It's a sad day when a state has to sue the federal government in order to enforce the nations immigration laws. Arizonans have had it with the federal government telling them they have it all under control. Arizona is a main conduit for illegal drug smuggling and illegal aliens into our country. Peaceful neighborhoods find kidnap houses springing up in their midst. Ranchers are inundated with illegal trespassers who, if confronted can sue for harassment by immigration attorneys and some ranchers have been shot. The world is upside down in Arizona.

At a news conference in Phoenix, Governor Brewer said Arizona would counter sue the federal government for the right to police its border with Mexico. She called border security "by far the No. 1 issue" in Arizona. "Our citizens have lived with this dark cloud for too long," the Governor said. "It's time for the federal government to do its job and secure the border."

"Illegal immigration is costing us a billion dollars a year to maintain the level we're at, and the federal government sits by and does nothing," she said. "It's the federal government's responsibility to protect the public safety, health and welfare of the people of this country.

"Arizona did not ask for this fight with the federal government," Brewer said. "But now that we are in it, Arizona will not rest until our border is secured and federal immigration laws are enforced.". With grassroots support & donations from all over the U.S. Brewer says no taxpayer money will be spent on the court fight.

The Chief of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano has repeatedly said our borders are secure. However the boots on the ground in Arizona have a far different view. Local and state law enforcement/ government officials say the borders are as porous as a sieve under the feds policy, drugs and illegals come across at will.

We are either going to be a nation with borders and laws, or sink into being a hazy lawless territory where citizenship means nothing. Enough of the factions who are allowing us to be drowned in illegal immigration in exchange for cheap workers and assured democrat votes. Put the American citizens first: secure our borders and enforce the laws that are on the books.

You could do with a couple million of the funny looking little brown fellas yourself seano. See if you like them looking at your wife or daughters or granddaughters saying god only knows what since you don't understand their language.
What right does any person have to enter any country unlawfully? The USA has over 12,000,000 ILLEGALS who take good jobs from Americans for scab wages of their employer who also is in violation of federal law for hireing the ILLEGAL as well as his renter. By not fully enforce federal law on the ILLEGAL's employers & renters and not protecting the border fully, is President Obama putting the ILLEGALS ahead of Americans so that he can pick up the LATINO vote as the tax payer picks up the ILLEGALS tab? One nation has no homeless or ILLEGALS which is the Vatican.
Patriotic Arizona!! Brewer fails to see the difference between patriotism and jingoism as most of the right and obviously Ed Farnan.
The article puts responsibility for porous borders on republicans as well as democrats. The republicans like the cheap labor and the democrats like the fact that they will get an overwhelming batch of new democrat voters. The deck is stacked against the average American taxpayer/citizen by both parties, hence the birth of the Tea Party.
YEAH WELL AZ, IS GOING TO BE 1ST STATE OUT OF DEBT FROM *** ALL THE ** ILLEGALS WISH THEY WOULD LEAVE AND SUCK ALL YOU NAY SAYERS ECONOMY & STATE FUNDS WELFARE ETC: THEN DONT YOU CRY ABOUT IT,
Working people vote their own class interests unless they've been here long enough to have been taken in by Fox News' misrepresentations. The cartoon acknowledges that in its suggestion that if foreign workers were legalized they would vote Democratic. This is a candid admission that the push for an even more restrictive immigration policy is essentially political.

Right wingers have turned conservatism thar a ceann; that is, upside down. There's nothing conservative about using the law to change American customs. This country has always welcomed hard-working, honest people, and it has never insisted as a matter of law that people adopt its customs. There's no pressing need to do either of these things except, of course, the need to suppress the number of working class people who might vote their class interests.

Every time I see the Statue of Liberty I am reminded that America is as much an idea as it is a country. Democracy actually works here, and indeed this country is a beacon of freedom throughout the world. Not everyone who comes to New York is going to make it, but foreigners have been coming here for centuries.
At one time the Brits made English the official/only language of Ireland--but not their own country. Hard to find English spoken in some areas of Londonstan. Another thing I find curious is that the four border states(where the largest number of illegals reside)--CA, AZ, NM, and TX all have Republican governors. What happened to all those illegal Democrat voters--maybe they voted Republican--sheep in some other kind of clothing? Or maybe the employers who hire them, are supporters of the Republican Party, and know how "to get out the vote". As I said, it all seems curious.
Those people have earned the "moral right" to stay here Dennis? Aren't we supposed to be a nation of laws? What about those who have immigrated into our country legally & were granted US citizenship, how do they feel about that? The US needs to enforce its present laws on immigration and make a constitutional ammendment to make English the official and only language. We are getting like the Tower of Babbel & balkanized at the same time. Nations need glue to hold them together and language is that glue.
I agree with your comments. How did a conservative land in the midst of all those liberals? DennisQ must realize that there is, indeed, one law for every state; but that that law IS NOT BEING ENFORCED; and, please. do not cite New York as an example for anything dealing with morality.
If you remember your history classes, maloney, you'll recall that the Union as a whole is sovereign over the individual states. There's not going to be one policy for "patriotic" Arizona and a separate policy for presumably "unpatriotic" New York. There will be only one standard over all fifty states, whether that standard fits comfortably in some states more than in others.

Because New York depends on foreign workers there's a de facto amnesty for people whose right to stay here would be challenged in some other part of the country. If you want to take a look at New York's labor force, take the D train in the early morning hours. You will not hear English spoken except with a foreign accent. Those people have earned the moral right to stay in America because they work hard and stay out of trouble.

It's unwise to change national immigration policy simply to accommodate the cranky retirees who've moved to Arizona, large numbers of whom don't contribute anything useful themselves. What would you like to do, maloney? Will you empty the D train of good, hard-working foreigners simply to accommodate a few cranks? You're entitled to your opinion of course, but so far you haven't prevailed. Nor will you. Somos Nueva York, y asi tambien son los Irlandeses.
The Irish Central Picture for the story is Bull#@%*. Visitors to Arizona are very welcome. So are any immigrants that want to make it their home, like most countries just ask and fill out the paperwork...
I remember that old boring song Laura I think the song has materialised "beam me up scotty".
AZ is the LEAST Patriotic of all the United States - like the black sheep of the family, no punt intended!

Farnan spreading his doomsday scenario like a good teahadist. Scare the peanut gallery is his mantra.
