA and give those jobs to US citizens who need them desperately. Charity begins at home, take care of US citizens first, that does not make me a xenophobe, that means I am a concerned citizen of my country.
ritmomente | May 09, 2010, 01:50 PM EDT
Most undocumented pay taxes and pay into social security, which under the broken current laws, they'll never see. You just want your Confederacy back.
Monsoonman | May 09, 2010, 01:00 PM EDT
Seriously did you get a bite on your snout? I'll tell you what the first rights are here in the USA, the rights of taxpaying US citizens.
ritmomente | May 09, 2010, 12:43 PM EDT
Monsoonman, by the way you and Irishandproud write, it seems as if it's ok to beat up and rape any illegal that is here. I read nothing of human rights in anything you two write.
Monsoonman | May 09, 2010, 11:47 AM EDT
I fail to see ANY logic about a Mexican woman being raped and beaten deserving it because she is illegal. What kind of cujo-like logic can come up with a scenario like that to illustrate a point? Did you get bit on the snout by a rabid bat? Jes sayin'
ritmomente | May 07, 2010, 01:51 PM EDT
What if a Mexican woman in Arizona gets raped and beaten? Does she deserve it because she's "illegal" as you say?
ritmomente | May 07, 2010, 01:51 PM EDT
IrishandProud is a xenophobe, racist and hypocrite.
IrishAndProud | May 05, 2010, 11:47 PM EDT
That's all right, trulyirish...you and your three or four friends keep your money. I think Arizona will do just fine, with its 70% support from the American people. THANK YOU, ARIZONA!!!!!
Monsoonman | May 05, 2010, 09:21 AM EDT
Sheriff Joe Arpaio decided not to run for Governor because the present republican governor just signed the illegal alien bill and gained favor with the voters. I just heard an interview with him on the radio. Sheriff Joe is a hugely popular sheriff with the citizens of Arizona.
DennisQ | May 04, 2010, 01:00 PM EDT
Arizona's been stung by a boycott before. When nutty right winger Evan Meacham's first official act as governor was to repeal Martin Luther King Day, the subsequent boycott cost the state millions. The joke at the time was, "Why did Evan Meacham cancel Easter?" "Because he heard some of the eggs were going to be colored." Loonies like Meacham are still around. Sheriff Joe Arpaio just dropped out of the race for governor because he was afraid he'd be indicted.

My Peruvian fiance' and myself are getting married inside the Grand Canyon and plan on spending out vacation in Arizona where the Governor is not afraid to take a stand against illegal immigrants.

RACIST is the word, POLICE STATE is what is being implemented here, you would have to be blind not to see it. I was planning a trip to Arizona but like so many of my friends, community and family we will NO LONGER be going to Arizona whether the law is passed or not. I refuse to support a state and its people who are so openly racist. Arizonians who like this law, GOOD LUCK
glkatan | Apr 29, 2010, 11:52 PM EDT
I live in AZ. You people have no idea what it is like here. The state is overrun with Hispanics. They are draining $ from social services, health care, education, police, prisons, etc.... AZ taxpayers have to foot the bill. All we are asking is for them to enter the country legally like everyone else. The new law is great. The law states that the police cannot ask about citizenship unless they have already commited a another crime. Don't judge anyone until you know the facts.
allentown | Apr 28, 2010, 11:47 PM EDT
>>I had hoped to visit the Grand Canyon later this year but will now choose another state. If enough of us boycott Arizona, it may think twice about this law<< Boycotting cuts both ways. Whoever boycotts Arizona, publish their names.
IrishAndProud | Apr 28, 2010, 10:09 PM EDT
You hit it, Galway. The libs like to accuse the Tea Party folks (and conservatives, in general) of being violent and 'racist'...and yet look where all the violence CONSISTENTLY is: on the LEFT, like at these protest rallies with illegals, in Arizona. I mean, when was the last time anyone saw a conservative riot? It's always LEFTISTS!
rpmschevy | Apr 28, 2010, 09:39 PM EDT
So Kelly, what should Arizona do? I can not believe all you bleeding heart liberals. When do you stop your antics? Illegal activity is a crime, and who is to pursue criminals, police. Who is to protect American citizens and legal immigrants, police? When do we stop supporting criminals with all of our hard earned money? Write about that.
galway2001 | Apr 28, 2010, 09:33 PM EDT
HEY Stupid illegal means illegal the are breaking the law plain and simple when the libs can't get they're way they get quite upset. who the heck wants to listen to al sharpton
Monsoonman | Apr 28, 2010, 07:23 PM EDT
I listened to a Green card holder today, he said his instructions directly from INS were to carry the card with him at all times, in case he was asked for ID by authorities. He just assumed he would be asked for proof of being here legally because he has a heavy accent...Is that racial profiling?....The inmates are in control of the asylum when you can't even keep your borders secure and illegal aliens can't be asked for ID. Scotty beam me up!
IrishAndProud | Apr 28, 2010, 04:47 PM EDT
Riiiiighht, 'Donny.' This couldn't POSSIBLY have to do with Arizona being at wit's end, because they're being overrun with illegal aliens who they can't afford, are commiting crime, and bleeding the state dry of resources (and whom the feds are flatly ignoring). No, that couldn't be it. It's because (voice lowers to a whisper, here)...'we all know they're racists.' HA HA HA HA! Is that all you have?
FastEddy | Apr 28, 2010, 04:16 PM EDT
LOL ... There is one born every minute. " ... How will the Arizona police know who's legal and who's not? ... " By checking his/her voter registration? ... fur sure .... LOL
DonnyHL | Apr 28, 2010, 03:40 PM EDT
Kelly, I agree with you 110% here. This is just an excuse for racisl profiling and a disgrace. No human being (legal or illegal)should be treated in such a dispicable manner.
Nicomax | Apr 28, 2010, 02:24 PM EDT
Over the next five months a large number of Hispanic workers will regularly enter Arizona and should be careful to have papers with them, These workers are not accustomed to such scrutiny since as Major League Baseball players, they live a privileged life. Can't wait until they pull over Manny Ramirez.

knockatee wrote: "I had hoped to visit the Grand Canyon later this year but will now choose another state. Just the sheer volume of pro-Arizona comments on this site is indicative, of that -- let alone every single national poll.

Easy to say when you don't live there and suffer the crimes committed by illegal MEXICANS crossing the border. Lets stop the PC baloney and tell it like it is. It isn't the illegal Irish it's the MEXICANS pure and simple. So, stay home.
jmacroibin | Apr 28, 2010, 12:36 PM EDT
I don't think you will be missed. Probably a good thing because you spout so much BS you might fill in the canyon.

If you come to my front door, I will welcome you inside; if you climb through my window in the dead of night, I will do whatever necessary to repel you.
KMcSinger | Apr 28, 2010, 10:34 AM EDT
It seems to me that most anti immigration supporters are racist. If so, they should wonder why it's US policy to offer more visas to 3rd world countries than to countries like Ireland. Is it because the US only wants uneducated immigrants to do the jobs that we won't do? And, if so, what's the big deal? Why this irrational hatred of illegal immigrants who are working for peanuts and have no rights?
DLW12183 | Apr 28, 2010, 10:32 AM EDT
I have a trip planned to Arizona this September. I thought I might cancel for security concerns but now I am going since it will be safer. Still staying away from Phoenix and the south border.
Fran Connor | Apr 28, 2010, 10:23 AM EDT
I'm sure Arizona will miss you, Kelly.
kelauggie1 | Apr 28, 2010, 09:55 AM EDT
Do you wonder why the Mexican government requires visitors to provide proof of citizenship when people are in their country? And they require you to show a visa when there more than 6 months? It is so they can be sure who is in their country and why. So when AZ does the same thing, it makes them a nazi state? Get over it - it's time to start enforcing our own laws. I'll bet for every one like you who will avoid AZ, there will be many who visit to support their stance.
knockatee | Apr 28, 2010, 09:53 AM EDT
I had hoped to visit the Grand Canyon later this year but will now choose another state. If enough of us boycott Arizona, it may think twice about this law.
IrishAndProud | Apr 27, 2010, 11:01 PM EDT
But, Ms.Gail (and Taran)...according to some on this site (not me), you're not 'really Irish' if you're not pro-illegal alien.
TaranOconner | Apr 27, 2010, 07:27 PM EDT
What 'Internal Passports' are you talking about Kelly?? Mexico IS NOT internal to the USA any more than Iran is. When in the UK I have to keep my USA Passport available at all times to show that I am NOT ILLEGAL. Arizona is PROTECTING the Rights of their LEGAL Citizens and other LEGAL people of the USA! There are EASY ways to be here LEGALLY and have been for decades. The only people who worry about the New Arizona Law are NOT supposed to be here anyway. Wake UP!
jacersisityourself | Apr 27, 2010, 05:25 PM EDT
So Kelly tells us she is a legal immigrant. She's also told us that she's UK-born but was raised up in Drogheda, Ireland, and so holds an Irish passport and now holds an American passport. Kelly, are you a CIA person? How many passports do you hold? Do you collect them as mementoes? Tell us when you get your Mexican and Mid-eastern countries passports. We look fwd to yr posts fm those countries. That Arizona thing is nonsense; shame on the law-makers there.
Ms.Gail | Apr 27, 2010, 02:54 PM EDT
My grandfather was so proud of his citizenship that he carried his pappers and showed them to anyone he could buttonhole. I know there are plenty of illegal Irish in the US, I'm related to many of them. That doesn't mean I think what they're doing is right. Especially the ones who say it's just too much trouble to bother.
Monsoonman | Apr 27, 2010, 12:55 PM EDT
Where does it say in the US constitution that non citizens have constitutional rights, especially if they are here ILLEGALLY.
