| Sarah McKinley |
There is nothing as strong or as ferocious as a Mother protecting her home and her children. Sarah McKinley proved this point New Years Eve in Blanchard Oklahoma, as she turned the tables on a knife wielding home invasion robber, shooting him dead in her living room.
The incident began at 2:00 PM, when two men started forcing their way through the newly widowed Mothers front door. McKinley grabbed her 3 month old and the phone to dial 911, she also barricaded the front door with furniture, desperately trying to keep the intruders out.
But unbeknownst to the intruders, Sarah also had a 12 gauge shotgun in the house which she kept for self protection and she knew how to use it. While on the phone to emergency services Sarah asked the dispatcher: I have 2 guns in my hand, is it OK to shoot the intruders if they enter my house? The dispatcher replied you must do whatever you need to do to defend your baby if they enter your home.
At that time while Sarah was on the phone, one of the intruders, Justin Martin, 24, finally broke through her front door, armed with knife in hand he came towards the Mother and infant. Sarah had no choice but to squeeze the trigger of the shotgun killing the man on the spot.

At the sound of the shotgun blast, the other assailant, 29 year old Dustin Stewart ran off , only to surrender to police hours later. He faces 1st degree murder charges in the death of his accomplice, since they were engaged in a violent felony when his friend was killed.
Evidently these two thieving drug addicts were aware that Sarahs husband, a lung cancer victim, had just passed away on Christmas day and they thought there would be drugs in Sarahs house. So they thought they could boldly force their way into the defenseless widowed Mothers home and steal any drugs in the premises. Only they know what else they planned on doing.
Sarah faces no criminal charges for defending herself, as it should be. In America the 2nd Amendment of the constitution gives you the right and ability to defend your home and property, with deadly force if necessary. This story also proves what a great equalizer possessing a firearm can be.
If this woman was unarmed, there is no telling what the outcome would have been to this story. Sarah and her baby could have been statistics in the drug and crime war that haunts America.
Sarah also illuminates why Americans are looking more and more towards their own home self defense in these days of calling 911 for help. When seconds count the police are only minutes away.
The main stream media is very reluctant to promote these kinds of stories of how law abiding Americans protect themselves, but they are quick to point out that gun crime and gun violence are rampant. The fact is that gun crime and gun violence are perpetrated by criminals, not the law abiding, gun owning American citizen.
Here's ABC News' report on the story:

Im opposed to the calls of most anti-gun lobbysts especially those who hype up tragic events like Newtown for self agendas especially Politicians. I dont believe this video helpful in any way for the fact you have 2 drug addicts with knives and a grieving distressed mother. I would say all 3 were not of sound mind at the time. If she knew how to handle this shotgun and went for the legs would have curtailed him .If he died that way Id understand. She went for the upper body which is for the kill.I do not believe to kill in self defense when other options are open. This is not respecting or taking responsibility for having a gun.

The right to defend yourself and the people in your home and yard is accepted in most rational States in the US. Killing to protect property, short of property vital to an invalid or something similar, is a state-by-state decision. Most states frown on people shooting someone to stop car theft, but shooting to stop car-jacking, especially if there are children in the car, is accepted. When you move to a new state, check on the rights regarding protecting property. Madeleine is absolutely correct. There should be no warning shot. (The lady's front door was her warning shot.) If someone breaks into your home, shoot to kill. And shoot again if he might still be alive. Then walk over and kick the gun out of his hand. Don't bend over to pick it up. While you must treat it like it's loaded, don't use it in lieu of your gun because you don't know if it's loaded or even works.

I have no problem with the lady shooting the dolt who broke into her home. Shooting another person is not an easy decision and firing a warning shot or an attempt to wound is not feasible and only works in movies.

Had a colt 45 about 90 years old(in perfect order)handed it to authorities during a firearm amnesty big mistake.
Monsoonman | Jan 09, 2012, 09:31 PM EST
Lad? You never told me you were firearm friendly (trained) Bravo! Do you have a weapon at home for personal defense?
cuddlybuddly | Jan 09, 2012, 02:42 PM EST
She is an inspiration to every one of us, NEVER trust anyone who breaks into your home with a Hunting knife...and boy I would have done the same thing any day of the week, God Help Her and her little baby, I'm so happy that She was able to protect herself and the child...it's a beautiful story!!!
Madeliene | Jan 08, 2012, 07:16 PM EST
warning shot my arse! Never point a weapon unless you intend to use it, the warning shot could have just gotten her and her child killed if the perps were armed. They wwere breaking into her HOME whee her CHILD wss come ON she is a smart feisty young woman and I am sorry she had to go through all that crap right after the loss of her husband, that girl can watch my back any time- some of you hell no!
seanomelbourne | Jan 08, 2012, 06:03 PM EST
Eire2009 as a trained gun user(military)you only pull a gun to kill.As far as making a better decision were you there? The perps may have returned fire and shot her. I believe gun control is lax in the USA but you picked the wrong event to make your point.
OldMariner | Jan 08, 2012, 11:29 AM EST
Another interesting aspect to this story is that the living intruder will face a first degree murder charge. This is a great law. I wonder how many other states allow for this?
hooligan6a | Jan 08, 2012, 10:41 AM EST
Eire2009, Have you ever been in a gun fight? I have. You never pull a weapon unless you intend to use it, if you use it, you always use it to kill. not a warning shot. or to wound. Only deadly force. If you fire a warning shot, the intruders next shot will be between your eyes. This is how you are trained in both, the military and the police. This is how you stay alive. You take out the perp. Then you and your baby can go on and live your life.

Lad! Will wonders never cease!...I'll have to check the river styxx too, it has probably frozen over.
seanomelbourne | Jan 07, 2012, 06:11 PM EST
It's not often I agree with Mman on gun laws, but in this case the lady is a heroine and the bad guys lost.
Monsoonman | Jan 07, 2012, 04:10 PM EST
But how would she know if those two thugs weren't armed with guns themselves and fired back at her, possibly killing her infant? She already extended them the courtesy of dialing 911 and barricading her door, they had enough missed opportunities.
Eire2009 | Jan 07, 2012, 03:13 PM EST
She did have a choice, though. She could have avoided bloodshed by firing a warning shot or two before attempting fatal shots. If people are going to be responsible and use gunsin this country they need to be educated to act more responsibly. The fact that she actually needed to call 911 to ask if it was okay to kill home intruders says it all: She was uneducated about her right to use.a gun. Instead of calling 911 she should have first fired a warning shot and those creeps would have run away. I agree she had a right to protect herself, but she could have made a better decision while doing it.

Forget the self important Michell and her delusions of importance. Sarah McKinley is the real deal. This is what the socialist of the Democratic Party will never understand. Not only the right to protect family and home, but the responsibility to do so.
seanomelbourne | Jan 06, 2012, 05:02 PM EST
mereflow a similar incident in the UK would not imprison the housewife. The police or the DPP would assess the situation and she most likely would not have to face a trial. The right to defend your home and family in such circumstances is fine in most countries of the world.
seanomelbourne | Jan 06, 2012, 04:58 PM EST
Happy new year ED. I beleive that the US gunlaws are to lax, tighter control is needed. Having a gun at home for protection is fine, the above story makes a compelling argument on that particular issue.

Never underestimate a mother protecting her child.
merefalow | Jan 06, 2012, 11:38 AM EST
brilliant,if it was uk she would be in prison and the accomplice would be getting counselling and loads of advice from a no win no fee lawyer.the people who sold the drugs to these two addicts are equally if not MORE guilty, and should get the same sentence when discovered,if they are ever discovered or even investigated guardie?
beodonne | Jan 05, 2012, 11:16 PM EST
Good for her.
DanCinTX | Jan 05, 2012, 09:25 PM EST
It's a shame that the young lady had to go through this in the first place. That said, a shotgun is the perfect choice of firearm for protecting one's house.
