President Obama to focus on making America competitive!

Judging by the heading, this means the President will be turning his policies 180 degrees from where they have been over the past two years. To a bystander, this administration has seemed to be anti business, anti growth and pro big government every chance it got. The cherry on top was a massive health care bill turning 1/5 of the nations economy over to government controlled socialized medicine.

If the President is serious about making America competitive again, I can make a few quick suggestions, from my humble perspective:

Open up Americas vast oil and gas reserves that have been cordoned off to exploration by extreme environmentalists. Allow the development and extraction of huge oil reserves from Alaskas ANWR. This barren piece of land is close to already in place infrastructure on the North Slope and would be up and running quickly. We are like the crew of the ship adrift 100 miles off the coast of South America dying of thirst, but don’t have enough sense to lower down the bucket to get the fresh water that flows out to sea from the great Amazon river.

OK, America doesn’t export enough, so here’s a uniquely American product that we are awash in. We can export it which will instantly boost our production and make us competitive at the same time. This products export will have another effect beneficial to Americas economy, it will hamstring our competitors by decreasing their production. It will also hamper our competitors efficiency and endurance, kind of like putting a 50 lb. weight penalty on a horse race: Lets export 80% of our trial lawyers to foreign countries.

Lets lower taxes for all the taxpaying Americans. Encourage employment in America by lowering the tax rate for all American Corporations who manufacture products and employ American citizens in America.

Reform our education system! Promote, push and champion the hard sciences. We need to be at the cutting edge of technology and new ideas. Loosen the grip of educations organized labor and make our education system a merit based outcome system, rather than constraining it to conform to what the latest negotiated labor contracts are.

If I heard President Obama champion any of these ideas and actually follow through by executing them, I would become his greatest fan...OK I got a little carried away, maybe not his greatest yet, there are several other issues he has to deal with first, but any of these would be a great start.

The whole middle east is a powder keg ready to explode. The long term government of Tunis has been toppled, there are riots in the streets of Egypt and Yemen. It could easily spread to Saudi Arabia and the rest of the oil producers. If the Jihadists take control of the oil supply to the world, will we then try to develop our own oil resources? After it is too late and oil hits 300 per barrel? The ones behind the policies that have left us vulnerable to outside forces, should be forced to pay for this. Here we are sitting on some of the greatest deposits of oil and coal and not tapping into them.

That is exactly why we need to exploit all areas of of energy production. The cleanest renewable resource we have is hydro electric yet environmentalists lawsuits have virtually litigated them out of existence and are even suing to tear down existing hydro electric dams. So we are more reliant on coal fired plants as a result. Also check out what solar generating facilities have to go through before they get approval, they must sign agreements with labor unions and wade through environmental lawsuits. By the time these projects get milked by every grifter in imagination the end cost of the "energy" produced is way out of line.

As long as we keep falling back on fossil fuels we enable our nations dependency and impact the future health of our kids. Asthma rates in children under the age of five have increased more than 160% in the last decade. It's time for us to get serious about clean energy and provide tax breaks for those who utilize it in all forms. A good example of a clean energy city prototype is "Smart City" Boulder Colorado. Here a complete city is powered off of a clean energy grid fed by wind and solar power. The homes have "smart" appliances and plug in cars, all fed by the grid. China while internally advancing it's own green programs is also loaning money around the world to be paid back not in cash but in cheap oil deals. The day is rapidly approaching where this could drastically effect U.S. oil prices. Times run out. We can't wait any longer.

Until "they" come up with a cheaper more efficient alternative form of energy than fossil fuels, don't you think it would be smart to exploit your own vast reserves rather than bankrupt yourselves paying for it from foreign sources who want nothing but to see your country fail? There are plenty of smart people trying to find alternatives, but most of them need to be heavily subsidized by tax money in order to make them feasible. Ask T. Boone Pickens about wind power. Jes sayin'

You failed to mention jobs lost in 2010 mac. Seems to me I've heard the reason for the soaring gas prices was because if China & India's gas consumption.

Opening ANWR is taking another step into the past. The world including the emerging markets of China and India are embracing clean energy for 2 reasons. One, it's better for the environment and two it has the greatest potential for job growth than any other industry. Also, a wee bit of a reality check, from February 2001, Bush’s first full month in office, through January 2009, his last, the economy added just 1 million jobs. By contrast, in 2010 alone, the economy added at least 1.1 million jobs. Let's give some credit where credit is due.

Your right dennis, we're in no danger of a takeover from the right. The right wants smaller govt. & the people to be represented by policians that honor the peoples wishes. Your crowd wants to tell everbody what to do & control everything like any good commie would want. The ideas should come from the people not a controlling government. Looks to me the right showed up big time at the last election.

Is there really a right wing in America? You can't tell from what this fellow Farnan has to say. Anybody could write the kind of stuff he does.

We're in no danger of a takeover from the right. These people have no ideas - all they have is a few outlets for so called right wing "thought." But it's all a spoof. Neither Farnan nor O'Reilly nor Hannity are putting out ideas that are worth considering. They're picking up paychecks, but they're not making anything happen.

O'Ryan's reply to the State of the Union was a disgrace. Bachman's reply was ludicrous. These people are not leaders. The right isn't even showing up anymore.

Ed, why don't you tell the truth, like since 1976 to 2006 the top 1% in the U.S. have had increased wealth at the rate of 256%, the middle class 17% and the lower class 11%? Why do you hide behind the sunglasses?

Interesting that you talk about "exporting trial lawyers to foreign countries" - I bet you also are against unions. These two groups give the most money to Democratic candidates and are very powerful and there is now a big push with Republicans to do away with both so they can win the 2012 elections.

Hey Ed - do you not know that the education system is part of the states' responsibility? In your home state of California, Republican Gov Arnie (the idiot) ran it into the ground because of his mismanagement Oh, nut job "W" tried to stick his nose in it (leave no child behind, yikes!) for 8 years mind you, and look where we are today? We rank 13th in the world for number of people currently attending college and you really don't want to know the worst stats. Let's just say the Asians FAR surpass us (and most countries in education and will rule the world very soon.
