| The Etch-A-Sketch candidate's now too hard to pin for Utah. |
Yesterday something extraordinary happened in Utah, a state that's not generally known for dramatic events. The Salt Lake Tribune, the state's largest paper, declined to endorse Mitt Romney, giving their nod instead to incumbent Barack Obama.
To put this in context, to give you a sense of the surprise this occasioned, this was rather like Soviet era Pravda failing to endorse the Politburos' pick; it was like L'Osservatore Romano taking issue with the Holy See.
It was unprecedented.
In Utah Mitt Romney is a known commodity, or rather he used to be, which was the paper's point in overlooking him this time it emerged.
'We have watched him morph into a friend of the far right, then tack toward the center with breathtaking aplomb,' the paper wrote. 'Through a pair of presidential debates, Romney’s domestic agenda remains bereft of detail and worthy of mistrust.'
'The president has earned a second term. Romney, in whatever guise, does not deserve a first,' they concluded.
Utah, as you know, is ground zero of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or the Mormons as they are known. But they simply don't like or trust this 'shape-shifting nominee.'
Before the nation embraces what Obama has called the 'sketchy deal' Romney is offering, which include more tax breaks for the wealthy that Romeny won't commit himself to paying for, voters need to ask themselves a simple question. It's a question the board at The Salt Like Tribune put like this: ‘Who is this guy, really, and what in the world does he truly believe?’
Utah is a dependably red state so the surprise of this non-endorsement for the GOP pick can not be underemphasized. There's little doubt that the Mormon Governor will carry the state so the decision by the board must truly rankle him.
How could this have happened?
It happened because the state that thought they knew him have finally decided they never knew him at all. 'Politicians routinely tailor their words to suit an audience. Romney, though, is shameless, lavishing vastly diverse audiences with words, any words, they would trade their votes to hear,' the paper wrote.
Shameless, pandering, opportunistic and quite simply unbelievable. They may still vote for him, but like the rest of the nation they no longer seem to know who they'll be voting for.

Shows that in America, Catholics can & do support Mr. Obama ind spite of the Vatican's invectives; many Protestants embrace the messages of Catholic Mr. Ryan & Mormon Mr. Romney, & in the center of Mormon population, an endorcement is given to Mr. obama. Both politics & religion have their place in American society & neither has yet overpowered the other. It is one more example of the checks & balances that keep America great. Let's hope that the country will rally around its working-together plurality rather than the devisive polarization.

You are such a hack, maybe you should mention that this paper endorsed Obama in 2008. Knowing that, this isn't such a shock. You are terrible at manufacturing controversy. Meanwhile. The Orlando Sentinel, which endorsed Obama in 2008, now says that it will endorse Romney in a very important swing state! That should be the news story Mr. Cahir, but I know you better than that, you hack.

Wow, in a state that is plus 42 percent for Romney, the editor of this paper must really be an infiltrator. It just goes to show that these radical nutcakes can pop up even in the most conservative places. I imagine that you will find that this endorsement for Obama carries precisely as much weight as it deserves.

Maybe they don't trust flip-flopping politicians from the hugely liberal state of Massachusetts. And since there can be no religious test for any public office in the US, his being Mormon meant nothing.

Well isn't that a real shocker being that they endorsed Obama in 2008! Where was your news on the Orlando Sentinel endorsing Romney or did I miss that one?

A little further googling to the online tribune opinion page, it reads much like Cahirs articles what a coincidence. the only thing lacking were the cheesy human interest stories Cahir writes to try to cover uo his prejudices. Maybe Cahir will be moving to Utah.

I googled salt lake tribune and andrew brietbart to see how his death was reported. the article was neutral enough but the comments went on and on from the left, real caring stuff, if you consider vile to be caring. So since I'm not from Nevada I'm going to take a leap and say that a liberal paper endorses aliberal candidate.

"I'm a politician, which makes me a liar and a cheat. When I'm not kissing babies, I'm stealing their lollipops" Obama promised to change the way things were done in Washington, knowing full well that it could not be done. He knew what people wanted to hear and he said it to get elected.

Not trusting who Mitt Romney is or what he stands for is a problem for Republicans and Democrats alike and has been for years, truth be told. He'll tell you what ever he thinks you want to hear. He's a Latter Day Trojan Horse.
