This illuminating exchange between Ruben Diaz, the most anti-gay Democratic senator in New York and journalist Steven Thrasher at the Village Voice has just been published:

All right, let me ask you about this. You believe marriage is between one man and one woman, yes?

Yes [laughing] So? Why are you asking me this? You know that, you know what I believe. Why are you calling me? Marriage is between a man and a woman.

But you yourself have been married twice, and are divorced.

Yes. So?

So do you believe it is alright to be divorced?

No. Divorce is wrong. Gay marriage is wrong.

You think you are wrong, then?

When I got divorced, I was wrong, yes. Why are you asking me this?

But you believe that gay marriage is wrong and divorce is wrong, but that you should be allowed to get divorced and remarried, and gay people shouldn't be able to marry at all.

When I got divorced, it was wrong, but marriage is between a man and a woman.

So is being divorced OK with your religion?

No, it is not OK. Gay marriage is still wrong. This is what I believe.

He's a do as I say not as I do hypocrite. He can 'sin' and have his two marriages and a divorce, but gays can not 'sin' or have even one marriage or divorce. He's the definition of a total hypocrite seeing the speck in his brothers eyes and not the beam in his own.
"How is Ruben Diaz a hypocrite?" It's a question of freedom. He's a hypocrite because NYS law allowed him to do something that he considers morally wrong--divorce. He also considers gay marriage morally wrong, but he will not vote to allow it for those who do not think it's immoral. The law left him free to sin. He should support a law that leaves others free to do something HE thinks is sinful as long as it does no harm to others.
How is Ruben a hypocrite. He stated that he believes in certain rules and came up short and asked for forgiveness from his God. He said that marriage was a high standard and that he failed. Ruben, Ruben, I've been thinking what a "queer world" this would be, if the moms and dads were all transported far beyond the Northern Sea.
Nauseating hypocrisy from Diaz. Give me my rights, give them nothing.
Am I shocked to learn that Democrat politicians can be hypocrites too? Mr. Diaz needs to broaden his understanding of civil rights. To paraphrase the words of a famous feminist, heterosexuals--their rights and nothing more; homosexuals--their rights and nothing less.... Now, are we all equal and no group has power to limit any other group's choices? Great! Is Mr. Diaz still a hypocrite? Yeah, I figured that! That's politics, ain't it; the Albany statehouse was not built for a gathering of saints.
Apples and oranges, get over it.
