Gabby Giffords returns but Biden gaffe ruins the civility
By: Ed Farnan | Published Wednesday, August 24, 2011, 2:52 PM | Updated Friday, September 9, 2011, 10:32 PM

Reflecting an ugly partisan side, totally beneath the dignity of the office of Vice President, Joe Biden called fellow Americans terrorists. To compound the offensive name calling, it happened today, the day Congresswoman Gabby Giffords made her triumphant and miraculous return to Washington DC. Can it get any worse for the Vice President?
The Tucson shooting of Gabby Giffords and the killings of others, brought the nation together in a state of shock and mourning just a few short months ago. President Obama made a stirring speech from the University of Tucson and implored us to usher in a new era of civility, respect and understanding towards our fellow Americans.
What brought Vice President Bidens Tourette-like outburst? A group of lawmakers who were practicing their constitutional rights by trying to shape laws to reflect their beliefs and the beliefs of many millions of Americans who sent them to congress.
Simply put, these lawmakers are working hard to put the nation on a sound fiscal footing by controlling government spending to match what comes in, in other words balancing the books. For this, Vice President Biden called these courageous lawmakers and patriots, terrorists.
To myself and most sane Americans, terrorists fly fully loaded airplanes into occupied buildings, killing thousands. Terrorists strap bombs to children and release them to wander in crowded malls where they are remotely detonated, killing and maiming many. Terrorists saw the heads off of live captive Americans while they are on television pleading for their lives.
Americans practicing their civil liberties and working within the confines of the legislative process are not terrorists, Mr. Biden! They are your fellow Americans who deserve your respect and they deserve a full apology from you sir.
President Obama should explain to Vice president Biden what the meaning of civility is. Maybe the Vice president missed the Presidents stirring speech from Tucson.

Obama shouldnt let joe biden in front of a microphone without a teleprompter in front of him. He is like a box of chocolates, you never know what prevarication/inappropriate statement he will utter next. Of course biden has never been one to respect the truth in the first place.

What's too debate? REPUBLICANS/TEA BAGGERS ARE TERRORISTS. Let's treat them accordingly. Period.

With everthing looking real bad for President Obama and the Democrats in 2012, Biden will be asked not to run, inorder to let Hilliary Clinton become Obama's running mate.
Monsoonman | Aug 03, 2011, 12:27 PM EDT
Perhaps there should be an article on the history of Bidens so called gaffes? Starting from his latest, welcoming Gabby Giffords to the cracked skull club? Yes Joe is a real smart man, he will be the first to tell you.
Irishlassred | Aug 03, 2011, 11:38 AM EDT
@Monsoonman - I proudly voted for both President Obama and Joe Biden and I am NOT a fool. No one seems to remember the huge mess this country was in back in 08 - the end of the Bush years and the two unfunded wars, started by Bush, enriching his bank friends, on the backs of our small salaries and on and on. The country was in the tank and yes it's been 2.5 years but it was one helluva big hole to try and dig out of. Let's then turn to the "fools" who voted for the tea baggers who DID hold the country hostage. That is the definition of a terrorist. They were sent to congress to make changes but change is the result of compromise - not a stick in the eye and a knife in the back. The author of this article is wrong and what the President is presently doing wrong is not getting mad at these terrorists. Get mad already and don't blink!! Good for Joe Biden, I bet if his mom were still alive she'd have worse to say then just this.

Maloney since you bring up fred and fannie, do not forget the millions of "bonuses" that the ex-Clinton cabinet got as leaders of those unconstitutional institutions. They walked away just before the housing crisis, with money bulges in their pants.
maloney | Aug 02, 2011, 11:04 PM EDT
While claiming to protect Medicare obama cut 500 billion from it. Lives lost? The housing crisis caused by Fannie and Freddie led by Frank and Dodd. How many homeless? obamacare making deals with big pharma pricing many seniors out of their meds. Lives lost? Yes, 2012 can't get here soon enough.

Biden seriously insulted Al Quaeda when he compared the Tea Party to terrorists. Al Quaeda has demanded that the VP apologize immediately. See the BorowitzReport for the full story: "'I demand that the Vice President take back his offensive comment immediately,' Mr. al-Zawahiri said in the video, broadcast on Al-Jazeera. 'It has been very bad for our brand.'”
Monsoonman | Aug 02, 2011, 07:32 PM EDT
No, G*d save us from the easily led fools who voted for biden and obama. Because they are really the problem, the bidens and obamas are merely the symptoms.
sharlot | Aug 02, 2011, 07:25 PM EDT
God save us from both Obama and Biden!!

Holding our nation's economy hostage to protect the rich while demanding that the poor and middle classes contribute more sounds like terrorism to me. How many will starve or die for lack of medical care or be thrown out of their homes on to the streets because of the coming cuts. We have bargained with terrorists and it will cost lives. We were conned and we will have to live with our mistake until 2012.

I always thought that Biden was chosen VP to protect Obama from assination. A president Biden being more frightening than a president Obama.
maloney | Aug 02, 2011, 05:03 PM EDT
How insane is it when liberals/progressives call Repubs/conservatives/Tea Party terrorists when they won't call or say terrorist to or about the REAL terrorists who fly into buildings and blow themselves up in order to kill others. I wish Gabby well. Her shooter will spend time in a cumfy nut house then walk free thanks to liberal PC lawyers, judges and politicians like Joe Blow Biden.

Good for Joe, He is a real American and said it like it is, Who the hell wrote this stupid story?

Anybody who does not see the how this counry has been weakened financially by off-shore investors is not aware. Our Pharmaceutical Companies and Health Care Insurance companies are investor-driven and should be non-profits at best. We are the only country that does not have any checks and balances in terms of of our medical care and needs. Medicares Plan D is a White-Collar crime and our free-standing pharmacies are raising prices months (I have the print-outs from one to prove it and have told CMS about this. There are $310 deductibles as well as premiums and co-pays and level of Tiers to contend with. Generic drugs are not that much cheaper and give the free-standing pharmacies a higher profit-margin. So Terrorism is not just guns and murder, it is the gutting and over-powering of our financial security. We can take off our shoes at the airport, but it is a joke: we have no power over those who are controlling our finances. They are the True Terrorists who are ruining U.S.

francisquinn--'How did Joe Biden get this far?' If you believe words written about this Vice President, his national political career originated in Delaware when he sold his soul to the mafia. (Read, "I Heard You Paint Houses," by Charles Brandt). If there is any truth associated with this assertion, Biden, a man who rubbed shoulders with thugs and murderers, should be the very last person to be labeling honest, hard-working loyal patriotic Americans as terrorist.

gaffe "blunder," 1909, perhaps from Fr. gaffe "clumsy remark," originally "boat hook," from O.Fr. gaffe, from O.Prov. gaf, probably from W.Goth. *gafa "hook," from P.Gmc. *gafa. Sense connection is obscure. The gaff was also used to land big fish. Or it may derive from Brit. slang gaff "to cheat, trick" (1893); ...I see gaffe can be a hook used to yank someone off the stage.

Gabby is to be admired. When all was falling apart around her, she knew where SHE should be. Biden insert foot in mouth. Congress has shamed our name throughout the world with their antics. NOT FUNNY
GraydonWilson | Aug 02, 2011, 10:23 AM EDT
Since you're so interested in law, Ed, perhaps you should try actually reading the legal definition of "terrorist". You'll find it in the Federal Criminal Code at 18 U.S.C. § 2331. You'll find that the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003 matches it precisely.

How did Joe Biden get this far ? He sounds like such a jerk very often...he is an embarrassment to the D party..

The President has no civility towards American Conservatives. This was no gaffe by the VP but one of the talking points the democrats come up with. A few weeks back the talking point was to call the conservatives extremists. This is nothing short of Chicago politics at the national level.

I always remember this great exchange from the "West Wing": "You lied to me!" "I'm a politician, of course I lied to you."

welcaro | Aug 01, 2011, 10:20 PM EDT
I think Carroll Standard has no idea what he is talking about. The Tea Party has lost more members since the corporate sponsored House Freshmen were voted in than any group previously in such a short time. They lied to the people who voted them in by pretending to be grassroots candidates, when in fact they were bought and paid for by big business. In addition, Mr. Obama's remarks were meant for the Tea Party, whose insane doctrines and irresponsibility probably provoked the person who shot Gabrielle Giffords. The Tea Party doesn't care about the government budget, they care about preserving tax breaks for big business, which hasn't done a thing to help the economy. They stated their policies would create jobs - they haven't; they held the unemployed and their families hostage at Christmas time by preventing the Clinton era taxes to be reinstated - if the taxes were part of the deal, they would not vote for continued unemployment benefits; and now, they were trying to hold the poor, the elderly, and the sick hostage during these budget talks. They are terrorists. I agree with Biden.
