Interesting comments from Liam Neeson on the Troubles in our news section.

He's said very little over the years about the conflict which would have been just starting when he was a teenager in Ballymena.

But at least I can understand where he's coming from. He's from the North. He lived it.

What I've never been able to understand is the way people in the South said so little for so long.

Partition seems to have partitioned the Irish mentally as well as physically.

One of my first jobs in journalism was in a national paper in Dublin in the mid-80s.

I was the trainee entrusted with the task of ringing round the fire and police stations across the country to see if anything newsworthy had happened.

Back then, very little happened on a Friday night in most of the 26 counties.

But the stations near the border had it all.

Fires, knee-capping, hijackings.

"Ah don't bother adding them in," said a senior news editor. "That's only the North."

Most of the people in the southern part of Ireland did not get much info on what was happening in the north, because the government had banned national television and newspapers from letting the people know the truth about what was happening or why it happened in the first place.
