Was it a mistake for Cardinal Dolan to give the DNC his blessing?

Cardinal Dolan stood on the platform of the 2012 Democrat National Convention Thursday night and gave the gathering his blessing with a closing prayer. This, in spite of the fact boos still echoed from the assembled crowd who had earlier fought to keep even the mention of God out of their platform.
What was he thinking? True he had a bit of a pro life message in the prayer, but he was thoroughly F bombed for that later on Twitter and other social media by democrat activists.
But if there is a major political party in the United States that has set its sights on any more anti Catholic policies than the Democrat Party, please let me know.
The Democrat Party can’t state any stronger than it does, it is committed to taxpayer paid abortions, including late term (9 months). Isn’t the church firmly against infanticide?
The Democrats firmly stand for free taxpayer supplied birth control. Their featured speaker and poster child, activist Sandra Fluke, militantly stood for her right for taxpayer paid birth control. Did she infer it was a God given right, or is she an atheist?
To illuminate the matter, the convention floor was flooded with free condoms adorned with anti Romney/Ryan ads on the packaging.
The Democrats denied 3 times before the rooster crowed Thursday morning, an addendum to restore God back into the platform. It was plain from the crowd roar, the the majority did not want mention of God in the platform. But moderator, LA Mayor Villaraigosa barreled over their protests and inserted God back in the platform, knowing it would be political suicide for the Democrats if they willfully left God out of their platform.
Under provisions of Obamacare, Catholic & other religious institutions will be forced to provide and pay for birth control as well as abortion services for their employees. These institutions have joined together to sue the administration for forcing upon them policy that totally violates what their religions stand for.
By performing the closing prayer and blessing upon the convention, Cardinal Dolan puts his stamp of approval on it. Perhaps he thinks he can gain favor from this or score political points?
Somewhere along the line, politics and religion intersect and religious leaders become more like politicians. They tread a thin line of trying to appease the state at the expense of their religions and moral convictions.
What happened to the religion built upon the rock of Peter? Early believers were crucified for their religious beliefs, rather than bow to the immoral will of the state. Perhaps it is time for the church to do some deep soul searching and see what they really stand for these days.
Perhaps it would have made a much stronger statement to steer clear of the convention, rather than appear to give it tacit approval by his appearance.
As a wise man once said, if you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.

In an interview earlier this year, I think on CBS, Timothy Cardinal Dolan stated he would not endorse any candidate or try to influence votes. Jokingly he said anyone he backed would probably lose a lot of votes.

Monsoonman... Record shows: Roe v. Wade was passed during the Nixon administration(1973)and was written by Republican appointee Harry Blackmun, joined by fellow Republican appointees Potter Stewart, Lewis Powell, and Warren Burger; Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992) was written by a plurality of Sandra Day O’Connor, Anthony Kennedy, and David Souter, all appointed by Republicans. Historically, you're pointing the finger at the wrong party and the wrong president. Obama "didn't build" the case for abortion in this country, the GOP did then turned around and used it as a political platform.

Obama vociferously supported late term abortions, even arguing that the aborted still living baby lying on the sink struggling for life should not be attended to. You immoral, amoral, moral relativists, should get face to face with what you are really supporting by voting dem

If you followed both conventions closely on tv, you will note that the media took care of any problems with the endorsement of religion. They cut Dolan out of any tv coverage at all.

@eiramach: Misinformation is in the eye of the beholder. As Willie Boy said, "it all depends on what the meaning of 'is' is". @Frosty38: When you paint Dolan with a "broad" brush, you should use a paint variety instead of the tooth fairy type.

As a Irish Catholic and a Dem from Cambridge Ma, the idea of a priest doing that or a Nun for that matter, I just can't see it. Our priest and nuns were of both American and from Ireland not once did we come across any of that pedophile stuff. we played baseball with our nuns and we had a center for gathering at night . we did not have our own Basketball courts so we walked to the school about 8 miles. I loved mtg upbringing and would not change any of it.

I fail to see the benefit of having a pedophile protector speak at a political gathering. It is one thing for the narrow minded rich Republicans to have this piece of garbage at their convention, but the Democrats are supposedly for the poor and disadvantaged. What misguided idiot orchestrated having Dolan at the Democratic Convention knowing full well that he was involved with protecting the priests who raped children and bought off the victims. How could they associate themselves with him. They are now acting like the Republicans; aligning themselves with repugnant people for votes. Another political party is needed.

When I began to read this very informative article, I checked to see if I were still on Irish Central and to my utter amazement I discovered I was. No, Cardinal Dolan's closing prayer at the Dem's Convention didn't put his stamp of approval on abortion or any other immmoral activity. It was merly a diplomatic ploy by the R.C's leading U.S. prelate, and let's hope that he did more good than harm by saying that prayer.

From the Republican Platform: "We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment's protections apply to unborn children." This platform plank is an atrocity that would ban all abortions in the US, from nine-year-old children to 60-year-old women, including victims of incest, rape, and life-threatening medical conditions. But just in case the GOP's war on women and children is not perfectly clear to all, the Platform adds this: "It is all the more important that the Congress ... ***reject*** agreements whose long-range impact on the American family is ominous or unclear. These include the U.N. Convention on Women's Rights, the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and the U.N. Arms Trade Treaty...." Never has the choice been more clear for any voter who truly cares about protecting lives!

Where is this crazy misinformation from? Not from the Democratic Platform, for sure! The only mentions of abortion in the Platform support existing law as decided by Roe v Wade: "The Democratic Party strongly and unequivocally supports Roe v. Wade and a woman’s right to make decisions regarding her pregnancy, including a safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay. We oppose any and all efforts to weaken or undermine that right. Abortion is an intensely personal decision between a woman, her family, her doctor, and her clergy; there is no place for politicians or government to get in the way. We also recognize that health care and education help reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and thereby also reduce the need for abortions. We strongly and unequivocally support a woman’s decision to have a child by providing affordable health care and ensuring the availability of and access to programs that help women during pregnancy and after the birth of a child, including caring adoption programs.~~~ Pres Obama and the Party are committed to supporting family planning around the globe to help women care for their families, support their communities, and lead their countries to be healthier and more productive. That’s why, in his first month in office, Pres Obama overturned the 'global gag rule,' a ban on federal funds to foreign family planning organizations that provided information about, counseling on, or offered abortions. And that is why the administration has supported ***lifesaving*** family planning health information and services.”

Interesting that you name yourself after a Native American location of heroism and infamy...Or is it just a fact you hurt your knee? If you are indeed cognizant of NA history, what are your thoughts on Elizabeth Warrens claim to be a NA in order to get an affirmative action tenured Harvard position. When in reality she has not a drop of Cherokee blood?

I partially agree with you Mr. Knee...He should not have associated the church with an anti God/pro infanticide group which today's democrat party clearly is.

I'm a a progressive, and a Catholic, and I think Dolan was wrong to associate the Catholic Church with a bunch of abortionists. I also think no Catholic prelate should officiate at the convention of the warmongering Republicans.
