Whether you’re visiting Limerick, studying in Limerick, or living in Limerick it’s safe to say that you’re probably familiar with the typical “tourist bucket list” of must-see places in the lovely Munster city with a poetic name. Most people will tell you not to miss the Angela’s Ashes Walking Tour, to check out the beautiful and historic St. Mary’s Cathedral, and to take a step back in time and visit the Jacobites and Williamites at King John’s Castle.
Don’t get me wrong, all these attractions are definitely worth seeing, but there may come a time when you need a break from learning about how terrible King John was to the Irish people when you’re already aware that he was a jerk to his own people during the Crusades (as Robin Hood’s Prince John of course). If this should happen, I am more than happy to announce I have a solution for you: Limerick City’s Milk Market.
I know this may not sound like much, but don’t let your skepticism get between you and a visit to the Milk Market. The Milk Market, what I like to fondly refer to as “Limerick’s Best Kept Secret”, is the greatest place to food shop in the city. Home to over fifty food and craft vendors, the Milk Market is my favorite must-see place in Limerick, as well as a place I visit religiously every Saturday for fresh meat, organic fruits and vegetables, and homemade treats galore.
Though all the vendors and shops are worth a look, I do have a favorite stand that I would be remiss if I didn’t mention: “The Green Apron”. Dwelling place of Ireland’s voted best raspberry jam, “The Green Apron” is a stand you don’t want to miss, and the highlight of my weekly Milk Market trips. The people (the family) who create the delicious jams, preserves, mustards, ketchups, and other wonderful spreads are the nicest people you will ever meet, and the owner, Theresa, became one of my first friends when I arrived in the city this fall (as well as someone who I can always count on for good advice). And for all you readers with a sweet tooth, “The Green Apron” features a mouth-wateringly good raspberry-chocolate jam that I have to stop myself from purchasing each week for fear of gaining entirely too much weight.
I guess what I’m trying to get at by giving you this example is, ever since I first stepped foot into the Milk Market, I was hooked. There is no place that you will find food of better quality, taste, and price in the city, or people with friendlier dispositions. The Milk Market truly is “Limerick’s Best Kept Secret”: a secret I couldn’t help but share with all of you.
