| BNP's Nick Griffin |
Leader of the British National Party Nick Griffin is set to speak at University College Cork after reportedly accepting an invite from the Government and Politics Society to take part in a debate there.
The radical politician caused a stir this October after Trinity College Dublin effectively banned him from its campus after pressure groups including an anti-fascism campaign organization and a Jewish students' union mounted a high-profile campaign of opposition to the visit.
The surprise cancellation of the Trinity event sparked off a heated debate on the boundaries of freedom of speech in major Irish newspapers as well as as flourish of letters in the Irish Times, Ireland's paper of record.
Many have questioned whether the decision to cancel the event was really based on security, and argued that free speech demands that he be given a platform to air his views.
Fears reportedly ran high that Griffin was on a recruitment junket, and would try use the Trinity appearance as means of promoting the establishment of an Irish branch of the party.
Griffin is head of the British National Party (BNP), a far-right political entity that takes a tough, often racist, stance on radical Islam, immigration, and minorities.
The party emerged as a splinter group from the National Front in 1982 and restricted its membership to only "indigenous British" until 2010.
In the last British general election the party received under 2% of total votes, and is generally seen as extremist and racist.
Griffin himself has done little to downplay that image: he has a history of Holocaust denial (an "extremely profitable lie"), homophobia (gays are "revolting"), and a longstanding opposition to Islam.
He was arrested for suspected incitement to hatred for remarks he made about Muslims during a BBC documentary in 2004.
The Trinity debate which Griffin had been invited to take part in what entitled: "That This House Believes That Immigration Has Gone Too Far." He was to speak in favour of the motion.
The UCC society's decision to invite him to speak in Cork will foist the problem of how best to deal with Griffin and his radical views onto UCC's management and security, who will no doubt be less than pleased to find out that a potential public relations and security liability has landed in their back yard.
Trinity's handling of the event was less than graceful: the last minute cancellation did little to quell fears that the decision to ban Griffin was based on his political ideology rather than security.
The notorious David Irving, for whom Griffin once stewarded a Holocaust denial meeting, was the last speaker to fall foul of UCC's security ahead of an upcoming campus event.
Protesters opposed Irving's appearance on national television as well as his debate on campus, while a high profile march took place outside the college gates.
Judging by the protests that pre-empted his first possible appearance at Trinity, he can expect more of the same from UCC.

But you ARE a racist fool, borderboy. First, note your racist categorization of English people. Why all that hatred? And why don't you argue in ideas rather than in labels? "Little Englanders"--what does that mean? People who consider themselves English? So that's now a crime for idiots like you? Because you are a bigot and a moron, in a very long post you were not able to give ONE reason for your hatred of the United Kingdom Independence people. All you offer is empty abuse and insults e.g "Tory" "mavericks" "neo-liberal". Since I know Ireland, I know that's the standard of what passes for debate over there, but it won't work with American readers. That's why you're such a fool. And a liar too. The CSO figures I cited are of foreign adults. If they were children born in Ireland to foreign parents they wouldn't be counted as foreign. And I explicity said I was talking about foreign migrants, you dope, not about Irish people returning home. But you're probably right that there aren't 6000 job vacancies a month in Ireland. So why the hell are the foreign migrants being imported into Ireland? Why are Irish people forced to emigrate while your Irish capitalist Fianna Fail buddies import unlimited numbers of migrant workers each month? Answer that, you racist fool, 0r ask one of your gangster Fianna Fail friends to answer it for you, since you're unable to put two cogent sentences together.

If having the option of voting for a far right populist party of political misfits and Little Englanders is desirable, then the English are 'fortunate' indeed, by George. Fortunate in the same way that Americans now have the option of voting for Tea Party mavericks and madcaps. UKIP has attracted about 15% of the vote in extremely low turnout European Parliament elections which is surely a modest accomplishment in a country where Euro-scepticism is fed voraciously by Tory mass media lies, distortions and illusions of former Empire glory. UKIP has never managed to win even one of the 650 seats in the House of Commons. And before dismissing Irish voters (except yourself obviously) as 'Goofs', the jury is still out on the Euro which since its inception has certainly come under incessant hostility from neo-liberal commentators – the sort who vote for UKIP and Tea Party candidates. Only a fool would argue that enthusiastic EU membership hasn't been good for Ireland, north and south. Meanwhile, contrary to your insults directed at me, only an ignoramus would assume that the issuing of 6,000 PPS numbers means the arrival of that number of 'foreigners' to work. I can assure you that there are not 6,000 job vacancies a month in Ireland and even 'foreigners' do not migrate to endure hardship. The number of PPS numbers issued includes babies born in Ireland, Irish people returning to retire, those taking up temporary work and all the children and other non-working dependents of those actually coming to work here in jobs that local people cannot or will not perform. Given that we have a free movement of goods, services and people in the EU, it probably even includes a few UKIP voters from England. No doubt you'll put your own xenophobic spin on this, but you really should be careful of hurling insults such as 'racist fool' without looking in the mirror.

English people are fortunate in having a non-racist alternative to the British National Front. It's called the United Kingdom Independence Movement and their leader, a man called Farage, is very articulate in opposing the EU. The Irish in contrast have a worthless selection of political parties. I was in Ireland when they decided to drop the Irish pound and use the euro, and I can say there was absolutely no public debate about it. Guess they're sorry now! Goofs.

Sorry borderboy but the BNP elected councillors, London Assembly members and Members of the European Parliament - they are not an illegal organisation, although I disagree with their opinions on issues like the holocaust.

Borderboy--you really are an ignoramus, aren't you? 6,000 more foreigners registered for an Irish PPS number (rough equivalent of a US Soc Sec number) in the month of November alone. That's over 60,000 this year so far, meaning the total will be heading towards 70,000 for the year of 2011. As I've pointed out, that means over a thousand migrant workers streaming into Ireland EACH WEEK. So it's garbage for you to say "Ireland has mass emigration rather than 'Mass Immigration'". The fact is that Ireland has BOTH Mass Immigration and Mass Emigration. Masses of foreigners are flooding in, while masses of young Irish men and women are being exiled from the homeland of their ancestors.

Hey George, it's time to climb back into your time machine and come to 2011 where Ireland has mass emigration rather than 'Mass Immigration' (although I suppose the capital letters make it seem more threatening). No matter how you cap it up though, it's still smacks of racism!

These students trivialize the need to debate Mass Immigration by inviting this guy. He has nothing to offer. There are countless articulate people among the 70% of Irish who oppose Mass Immigration, if the students wanted a true debate they would have invited some of these.

This really has nothing to do with 'free speech'. Griffin is a revolting purveyor of lies in England; inviting him to Cork is but the latest example of the perennial and perverted notion that immature students are unique arbiters of civil liberties. Providing another platform for this crass publicity-seeking hate-monger encourages other homophobic holocaust deniers and anti-semites. Even goading us with the idea of an appearance in Cork perpetuates the myth that he might actually say something worth hearing. The Government and Politics Society of UCC would be better served by inviting those who actually have something to contribute to a debate on civil liberties and free speech about real issues. Maybe instead of listening to moronic and discredited BS on long-discredited notions that the Nazis were right, they should concentrate on issues such as the collapse of neo-liberalism and 'free market' capitalism. Tell them they are playing 'me too' with the Trinity College nincompoops who began this circus, just to shock their parents' generation.
