HI People!

Wait! Wait! Hold on! The reason you can’t slam the door on my face is that my foot is jammed there in the frame!

Jesus, I know you’re ticked off, but can you just hear me out for a second?

Yeah, I can see you’re still sore from my review of Celtic Thunder’s last album, It’s Entertainment. It probably wasn’t easy to read in print how the show “jumped the shark,” but could you blame me?

Trotting the preposterously talented men in that troupe out in Lounge Lizard suits and torturing them with the schlockiest tunes ever recorded in pop music was a mistake. Does the world REALLY need another version of Chicago’s “Hard to Say I’m Sorry” or Bryan Adams’ “(Everything I Do) I Do for You?”

I rest my case.

Well, if you’ll admit your mistake, I’ll admit mine. I thought and wrote at the time that you killed the show off, but then along comes Heritage, a stunning return to form.

Gone is the “gigolo hanging by the lamp post” vibe that was so cloying during the It’s Entertainment phase. In the new Heritage show, the lads come out onstage in plain clothes and sing their heart out on classic Irish tunes as Phil Coulter furiously conducts and coaxes interesting nuances from the songs you thought you knew so well.

I love the drama injected into “Black Is the Color!” It’s the first time I can remember the ballad getting a midtempo beat, and Ryan Kelly’s rakish delivery is stone cold genius.

I didn’t think anyone could touch the Irish Tenors’ version of “Just a Song at Twilight,” but Paul Byrom’s booming voice gives the Tenors a real run for their money!

Coulter’s “Gold and Silver Days” sounds fantastic, with new melodic nuances revealed within the creative harmonies of the troupe. And I love the southern fried treatment you give to “All God’s Creatures,” a favorite kiddie tune from this writer’s tattered youth.

The world doesn’t really need another version of “Galway Girl,” either, but fair play to you for shining the light on the work of alt-country underground great Steve Earle. He is a brilliant songwriter that deserves access to the PBS crowd that might not be familiar with his work. You did the same thing for Paul Brady in past shows, which is truly admirable.

Speaking of PBS, I caught the show over the weekend along with the rest of the world because the notion of me getting free advance CDs or tickets to your shows ever again is about as likely as Charlie Sheen opening up a successful preschool franchise.

I get how one bad review makes certain people forget who was the first person in the states to sing a show’s praises. You probably forcefully crossed me off the holiday card list, which probably explains why I never even heard about your Celtic Thunder Christmas CD until I logged onto iTunes this morning.

Ah, well. Don’t feel bad for me. I’ll just dry my tears in the taffeta dresses of Celtic Woman.

Oh, yeah. Burned that bridge, too. Never mind!

Anyway, you may never even dignify this apology with a response, but I’m making it anyway. Against my better judgment, I am a fan of these big glitzy Celtic shows in the beginning, and it just kills me to see a good idea drained dry of any artistry with each show.

On Heritage, you prove that there is still sweet cream left in the auld udder and for that, this reviewer humbly offers a belated standing ovation.
Bygones?

mike - this is the first column of yours that I've read; good job creating a witty, readable tone that seems more personable than absolutist. I'll look in again...
I thought I was seeing reruns of the Lawrence Welk show, with the sets and everything (It's Entertainment). I'm happy to see Heritage return them to their roots.
I love Celtic Thuner and their "Heritage" DVD is great!!!
You're a JERK!
I agreed with your evaluation of "It's Entertainment". That show was like watching a bad high school musical production and at the time I thought these guys had better not let Phil Coulter ruin their chances at having any sort of careers in music after Celtic Thunder. However, I think they must have gotten the message because "Heritage" seems very much like a direct response to the negative response they received for "It's Entertainment". I know there are "Thunderheads" who are so obsessed with these guys that they'd defend and fawn over them if they came out dressed in Sesame Street costumes singing Big Bird's greatest hits - but that doesn't make them right and it won't do a thing for the future careers of these very talented individuals.
Hey Farragher, when you're done blowing the entire band "Celtic Thunder" you may want to read irishgael's post, it's dead on. The Thunder did a version of "Whiskey in The Jar" that was passable but Phil Lynott's "Thin LIzzy" version is 10 times better.
I am a TRUE Thunderhead Call them what you will I am hooked I have seen every show been to as many concerts as I can and These guys are Talented True gentleman, I can not wait to get tickets to see them again this year Ryan,,George, Keith Damian Neil and Emmet Keep Up The Gr8 Work.... Is Ma Liam
thanks for admitting your first mistake--"It's Entertainment was a different take by Celtic Thunder. It appealed to a different audience. You're on the mark about "Heritage", though. It's their very best work, going back to the original premise. A wonderful take on the Celtic heritage so many of us claim!
I deplore the Celtic Thunder and Celtic Women shows. Despite their possibly being wonderful musicians; I fervently believe these groups are similiar to the boy bands in the states who are created by sycophant managers out to make a quick buck or Euro from a population that knows nothing of Irish music. As a fan and programmer of Irish music playing shows on radio in the US, I would prefer to hear Clannad, Altan, Dervish, the Chieftans, or for more progressive Celtic music like Kila, and individual singer songwriters like John Spillane, fiddlers like Dinny McLaughlin or all around fantastic musicians like Gerry O'Beirne. There are so many others who should be mentioned here too. I feel like the producers of Thunder and Women haver taken advantage of fairly well talented good looking people without a lot of recognition to make a fast buck/Euro off of them.
knew you'd come around!!
Hi. Everyone has opinions and is entitled to them and should be able to say what they are without being attacked. I am a Thunderhead and I will admit that I like some of their songs more than others which is perfectly natural! Everyone has different tastes in music and that is exactly what Celtic Thunder tries to do... to appeal to a lot of different people. I myself think Heritage is the best yet and I'm glad you like it too. :)
As a devout Thunderhead, We do accept your apology. I think you missed the concept of It's Entertainment but once you come to your senses, there is no turning back! Heritage is a brilliant cd and dvd! But then again so is everyone they have put out. Phil Coulter knows how to make magic and it shows in all their songs he has written or redone! Celtic Thunder is a fantastic mix of talent not to mention very good looking Irishmen and our Scotsman!
It amazes me that these guys are as popular as they are, and truly talented guys like the High Kings haven't received half the publicity or sales.
"(Everything I Do) I Do for You?" is, in my opinion, absolutely wonderful! I love it. I only find it a total shame that it was not included on the DVD as it was really the only truly good song in the whole show besides "Every Breath You Take" (which was ruined by having the blonde floozy in it) and "Doo Wacka Doo". "Hallelujah" was very good too. A couple of others were OK to passable and "Ireland's Call" was simply great as usual, of course. If you had chosen to bash "Bad Bad Leroy Brown" with more than the obtuse "gigolo hanging by the lamp post" dig, or had you criticized the inclusion of the blonde huzzy in the show, or had you deplored the constant cutting away from the lads' performances to show various audience shots, you would have had my total agreement. It is true that "It's Entertainment" is not even close to the "Heritage" standard. However, it is far from being as bad as your appraisal of it alleges.
