| Big boost for Barack Obama's campaign |
What debate? The poll that really matters was just released this morning and it makes for dramatic and welcome news for
President Barack Obama's administration.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the U.S. added 114,000 jobs in September, bringing the unemployment rate down to 7.8 percent - its first time below 8 percent this year and its lowest rate since
Obama took office.
Reaction at the
Romney camp will run like this: '
Mr President, you said you would being unemployment below 8%! Ah, heck...'
There was further news for the administration, too: numbers for July and August were revised upward to show 86,000 more jobs were created than previously reported.
This is only poll that matters. And the president who believes in the long game is clearly winning it.

Seano where do you see black and poverty in my post, where do you see a person is incapable to achieve because of race. You don't. I believe in free people. All people are endowed by their creator with skills and rights. The left, your ilk, tries to convince groups they are incapable of greatness. You give them crumbs and tell them that is the best they can do. Very sad.
seanomelb | Oct 10, 2012, 06:03 PM EDT
People are always free to improve themselves no one knows that better than myself. I am a product of poverty and now financially secure Briano. BTW A person does not have to be black to know poverty. maybe you should substitute "dependency" for "helping hand in improving peoples quality of life". The poverty in the Afro-American and Latino communities are an indictment of a failed system not of a failed ethnic group. BTW to accuse ethnic groups (or myself) of "aiming low" is either a cheap shot or a racist statement take your pick.
BrianO | Oct 10, 2012, 11:46 AM EDT
Seano its time for your medication. Again with the class warfare and jealousy to divide fellow citizens. Being American means you are not limited to your current situation. Free people are free to rise above, conquer, and achieve their goals. The short sighted mindset of dependency has destroyed the black family and has it's eye on everyone else. Dependency, sentencing many to lives of nothingness, really sad. Good work to you and yours seano, aim low and submit to government. I prefer to be free.
seanomelb | Oct 10, 2012, 02:48 AM EDT
ye of little faith ancakver if Australia can do it why not the richest country in the world. "beaten before you start" ancakver. Obama an do it if the party of no would act like American patriots. But they would rather wreck the economy for short term gain that is "get Obama at all costs" even if it means long dole queues. The GOP are traitors to the American middle class.
ancavker | Oct 09, 2012, 12:29 PM EDT
sean: Shows how little you know about the U.S. The unemployment rate is never going to get below 6% again.
ancavker | Oct 09, 2012, 10:40 AM EDT
seano check your facts, what are the net losses or gains in jobs? I believe obama has been in office for four years now plenty of time to fix problems if his way of doing things were feasable. Obama's way of running up debt with QE1,2,3, adding mandates, appointing czars to increase regulation only retards the capitalist engine that is America. This non recovery, recovery will limp along until the bills come due, then nosedive, unless someone provides the atmosphere of growth and discipline. Ford didn't take the bribe, Gm hasn't paid back the money to taxpayers so they are still in debt, past there means to repay. The car industry should brace themselves for stiff competition as the Japanese are back online post tsunami.
seanomelb | Oct 08, 2012, 07:06 PM EDT
Briano Bush left Obama a financial crisis and the unemployment rate soared..For the last two years 5million jobs have been created. He saved the car industry which the GOP vilified him for doing so. If Obama wins a second term the rate could very well be under 6% in 12 months. The GOP are shocked by the fall in the rate and all they can do is whine, just like howareya who is a failed democrat.
mairint | Oct 08, 2012, 05:41 PM EDT
Obama's bedtime fairy story. It was suddenly announced just after his disastrous failed debate...how convenient! We are not stupid enough to believe this.
Maggie47 | Oct 08, 2012, 04:55 PM EDT
Atlanta at 11.8% not to worry Obama will pay their mortgage
howareya | Oct 08, 2012, 04:24 PM EDT
Yep, they don't count the massive amounts of people that are working "part time" or have dropped off the unemployment rolls because they have exhausted their benefits. Just like they counted the number of illegals they deported twice! Just like they counted the number of "green" jobs they created by counting jobs that were already being done but now are considered "green." AND I am NOT a Republican. I am a registered life long Democrat and am changing my affiliation to Undeclared! Not crazy about Mitt but I would prefer to have someone in the White House that is successful in business than one who has no experience and has not helped the nation in the past 4 years but keeps blaming Bush. He had a lot to be blamed for but it is time to take responsibility! AND the things that really anger me...passing the Dream Act in his sneeky little way, bypassing Congress...doing the same when the Senate refused to confirm his nominations to the National Labor Relations Board, he proclaimed the Senate was in recess and appointed them on his own. Why are these issues not more of a concern to people???
BrianO | Oct 08, 2012, 01:45 PM EDT
seano -since the bush era, 7.8 was the highest the unemployment ever got during the bush era, 7.8 is the lowest the unemployment rate has been during the obama regime. There is a big difference. The man is a failure in helping America prosper, a success in weakening America for her enemies to attack.
ancavker | Oct 08, 2012, 12:00 PM EDT
Cahir: First of all 114k is a dismal number, we should be creating a minimum of 250k a month just to keep up with population growth. Second many of the jobs were part time. Third many of the full time jobs were in the low wage, no benefit service area. This is a dismal recovery; the facts are the facts.
BrianO | Oct 08, 2012, 08:53 AM EDT
Ah hollaback, someday I hope you achieve your dream of living in a total dictatorship, free from decisions or choices, but I would prefer it not be America. Maybe you could join forces with the CHE Galway crowd and hand over Ireland to the next castro, then Ireland would truly be free from freedom, and you could live in bondage, happy.
hollabackgurl | Oct 07, 2012, 10:28 PM EDT
Republicans make their desire for the nation to fail obvious if they don't pull the power levers.
seanomelb | Oct 07, 2012, 09:23 PM EDT
Who's cooking kaydog Sean Hannity!! that soup would be so thin even Romney could see through it.
kaydog1 | Oct 07, 2012, 11:27 AM EDT
No Cahir, what the Conservatives are going to think is this: "If adding 113,000 jobs in August dropped unemployment from 8.3% to 8.2%, then just exactly how does adding 114,000 jobs in Sept drop unemployment NOT to 8.1%, but somehow all the way down to 7.8%???? THAT is what we will be thinking. That and, "If unemployment has now dropped 0.4%, then why is it that the "U-6" value did not change at all?" Answers, anyone? Who would like a nice big steaming serving of "COOKED BOOKS"? How about you, Cahir?
olovely | Oct 06, 2012, 11:15 AM EDT
Only a Tea Party troll under a rock could think the latest jobs report isn't 'actual news' Nicopernicus (and to think you call yourself that, did you read it on a cereal box?)
eiriamach | Oct 06, 2012, 08:17 AM EDT
Good timing! And a nice follow-up to Cahir's last article, about magical thinking and the economy. That got me thinking about James Joyce, who gave the world Stephen Daedalus, a young man who tries to free himself from magical thinking. Joyce may have died feeling somewhat defeated, understanding the power of magical thinking to bewitch us and disappoint our too-great expectations: "The resurrection and the life. Once you are dead you are dead. That last day idea. Knocking them all up out of their graves. Come forth, Lazarus! And he came fifth and lost the job" ("Ulysses"). Romney is our latest self-appointed savior, promising to work a miracle. But the economy is coming back to life without miracles, one statistic at a time. The September jobs report "was preceded by other signs of growing economic strength, including a jump in consumer confidence, the strongest auto sales in four years, rallying stock prices and, at long last, a stabilization of housing prices" (NY Times 10/5).
Nicopernicus | Oct 06, 2012, 06:51 AM EDT
Anther article delivered by a Irish central that's displays a three fold intention not to delver actual news.
cillowen | Oct 05, 2012, 10:18 PM EDT
He said he had a plan that Repugs were eagerly trying to cripple at every turn and now the recovery credit due him is deemed a conspiracy by the hating crazed among us. A black/Irish man of achievement whose story will the equal of any president the us of a ever had over time.
EphraimKibbey | Oct 05, 2012, 09:05 PM EDT
The stock market is at its highest since the crash, so Wallstreet and millionaires/billionaires are doing fine. Corporations are sitting on the greatest supply of capital in decades so they are flush. Now if we can just jump start Main Street, OH YEA, thats what our President has been trying to do with the Republicans dragging their feet since 2009. They LIKE those big unemployment numbers. That is what they thought would get Romney elected. That's why they have given pink slips to over 700,000 Federal, State and Local government workers and teachers. Now they even want to lay off Big Bird! With friends like the GOP, America doesn't need enemies. It should be treasonous to put your party ahead of your oath to America. Shame on them!
EphraimKibbey | Oct 05, 2012, 08:53 PM EDT
Payroll numbers also increased so that adds another nail to the GOP coffin.
seanomelb | Oct 05, 2012, 06:56 PM EDT
The teabaggers had their moment in the sun at the debate, now it's back to reality.Obama administration created millions of jobs now they can say "we have the lowest unemployment rate since the bush era. The weeping and gnashing of republican teeth can be heard from Australia.
olovely | Oct 05, 2012, 05:59 PM EDT
What smells, PiperMac52, are the sour grapes that Republicans are unleashing each time they see their fortunes fade. The Tea Partiers are going conspiracy mad and blaming the US Bureau of Labor Statistics of being Marxists. Everyone they disagree with gets called that, but the facts don't lie.
olovely | Oct 05, 2012, 05:41 PM EDT
Now this just doesn't pass the smell test. In fact millions are no longer on the rolls as their unemployment has expired(my son included). They are no longer counted. I would love to know where these jobs are. I know many working two minimum wage jobs to survive. What jobs are available do not pay a living wage.
hollabackgurl | Oct 05, 2012, 05:04 PM EDT
Good news for the nation and Obama and Republicans can't stand it.
freebie28 | Oct 05, 2012, 04:42 PM EDT
Yeah, and we had a few showers yesterday also Cahir. Didn't add to any growth of my garden, but it was indeed, 'a little rain.' So, what's your point!
EphraimKibbey | Oct 05, 2012, 03:00 PM EDT
Seanmor - Remember how that last Republican administration ignored the info before 9/11, remember how they faked the Iraq weapons of mass destruction and remember how they sent our troops in there without proper equipment. Remember how they were quite willing to have UNENDING war. Now McCain wants boots on the ground in five more locations according to his speech at the RNC convention. Romney says he didn't thank the Vets in his speech there because you only mention things that ARE IMPORTANT. If veterans’ affairs are a concern of yours, you should stand by the party that shares your concern for veterans and is willing to fight for those who fought for us.
EphraimKibbey | Oct 05, 2012, 02:57 PM EDT
Seanmor - That is a good question about the Vets. I suggest that you ask the Republicans in the congress who voted AGAINST tax breaks for employers who hire Vets. How many more Vets would be employed if it had passed? How many ARE employed because of training they received from the New Veterans’ GI Bill thanks to Obama. How many are able to work because of increased spending in VA hospitals thanks to the DEMS? The New Republicans are great at starting wars and sending our most precious treasure, our kids, over there but they are not so good at looking after them when they return home especially if they come home injured. Remember this is not the GOP of old that was good at keeping us safe and looked after our warriors.
EphraimKibbey | Oct 05, 2012, 02:28 PM EDT
tom/peggy - to add to what olovely said, how can Obama reply to Mitt Romney when he shape-shifts out of everything he has been saying all year and starts agreeing with the President's policies. Note that most of what Magical Mitt the Mendaciuos said during the debate was taken back by his campaign the day after as just Ole Mitt misspeaking again. Its really tough being all things to all people and Mittens is not up to it.
hollabackgurl | Oct 05, 2012, 02:19 PM EDT
Republicans from day one, made it clear that they wanted the President to fail. They made it clear, from their voting records and actions, they wanted America to fail. They have not succeeded. They now make it clear, they will lie and obfuscate, to ensure Americans are made to feel bad about their country. Am I wrong? Is this not Treason or at least, a form of Sedition?
Dompedro | Oct 05, 2012, 01:20 PM EDT
how can the country produce less jobs thatn in either of the last two months (as Washington also reported this morning) and have the unemployment rate go down ???????
Fran Connor | Oct 05, 2012, 01:01 PM EDT
If Obama can get about ten million more people to give up looking for work, he'll get the unemployment rate down to six percent again.
MegK311 | Oct 05, 2012, 12:56 PM EDT
I find it hard to believe that those figures are accurate. Thousands of people have given up looking for work so these people are not counted in unemployment numbers. This week it was announced that the Campbell Soup plant is closing its doors and 1,000 will be out of work. The Comcast call center is also closing down here and there goes a few more hundred jobs. In this city many of the shopping centers have vacant stores. I will believe in the recovery when I see businesses open up instead of closing down. I also want to see Help Wanted signs. Sorry Obama you can't fool me.
Seanmor | Oct 05, 2012, 12:38 PM EDT
Having served in the marines, I'd like to know how many veterans are included among the 114,000 who recently found employmenm, and for that matter, how many of the 1½ million illegal aliens to whom Obama granted work permits are among ghe newly employed?
olovely | Oct 05, 2012, 12:27 PM EDT
Peggy/Tom, it's hard for Obama to answer for 'failed policies' if his polices aren't failing. This is proof his policies are working.
tom/peggy | Oct 05, 2012, 10:40 AM EDT
If Romney was using "Tricky Dick" tactics why didn't the President reply coherently? Instead he stuttered and stammered. It's tough speaking without a teleprompter. Did Univision use "Tricky Dick" tactics? Finally he's having to answer for his failed policies.
BrianO | Oct 05, 2012, 10:12 AM EDT
The U6 number of 14.7% is unchanged, the 7.8 is a manipulation of the statistic for those that understand the numbers. The u6 is the actual number of unemployed, the 7.8 can be changed by lowering the participation rate which unfortunately is the case, no more people are being hired just more giving up and not participating.
CelticQueenUSA | Oct 05, 2012, 09:54 AM EDT
Where was this info at the debate! Romney was a boor, obnoxious to name a few, plus good at Tricky Dick tactics.
olovely | Oct 05, 2012, 09:47 AM EDT
That's terrific news and adds even more energy to his reelection.
tom/peggy | Oct 05, 2012, 09:43 AM EDT
How many of the unemployed dropped out of the workforce in September? It's impossible for the unemployment rate to drop with a paltry 114,000 new jobs. When those who quit looking are included the rate is over 11%. The real President was on full display Wednesday evening and he was lost without his teleprompter.
