From Celtic Tiger to Paddy Porkies - pigs are back in fashion in Irish homes

Pigs are big in Ireland. So big in fact that applications to keep pigs have risen by 360 percent over the past two years.

That's a lot of pigs; 687 in fact. All being kept in back gardens across the country.

Conor O'Clery, writing in the GlobalPost, says the rise in unemployment has driven the penchant for the Irish keeping pigs at home.

Sties apparently are popping up like kudzu in backyards from Magherafelt to Mallow.

From Celtic Tiger to Paddy Porkies, it's quite the comedown for a country where hot tubs and decks were once de rigeur.

But then again, Ireland is a member of the Euro "PIIGS" zone (Portugal, Italy, Ireland Greece and Spain), the E.U. countries which are up to their snouts in debt.

Isn't Paddy Porkies kinda racist? Or is it a bad punchline for an Irish joke about fat Irishmen. Either way this offends me. ;)
The writer knows - it also serves to keep the chill off the bones on those all too cold nights.
Well, you've gotta do what 'ch gotta do. Better to depend on ones self than look for handouts. We've talked about keeping some chickens for eggs and meat, but I balked at a cow, I don't care how much milk we swill down, I can't see myself churning butter in my retirement years and Lord knows I can't afford the cholestoral pills if I start on the cream!!!
been there when the pigs were and now there back oink oink
