Ripoff American Universities Deserve No Sympathy

Perhaps the only area in which America manages to exceed Ireland in terms of being a rip-off is in its education sector, which is one of the most prohibitively expensive in the world.

Going to university in America is a ferociously expensive endeavor. It’s almost beyond dispute that this situation leaves a lot to be desired. Education, as a catalyst for social progression, should be as open to the population as possible. This of course, would be achieved by charing as little as possible for tuition there, yet in America this obviously isn't the case.

Yet even when you’ve managed to get within the university system, by paying the massive six-digit tuition fees, extortion still abounds.

Having just had the not so distinct pleasure of spending four weeks in one of NYU’s two unair-conditioned dorms I've had a firsthand insight into the "ripoff" NYU culture which I'd heard so much about.

The first negative thing that struck me as a foreign student in an NYU dorm was the constant - seemingly unending - threats of "judicial consequences" for any actions which NYU frowned upon. Every comminuqué from NYU ends with a salutary reminder of just what you have to do to face the dreaded "judicial consequences". The threats are laughable, though.

A few weeks into my stay I lost my room key. I was told that the replacement fee would be $100. As this figure was wildly out of synch with my expectations I asked my friends if this were indeed the correct figure. Good thing I asked - the cost was $25. After three days of futile efforts to try resist paying the fee I finally tore down the A4 sign that showed the cost to be $25 for the key in question. Did I get an apology? Hardly; this could result in "judicial consequences" I was told.

Yet this was just one of many incidents.

The lower-end NYU dorms don't have air conditions or let you bring them in. When temperatures soar to triple digits, as they did this summer, that's pretty hard going. Yet imagine being asked to turn off your fans in the midst of a heatwave? That's precisely what happened:

During the heatwave an email from the Residence Hall Director implored residents to use their fans as little as possible, then went on to note that: "Portable A/C units are not allowed at Rubin (the dorm building). Our electrical system cannot handle the power levels these units require. Please be aware that having one is an actual policy violation.” Judicial consequences again, then. So much for concern!

There are plenty of other ways in which NYU seeks to make a dime at your naivete. The dining halls - which you're forced to use at least 7 times a week, if staying in NYU accommodation - close at 8PM weekdays and don't even open on weekends. Considering that you're forced into spending at least $70 a week on a meal plan, these hours couldn't be much more inconvenient. Consider finishing your internship at 6:30 then trying to commute home and rush over there in time. Trust me, it's not easy.

And what happens if you want to cancel the meal plan? You loose everything. Unspent money falls straight into the surely bountiful coffers of NYU. The whole place reeks of extortion and judicial consequences.

I'm sure - in fact I know - that NYU is a magnificent institution of learning. Yet however nice its campus, however great its teaching, and however stellar its research, the least it can do is to treat its paying students with respect and without constant threats of lawsuits for tearing down signs. That kind of business does nobody any favors.

Oh quit griping! Like you have such luxuries as air conditioning in Ireland. It's not that long ago that the Irish relied on turf fires to warm their entire houses. And anthing I ever needed in Ireland, I paid for through the nose. Ireland should have an institution like NYU.
NYC might be expensive for college people, but other parts of the USA aren't. (and you lose everything, not LOOSE everything.) :)
I totally agree with you on this and have been saying the same thing since I moved into summer housing! I was fortunate enough to get one of the rooms with air conditioning, but in the midst of the heat wave, when it was consistently in the triple-digits for days--NYU turned off my air, which I had paid hundreds extra for. And no, I won't be getting a refund for the extra money I paid for a/c that I could not use on those days. Likewise I have been rubbed the wrong way by all the threats of penalization and the ridiculously cold, sterile, institutional feel of every communication between the school and its students and housing residents. I can't imagine how anyone would ever feel comfortable enough to stay here for four years (or more!). Oh and, my air conditioner was turned off once again today. I had to buy three fans during the heat wave (guess I won't be reimbursed for that, either), and they're on full blast. They can kiss my you-know-what if they take any issue with how much energy I'm using, or they can opt to turn my air back on. I don't even know what the excuse could be today? There is no heat wave and thus no "requests from the city to lower energy usage"; no way to wave the potential of the city's energy grid over residents' heads. But excuse me for asking, I'm sure NYU has the common good at heart. *eyeroll* I would never, ever stay in NYU housing again. Other things I've noticed that have blown my mind are the absolutely terrible, early 20th-century plumbing that leaves my shower clogged and toilet gross, and the elevator that consistently takes ages to arrive. And despite these serious problems, the problem they choose to fix in the building this summer? Ripping up what to my eye is a perfectly fine floor in the LAUNDRY ROOM, where no one lives, and replacing it with a new one. WHAT?!
"judicial consequences"?! what a load of bs! at least you've learned your lesson. go somewhere that respects its students next time your stateside and you'll be grand.
nyu is notorious for being a rip off. a nephew studied there for a while two years ago and he said almost exactly the same thing. complete agree with DennisQ: air con's a necessity when temperatures in the city hit triple digits.
Air conditioning isn't a luxury anymore; it's a necessity. What's wrong with NYU that it fails to provide its students with an environment conducive to study? Money isn't the problem - they're going around buying up everything in sight. So why won't they do the right thing by their students?
I think you are getting your first taste as to who has to pay in a socialist utopia....this time the "somebody" happens to be you. "Somebody" has to pay for the staff, how much is that college president making and those tenured unionized professors? You say what!!!! Welcome to the real world, you just happened to get caught on the paying end of things.
You don't say whether you're matriculated at NYU or not. Since you're taking summer classes, it seems possible you're not. If that's the case, you're not using your leverage against NYU. You can get transfer credit from anywhere; you don't have to go to NYU. Lots of fine colleges want your money, and the RA's won't knock on your door to complain you're using too much electricity. Of course, if you're matriculated at NYU, you're still not using all the leverage you have.
Didn't it read "UCC Graduation Fee Quashed by CSN" or something to that effect? Glad to hear you've found more habitable digs anyway.
