It's a sad day when a state has to sue the federal government in order to enforce the nations immigration laws. Arizonans have had it with the federal government telling them they have it all under control. Arizona is a main conduit for illegal drug smuggling and illegal aliens into our country. Peaceful neighborhoods find kidnap houses springing up in their midst. Ranchers are inundated with illegal trespassers who, if confronted can sue for harassment by immigration attorneys and some ranchers have been shot. The world is upside down in Arizona.
At a news conference in Phoenix, Governor Brewer said Arizona would counter sue the federal government for the right to police its border with Mexico. She called border security "by far the No. 1 issue" in Arizona. "Our citizens have lived with this dark cloud for too long," the Governor said. "It's time for the federal government to do its job and secure the border."
"Illegal immigration is costing us a billion dollars a year to maintain the level we're at, and the federal government sits by and does nothing," she said. "It's the federal government's responsibility to protect the public safety, health and welfare of the people of this country.
"Arizona did not ask for this fight with the federal government," Brewer said. "But now that we are in it, Arizona will not rest until our border is secured and federal immigration laws are enforced.". With grassroots support & donations from all over the U.S. Brewer says no taxpayer money will be spent on the court fight.
The Chief of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano has repeatedly said our borders are secure. However the boots on the ground in Arizona have a far different view. Local and state law enforcement/ government officials say the borders are as porous as a sieve under the feds policy, drugs and illegals come across at will.
We are either going to be a nation with borders and laws, or sink into being a hazy lawless territory where citizenship means nothing. Enough of the factions who are allowing us to be drowned in illegal immigration in exchange for cheap workers and assured democrat votes. Put the American citizens first: secure our borders and enforce the laws that are on the books.

What right does any person have to enter any country unlawfully? The USA has over 12,000,000 ILLEGALS who take good jobs from Americans for scab wages of their employer who also is in violation of federal law for hireing the ILLEGAL as well as his renter. By not fully enforce federal law on the ILLEGAL's employers & renters and not protecting the border fully, is President Obama putting the ILLEGALS ahead of Americans so that he can pick up the LATINO vote as the tax payer picks up the ILLEGALS tab? One nation has no homeless or ILLEGALS which is the Vatican.

Patriotic Arizona!! Brewer fails to see the difference between patriotism and jingoism as most of the right and obviously Ed Farnan.

The article puts responsibility for porous borders on republicans as well as democrats. The republicans like the cheap labor and the democrats like the fact that they will get an overwhelming batch of new democrat voters. The deck is stacked against the average American taxpayer/citizen by both parties, hence the birth of the Tea Party.

Working people vote their own class interests unless they've been here long enough to have been taken in by Fox News' misrepresentations. The cartoon acknowledges that in its suggestion that if foreign workers were legalized they would vote Democratic. This is a candid admission that the push for an even more restrictive immigration policy is essentially political.
Right wingers have turned conservatism thar a ceann; that is, upside down. There's nothing conservative about using the law to change American customs. This country has always welcomed hard-working, honest people, and it has never insisted as a matter of law that people adopt its customs. There's no pressing need to do either of these things except, of course, the need to suppress the number of working class people who might vote their class interests.
Every time I see the Statue of Liberty I am reminded that America is as much an idea as it is a country. Democracy actually works here, and indeed this country is a beacon of freedom throughout the world. Not everyone who comes to New York is going to make it, but foreigners have been coming here for centuries.

At one time the Brits made English the official/only language of Ireland--but not their own country. Hard to find English spoken in some areas of Londonstan. Another thing I find curious is that the four border states(where the largest number of illegals reside)--CA, AZ, NM, and TX all have Republican governors. What happened to all those illegal Democrat voters--maybe they voted Republican--sheep in some other kind of clothing? Or maybe the employers who hire them, are supporters of the Republican Party, and know how "to get out the vote". As I said, it all seems curious.

Those people have earned the "moral right" to stay here Dennis? Aren't we supposed to be a nation of laws? What about those who have immigrated into our country legally & were granted US citizenship, how do they feel about that? The US needs to enforce its present laws on immigration and make a constitutional ammendment to make English the official and only language. We are getting like the Tower of Babbel & balkanized at the same time. Nations need glue to hold them together and language is that glue.

I agree with your comments. How did a conservative land in the midst of all those liberals? DennisQ must realize that there is, indeed, one law for every state; but that that law IS NOT BEING ENFORCED; and, please. do not cite New York as an example for anything dealing with morality.
DennisQ | Feb 14, 2011, 12:12 AM EST
If you remember your history classes, maloney, you'll recall that the Union as a whole is sovereign over the individual states. There's not going to be one policy for "patriotic" Arizona and a separate policy for presumably "unpatriotic" New York. There will be only one standard over all fifty states, whether that standard fits comfortably in some states more than in others.
Because New York depends on foreign workers there's a de facto amnesty for people whose right to stay here would be challenged in some other part of the country. If you want to take a look at New York's labor force, take the D train in the early morning hours. You will not hear English spoken except with a foreign accent. Those people have earned the moral right to stay in America because they work hard and stay out of trouble.
It's unwise to change national immigration policy simply to accommodate the cranky retirees who've moved to Arizona, large numbers of whom don't contribute anything useful themselves. What would you like to do, maloney? Will you empty the D train of good, hard-working foreigners simply to accommodate a few cranks? You're entitled to your opinion of course, but so far you haven't prevailed. Nor will you. Somos Nueva York, y asi tambien son los Irlandeses.

The Irish Central Picture for the story is Bull#@%*. Visitors to Arizona are very welcome. So are any immigrants that want to make it their home, like most countries just ask and fill out the paperwork...

Nativism has been a strain in American political thought for at least a century but has never really prevailed. America has had open borders since earliest days, and even now America's big cities rely on ambitious foreigners to seek their fortunes here. America is more than a country, it's an idea - an idea of freedom. The nativists - formerly called the Know Nothings - would like to reverse centuries of history and make the New World more like the Old World.
Arizona's governor is claiming that illegal immigration is costing "billions" but that figure probably relies on fanciful accounting. I'll bet there aren't any hard figures anywhere, and even if there were, they wouldn't factor in the enormous contribution that foreigners make the America's gross national product. Frankly it sounds like political grandstanding to appeal to Arizona's cranky retirees.
It is not in America's interest to start rounding people up to throw them out. Foreign workers are far too valuable for that policy to have a positive effect on our economy.

The feds allow illegals to vote ? No wonder Arizona and other states are so upset ! When the director of Homeland Security was the Arizona Governor, she was highly critical of the Fed's refusing to secure the border - now she is just another pawn of Obama.

Monsoonman | Feb 13, 2011, 12:23 PM EST
The Tea Party coalesced around the fact that the politicians of the establishment ignore the American taxpaying citizens, that includes George Bush and the Republicans. Tea Party principles don't recognize party, but honor principles. McCain had ample opportunity to help with the border situation in Az. but did nothing. Only until his re-election was in jeopardy did he "talk" tough on immigration and states rights...Now he's morphing back to the greasy "maverick" that he really is.
dearlyinaz | Feb 13, 2011, 11:09 AM EST
Where were these Republican Tea Partiers when George Bush was president? Obama has doubled (or more) the number of Border Patrol agents in Arizona. South of Tucson, where I live, all roads and highways have Border Patrol checkpoints - kind of like the British used to have in Northern Ireland when I visited there in the 1980's. The border with Mexico cannot be totally blocked off because of mountains, valleys, and open desert, despite having thousands of Border Patrol agents and Nation Guard units. For an understanding of the scene in southern Arizona, read the tucsoncitizen.com. Some of the bloggers on this site actually live in the area and can provide an accurate picture of the situation.

SOME MODERN COUNTRIES THAT RECENTLY ENDED THEIR BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP POLICY: Ireland repealed in 2005. Canada in 2009. Australia in 2007. New Zealand repealed in 2006. France repealed in 1993. United Kingdom repealed in 1983. Portugal repealed in 1981. I just love politicians who take an oath to uphold the Constitution and the laws of the United States, all the while, knowingly and intentionally planning that they will not. They have an agenda. Additionally, the laws that they pass in the Senate and Congress, many of which, do not apply to them or the President............ They have placed themselves above the law and dumb Americans glorify them! I will not until there is true Equality.
maloney | Feb 13, 2011, 09:14 AM EST
Along with stopping illegals from destroying the country, we should put an immediate stop to anchor babies. After birth, send the whole bunch back where they belong. Legal or not at all.

its about time this liberal leftist hijacking of all things irish got some fair and balanced input. i am so tired of being called racist b/c i'm not for open borders. my dad came here LEGALLY, all these guys should too.
StokeyBob | Feb 11, 2011, 10:44 PM EST
I wish Governor Jan Brewer luck but the deck may be stacked. When I started looking into where the money was coming from to buy off the politicians and subvert the immigration laws of the world, I came across what may be the root of many of our problems. Fiat Money. No matter how much real money people can put together to build their countries the way they want there are those that can print up what ever it takes to get their way. Maybe this will help make the danger of fiat money clear. Imagine you and me are setting across from each other. We create enough money to represent all of the world's wealth. Each one of us has one SUPER Dollar in front of him. You own half of everything and so do I. I'm the government though. I get bribed into creating a Central Bank. You're not doing what I want you to be doing so I print up myself eight more SUPER Dollars to manipulate you with. All of a sudden your SUPER Dollar only represents one tenth of the wealth of the world! That isn't the only thing though. You need to get busy and get to work because YOU'VE BEEN STIFFED with the bill for the money I PRINTED UP to get YOU TO DO what I WANTED. That to me represents what has been happening to the economy, and us, and why so many of our occupations just can't keep up with the fake money presses. We are going to have to regain control of our government before we can regain control of our currency and regain control of our country.
