The American people spoke loud and clear last November when they overturned the status quo of both parties and voted in 87 new citizen legislators. These freshmen/women vowed to bring some sanity to the swampland known as Washington DC. These new legislators see what the budget really is: A vote buying machine designed to keep the established political interests in power.
What is so evil about the country living within its means and having a balanced budget?
Some are saying the divide in America is greater than it has ever been, "a divide between those who work for a living...and those who vote for a living".
Washington is a checkerboard of special interests who pull the pork their way without regard for the general good of America. The Tea Party group of freshmen is a special interest group devoted to the common good of America...Isn't it about time America had it's own special interest group in the capital?
The usual bribery, cajoling, behind the scenes deals and outright bullying seem to have little effect on these freshmen. Seems the usual plum committee assignment, or pork barrel project for their district is not going to alter their campaign promise to their constituents. They are demanding change out of Washington and holding firm.... and Washington has been listening.
In Washington DC where up is down and down is up, where cut really means increase and balanced budget depends on what the meaning of is, is......Special interests squeal like indignant hogs when their government trough gets threatened and lawmakers scatter.
Simple math tells us we have a major problem, we are spending more than a thousand billion more than we take in, just to keep the doors open and the government/nanny state in operation.
Established long term Washington politicians, have aired their attitude toward the new legislators. SE Cupp said, "My head is going to explode", while watching John Kerry on MSNBC: "He's telling the 87 freshman to stay out of it", "We know what we're doing."......Really?
Isn't it the long time, deal making, entrenched politicians of DC that got us into this mess in the first place?
Senators from both parties called this week for the president to become more involved.
“We need leadership,’’ said Senator Scott Brown, Massachusetts Republican. “The president needs to be engaged in these things; he needs to sit down at the table and come up with a compromise that shows true, real leadership in tackling these budget proposals.’’
Well Senator Brown, you might not have gotten the message, but it seems the reason why the budget is in such an impasse is because President Obama got in the middle of negotiations.
Congressman Sonny Bono said "he longed for the sincerity and sanity of Hollywood after serving in Washington DC for a year". I am sure our new citizen legislators, fresh to the scene know exactly what Mr. Bono was talking about. For other points of view visit Carroll Standard:

I think it was spelled out very clearly lad as to what constitutes a national emergency. But of course one mans emergency is another mans opportunity as rahm emmanuel and barack obama have taught us. What is happening now in upside down states/cities/towns and the USA itself is that they are issuing debt just to maintain the status quo. One town in I think Rhode island yesterday declared bankruptcy, its unions and retirees refused to take a haircut and demanded that broke citizens pay even more taxes to maintain their lifestyles. Seems the goose is dead.

Glad you asked Lad: In a case of national emergency the federal debt ceiling would be able to be lifted if a balanced budget ammendment is passed. Since this was one of yer main arguments it seems U can support a bba now.

Gentlemen! a class war is underway in the U.S. the war is aimed at the middle class, already Lieberman and Coburn are looking at ways to cut healthcare to save the defense budget(a budget that is larger than most countries in the world combined). The teaparty is financed by big business including the koch brothers. The gains made in health and education in the 60's are fast disappearing. If a balanced budget amendment is constitutionally passed you therefore cannot exceed that fiscal figure without passing another amendment to the budget.I wonder what happens if you have another war or 9/11 or natural disaster where will the money will come from after all it will be illegal to borrow and how will you fund your ageing infrastructure?.The "balanced budget"option only serves the rich and you cannot see the forest for the trees.

seano..you should really give American liberal talking points a rest since you don't know how and when to use it. You make yourself look just the least bit foolish but what's new for a liberal. You and mcnamara wanted the limit raised but the majority of votes against it were from Dems. You want America to stay strong but it's the Dems that are spending it into oblivion. The conservatives want spending under control to keep the U.S. strong benefiting you. Now a super committee will make new rules that the house can't debate and the senate can't filibuster. If you think this raising of the debt limit was good wait till you see what goes along with it. This super committee is unconstitutional in the first place.

Looks like seano still has his teaphobia. Also I love the economists and accountants on the "progressive" side who have no concept of budgets, income and spending.
But what I love reading through here is the hate, similiar to Seano's irrational fear of Tea, about Koch Brothers. Someone compared them to some evilness and defended the "goodness" of Soros.
How about a little facts folks. Koch Industries, while massive, employees 80,000 people with businesses in more than half the states in the United States, which means they pay millions, possibly into the billions in taxes.
George Soros, liberal fund top dog, man who spent tons to get rid of Bush. Folks he employees 100 people. Folks Soros and his liberal "wisdom" just closed his Hedge fund from the public (Wall Street, Hedge Fund, maker of nothing, except massive wealth for him and his family (his 2 sons are the chairmen of his fund). Remember this is the person who bet, and helped, UK devalue the pound, and made a killing. He has produced NOTHING substantial to the betterment of America. He closed his Hedge Fund because of REGULATION. But Moveon, and Planned Parenthood (an oxymoron there), etc. love him, or at least his moola.

Lad Lad Lad!!! The Tea Party is not affiliated with the mainstream parties, they are trying to stop the US from going over the financial cliff. Could you go on like the US is with your personal finances? I already know the answer. You are welcome to come to a Tea party and meet the folks, you would be treated with respect.

The dollar worldwide has been sought as the stable currency. This default affects not only the American citizen and economy it would also unleash a tsunami of economic havoc on the economies of Europe and the rest of the world. In its aftermath investors worldwide may soon look to another currency to replace the position the dollar has long held. Even if an agreement is reached the perception that our political system is unstable has been etched in financial minds around the world. The Tea Party is looking for “simplistic answers to very complex problems” and they have positioned themselves like bullies holding the fragile economy hostage without understanding that "no" is not always the answer. And to the conservative operatives who thought they could use the Tea Party to attack the current administration in ways the GOP wanted to “seem above” well like Dr. Frankenstein and his creations the monster is out of the box and won’t go back.

seano..I called my reps this morning to tell them not to vote for the new and improved ceiling bill. Now I think I'll call em back. You've given me another reason to be against making a deal with the devil. U.S. defaults and it hurts roohumpers, I'm all for it.

You don't have to be a member of the Tea Party to know that no country can keep on spending, forever, more money than it takes in. We didn't get into this mess overnight and we're not going to get out of it overnight. I don't waste my time playing the "blame game." For years, various Dem. & Rep. presidents and Congress members have contributed to this situation, along with the Am. people. Who returned a check written by the Fed. govt. for anything? We need to cut back in steps and not "pull the rug out" from under our citizens all at once, especially the sick and the elderly. There are things that can be phased out and new limits and/or requirements can be set. Most of us are going to have to adjust to a new lifestyle and a new reality about what the Federal govt. can and can't afford to do. Painful cuts are inevitable, like it or not, if we're going to get our fiscal house in order. It's going to be a long hard-fought process, but we need to start. Btw: I'm an Independent and I think that all of the posters have made some valid points, including Mr. Farnan.
