David Norris recording his own eulogy to be played at funeral

Here's a really weird story from Ireland to end the weekend with.

Senator David Norris, one of Ireland's most outspoken gay-rights activists, has said that not only has he planned out his own funeral, he's also started recording his own eulogy, to be played as his coffin is buried into the ground.

The eccentric Senator is mustering support through a vigorous PR and Facebook campaign to become Ireland's first openly gay President.

How this fits into that overall campaign is anyone's guess; it could just be a publicity stunt designed to attract the media's attention to his campaign for President, or else he could just genuinely be thinking morbidly ahead to his funeral arrangements at this stage in his life.

Like many Irish, I've got very mixed feelings about the Senator's campaign for President, after this episode even more so.

He, perhaps with some exaggerating from the media, is basing his campaign quite largely on the fact that he's openly gay, and the fact that if elected he would become Ireland's first openly gay President.

Make what you want of that - and most people will undoubtedly support that in much the same way as they supported Obama becoming America's first black President - but how much does, or should, a President's sexual persuasion have to do with his or her fitness for office? How central a role does it deserve in their manifesto?

The main question to be asked of David Norris, including by the media, is is he capable of being Ireland's main figurehead, of representing Ireland well abroad, and of conveying a generally positive image of the country, which is effectively what the role of President involves in Ireland.

I think that a man who's not only - by his own admission - 'meticulously' prepared his funeral, but is also in the process of recording his own funeral eulogy, isn't the sort of person you'd want instated as President of Antartica, never mind Ireland.

If Norris were elected President, though, his quirkiness, for want of a better word, would make him a fairly dramatic change from the previous two Presidents we've had.

Both current incumbent Mary McAleese and her predecessor Mary Robinson were from fairly conventional legal backgrounds and seem to have done a reasonably good job at representing Ireland as a country.

They did so in a quiet and conventional fashion, and no doubt do not have a pre-recorded mp3 of their own funeral eulogies hidden somewhere on their iPods (if Presidents have such things).

For that reason alone I'd be happier to see McAleese re-elected than Norris get the job, although given a provision in the Irish Constitution this is not in practice possible.

Norris would certainly be an 'interesting' choice of President, and I'm sure many would feel that he'd be a very good one, but the plain old vanilla Robinson/McAleese sounds better to me than having a guy who's planning his own funeral arrangements before he's even retired!

I can't wait to hear Norris' eulogy!
Hmm . . . What's the big deal about preparing your eulogy?
A drama queen is a drama queen. God forbid they leave this world without some ornate 'film noir' of their sojurn here and have folk reaching for a tissue. If Norris becomes President the Irish can expect an R.S.V.P. from The Vatican that His Holiness is otherways occupied on any Invite to visit the Country. Two old queens on the tarmac would nevertheless would be a hoot.
Ps...Mary Robinson was quirky, you don't remember what was considered the "greatest suicide note in history" http://www.hotpress.com/archive/2931410.html She was a Wood Quay protester, on the activist side of politics. Something akin to the Tara Protesters, stopping progress you would call it. She like David Norris had to change as she slipped into the Presidential role..A change David Norris will do admirably...
I think David would make a very good president, he is inclinded to go on about his being gay but for all that he is a very speaker and always prepared to stand up for the underdog. He is entertaining which is something we probably need right now. As our president does not have any real function in the running of the Country only to cost us pots of money and hop abroad every so often to let the world know that Ireland still exists that seems to be the main function of our President. I would not like to see Mary McAleese back again as she bores me rigid.
He's basing his campaign on the fact that he is an outstanding man of dignity and integrity who has served the Irish people for over 25 years... Mary McAleese did not refer NAMA, the Bank Guarantee to the Supreme Court and should have. Children of the Celtic tiger like yourself should learn a little of your own history, you sound like a tea partier... The Oireachtas debates are on line.. read them.. then you can possibly learn something about the people who's voices of reason were drowned in the madness that took place since 2001.. i'd guess you were about ten then ;) Mary McAleese got elected because her name was Mary, on Mary Robinson's back.. we need another Mary Robinson and David Norris is that person. Sure he's quirky but he's one of the most intelligent people in Ireland...
David Norris is one of the few great representatives of true civilisation that the corrupt and humiliated "republic" of Ireland can offer the world.
Some info from the US election. We don't have a Black man in the Senate, now. We also lost one woman in the outcome, overall. However, there was a record number of openly gay people elected this election. So much for equal representation in the government.
Here's a handy way to test if you're homophobic or racist: do you have a close friend who's gay or of another race? If not, there's actually quite a good chance you have a hang up. The language used in this article like "plain old vanilla" and "interesting" gives the game away and probably means this kid is just another embryonic middle-aged Irish conservative waiting to hatch. Norris hasn't made being gay his platform, he's pointed to his long public career. This writer probably can't see that.
David Norris is a great Presidential candidate, not because he is gay, not because he can be eccentric, but because he is a warm, intelligent, compassionate and caring statesman (certainly not taking anything away from 'the Marys'). Go for it, David. And bravo--I think a lot of us tell family what we want at our funerals but just don't get media attention for it!
Adios David. You've made a spectacle of yourself in your campy life. Please refrain from doing it after you've gone to your just reward!
Yes, he's drawing too much attention to himself. He should focus on the issues facing the country instead of the eulogy. He might indeed make a good president, but it appears he's not long for this world.
It is probably not a good idea to remind people you are only Mortal when standing for election, but I like the fact that he has made 'meticulous' arrangements. I can hear him sternly instructing the undertakers ... " Now be SURE to put me face-down in my coffin - just to confuse the worms! Ha! Ha!"
"I'd be happier to see McAleese re-elected". What a stuffy bland conservative is this columnist. I'm double his age, but far more radical. The young Irish deserve all they get if they can't muster a radical idea and if this jerk is an example of them. And of course he's as inaccurate and ill-informed as the rest of the IrishCentral jeunesse doree (not). O'Carroll makes the utterly stupid and ignorant claim that Norris "is basing (his campaign) very largely on the fact that he's openly gay". I'm following Norris' campaign, and even from a distance of 4000 miles I can see that O'Carroll's claim is garbage. It seems you don't have to be an uninformed dope to get a job posting on IrishCentral, but it helps.
