Time for the Irish to embrace Britain and not Boston or Berlin - Only the British have stood up for Ireland in these hard times

Enda Kenny and Queen Elizabeth
During the Irish boom years it was always painted as a simple choice. Did we want to be closer to Boston or Berlin? But while our ego fuelled an inflated sense of self-importance as we reveled in the fact that Project Ireland was at last an economic success, we failed to see what was staring us right in the face.

Now that reality has brought us crashing back down to earth it is time to forget Boston and Berlin, and start embracing the only country that can truly help us forge a solid economic future — Britain.

America is without question a true and best friend but ultimately will always look after its own interests, and rightly so. Then there are the boys from Berlin who have recently shown their true colours as they continue squeezing every last ounce of dignity from the Irish Government to ensure German banks stay afloat while the Irish people foot the bill. But while Europe twists the knife it is Britain that has rested a hand of friendship on our shoulders while our other European ‘friends’ desert us.

When the extent of Ireland’s financial crisis hit the headlines and Europe looked at how best to financially penalise the Irish people, the British parliament signed off on the Loans to Ireland Bill with little fuss. Meanwhile, as the IMF and EU handcuffed the Irish nation with astronomical debt, members of the European Parliament sniggered under their breath at the fact that Ireland, as they saw it, got what was coming to it.

Now that our true relationship with our European overlords is transparent, it is time that we saw sense and strengthened our ties with the UK.

The Queen’s visit last year was a huge turning point with regards to our modern day relationship with Britain. It allowed reconciliation with the past on both sides of the Irish Sea. However, most of all, it finally highlighted how our two sovereign states have more to benefit from by embracing each other rather than grasping onto the “us and them” mentality that for so long blighted our thinking when it came to Old Blighty or as some affectionately call it — the Mainland.

Prince William last week said that the visit “opened new doors” for the Queen and hailed it as a “huge turning point”.

Speaking as part of a BBC documentary he claimed the Queen’s enforced absence from Ireland due to the political tensions left her “like a child not allowed to go into a certain room.” It should be noted that it is Britain that is freely helping us pay the mortgage on that “room”.

Rumours are warming up again that another royal visit should be expected shortly, and this will further help cement the relationship between our two countries.

So, with our relationship with the UK stronger than ever, at last there can be open discussion about the possibility of joining the Commonwealth or ditching the Euro for Sterling, without cries of treason.

Indeed, the question is — why can proud, successful and powerful nations, such as Australia and Canada, have no problem when it comes to benefiting from the Commonwealth and the resulting deep economic ties with the UK while Ireland has for years balked at the very idea?

While we aspired to developing a Continental Café Culture during the Celtic tiger, the truth is we have always had more in common with our British neighbours. We speak their language, support their football teams, read their media, watch their television channels and hold many of their values.

Our relationship with the British has indeed suffered from bad PR over many decades. But the sign of a mature, confident Ireland would be to re-embrace Britain and pave the way for our two nations to truly thrive by closer economic and political ties.

The harsh economic reality has shown which nations we can rely on in times of crisis.

So as the Queen prepares to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee this year, it is time that we forged stronger ties with the UK.

Whether this is by joining the Commonwealth, adopting Sterling or some other form of economic co-operation, is for the people to decide. However, one thing is for sure — the ‘800 years of oppression’ chip on our shoulder needs to be brushed aside. In fact, it is time that we treasured and loved the British as much as they do us.

Really Portia, Micheal Collins. Cant we just watch the 4 hour movie! Didnt the British threaten Collins that if he didnt sign the deal that they would do the Oliver Cromwell thing on Ireland even if they are still in debt and broke from the first world war! Well?: (they were bluffing). Funny though, Northern Ireland Prods voted against Ireland joining the UK so Id say the Voting powers in the Commonwealth would be lobbied by those types which are common all through the Commonwealth. India joined back up as did many other ex colonies. Its a good thing to be part off because its not the Commonwealth of Nations. If you Host the Chogm thing you get a big event. The queen was rather popular last visit. Bygones be Bygones so to speak. Id say when the population bubble bursts in the North and they vote for United Ireland that for those prods that remain it would be a better transition if the whole of Ireland was in the Commonwealth the same way its in the EU. RIP Mick.
If Paul Allen's dream is an Ireland joining the commonwealth or ditching the euro for sterling he might want to read up on the life and times of Michael Collins.
Sorry Portia but Australia has over 70% of Citizens who own their part of Australia. Whats known as Crown land is only land that has no resources on it and is not being used for anything. Even National Parks are no longer crown land. The Australian Government only use the Royal's to drum up tourist dollars when they occasionally visit, which is all the Royals are, are franchise. Australia has an appointed Gov. General whom since the 'Australia Act' occasionally assents to a law or two but it is not necessary and does ceremonies like give soldiers medals at unpopular ceremonies for Wars we got involved with that are terribly unpopular, so be it. This is why we retain the Royal title for our armed forces, its part of the Grand Strategy of blame shifting which forms the back bone of all modern politics.
Queen’s enforced absence from Ireland due "...the political tensions left her “like a child not allowed to go into a certain room.” It should be noted that it is Britain that is freely helping us pay the mortgage on that “room”. What nonsense. Her majesty owns 6,600 million acres in 32 countries. In all countries owned by the crown, including Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, the governments of those countries don't own the land of the country but administer on behalf of its owner, HM Elizabeth II. That's a lot of rooms for the person of the Queen. The only major country in which ownership of land was clearly defined as belonging to the citizens who paid for it was the United States.
if the brits handed over the 6 counties to the 26 county state, then be prepared for an exodus from Ireland that will make the Famine look like a Sunday outing, most RC in the North prefer the queen's shilling, rather the german euro, I was in Paris last week talking to a prominent regional politician about the expulsion of the prods from the North/South for the creation of the Irish Catholic Free State, not surprising that there was little or no support from a Catholic France that allowed the RC church to enforce the mass expulsion of the Huguenots (prods) in the late 1600s from France. As these were from the predominately merchant & craftsman, he said they should have expelled the church instead, who will pay for the reunification of Ireland, certainly not the UK who will seek massive financial reparations, the EU or the US.

Embrace Britain? Are you nuts? You an't embrace when your being smothered, beaten and enslaved!
kiss me you fool
Considering the mess the country has descended into since 1922 when Ireland lost it sovereignty to a gang of sinister male virgins in Rome this is not a bad idea. In fact on the anniversary of 1916 a huge sign should be hung on the front of the GPO bearing the words: come back, all is forgiven!
Handing over the Six Counties, bailing out the banks when they were not required to do so and now this, Has Ireland lost its collective mind? Or was this piece of trash just a trial balloon just to check the response
The mans entitled to his ipinion and thats all it is.
Labhraionn na hEireannaigh an Bearla cinnte, ach labhraionn na hEireannaigh an Ghaeilge chomh maith. Sure, Irish people speak English, but Irish people speak Irish as well. And the people of Scotland (Alba) speak English, Lallans and Gaelic. The people of Wales speak English and Welsh. Some of the Cornish speak Cornish. Some of the Manx speak Manx Gaelic. So even the UK has native languages other than English. And Ireland/Eire has a language other than just English. It has the Irish form of Gaelic as well.
their. there what ever.
