Mitt Romney doesn't know where all his foreign investments are
By: Cahir O'Doherty | Published Wednesday, July 11, 2012, 4:00 PM | Updated Wednesday, July 11, 2012, 4:00 PM
I'm honestly starting to wonder if Mitt Romney will concede the election before election night. Is he finally seeing what the nation sees? The negatives about him, as they in Washington, are so pronounced.
Yesterday, facing relentless criticism from the Obama camp about his offshore investments, Romney spluttered that they are managed by a blind trust and he has no knowledge of their whereabouts.
Really? If you owned untold millions in investments abroad wouldn't you want to know where they were and how they were performing? Wouldn't you want to have their telephone number at least so you could cal them up if you were feeling anxious?
Imagine being so mind numbingly rich that you don't even have to trouble yourself worrying with those details. No wonder Romney's own conservative chums winced so much when he was photographed jet-sking at his private summer mansion last week.
'I don’t manage them,' Romney told Radio Iowa's O. Kay Henderson, referring to his foreign investments. 'I don’t even know where they are. That trustee follows all U.S. laws. All the taxes are paid, as appropriate. All of them have been reported to the government. There’s nothing hidden there.'
Move along.
Except the portrait that's emerging of Romney is of a human weather vane who will turn with every political wind that blows. Another portrait is of a man so rich and so cossetted that he need never concern himself about where his untold millions are stuffed. Imagine being so rich you don't need wonder where the money that makes you rich actually is? This is the man who feels the pain of America's middle class?
Voters are unenthusiastic about him polls say, and he looks decidedly unenthusiastic himself. Even Republican House Speaker John Boehner said recently that voters 'probably aren’t going to fall in love' with him, adding that only 'some friends, relatives and Mormons' have his back.
Ouch.
I'm not even sure at this point why Mitt Romney wants to be president. I mean, I suppose for the access to all that power, that must be attractive to him, but when I look a him I still strongly get the feeling his heart just isn't in it.
Looking at him, I get the inescapable feeling that his best days are probably all behind him. Like a lot of men from his generation I believe he was probably happiest in the days when he could lead a bunch of bullying frat boys into the unpopular gay kids room and hold him down and humiliate him for life.
In those days you could do things like that safe in the knowledge that kind of treatment would never happen to you. In those days he was a king and he acted like one. I bet he misses those days.
Nowadays I get the feeling that what he really wants, at this stage in his life, is a jet ski vacation and some nice comfy slippers. He has that hangdog look that makes me think he's been put up to this presidential run against his will, he has that look even more than George W. Bush did.
That's why conservative outlets went nuts when those photographs of Romney on his jet ski looking like he was actually enjoying himself for once hit the web.
They told the truth about him, for once. The truth is he's happiest goofing off with his family. I wonder if he knows it himself? I really wonder if he'll throw in the towel before the election even starts?

Signing documents as CEO 2000-2002 is a reality you find hard to accept Michael and calling it a lie is stupid. The documents are visible proof.
BrianO | Jul 18, 2012, 11:09 AM EDT
@michael, No lying necessary in this Bain red herring, what the left constituets as a lie revolves around three signatures on deal for bain during the time span and SEC documents. The SEC documents were determined to be boiler plate sign off sheets, company produced, the other signatures on three deals were determined to be Romney's in the ending of deals started before the Olympics called him away. The other important fact the left leaves out is all these transactions were on private sector deals, Romney could have stayed on with bain and run the olymoics and joined the circus for that matter. As for the pranks, Romney refutes any gay bashing, admits to involvement in pranks in high school, the person in this reference is conveniently dead so no story coming from him him to deny or confirm story. The man's sister did say that her brother never would have gone along with the victimization story. But the left loves a good story, too bad he wasn't smoking weed, doing coke, harassing and bullying girls, during his college years noe that would make for a good story.
michaelidaho | Jul 17, 2012, 10:24 PM EDT
Seanomelb--He should not have lied about his involvement in Bain but in the big scheme of things it is pretty minor. Furthermore, I do not think we should be too concerned about some stupid college pranks he committed 40 years ago. What we should be concerned about is which candidate will implement policies that will get this economy going again and has a track record of getting things done. Obama has failed in this regard and Romney has proven he get things done - Olympics, Bain, and working with Democrats in liberal Massachusetts.
michaelidaho | Jul 17, 2012, 08:34 PM EDT
Seano you seem to be flaying about, where are some facts to back up your allegations?
seanomelb | Jul 17, 2012, 07:59 PM EDT
Romney lied about his involvement in Bain Michael and if you are in denial fair enough. He was a one term governor ,tried to take on Ted K and lost a twice failed GOP candidate for POTUS.I suppose stealing a patrolman's uniform and pulling up people pretending to be a cop was a hoot.I bet if a black from the wrong side of the track played a similar joke he would now be a felon and castigating gays was such good fun in college.Sending thousands of workers on the breadline is another one of his attributes.Obama saved the American economy from meltdown and had to make harsh decisions in doing so,the car industry for instance, which the good old GOP derided him for doing so.You can vote for whom you like Michael let's hope your reasoning is sound.
michaelidaho | Jul 17, 2012, 01:42 PM EDT
Come on Seanomelb, you can up with something a little more witty than that? I assume you are not in primary school. If you are, you can ignore the first question. If you are not, maybe you can clarify your original post with some attempt at a coherent argument. By the way, if you do not believe me about Obama's economic plan, just re-read his last four State of the Union speeches. And just for the record, I voted for him in 2008, but I will not be doing the same in 2012.
seanomelb | Jul 16, 2012, 11:13 PM EDT
michaelidaho you better leave those Idaho spuds alone there mashing your brain.
michaelidaho | Jul 16, 2012, 10:06 PM EDT
Cahir, Everybody tries to obtain the greatest return on their investments. Most people do it through legal means. Romney is no different than anybody else who stays within the law. This is a non-issue except for the blind knuckleheads who support Obama. Obama's economic plan for the past four years: extend unemployment, give more money to "education" so that more people can have useless degrees, and go further into debt "investing" in green energy. Oh yeah, I forgot, and insulate federal buildings.
BrianO | Jul 16, 2012, 08:25 PM EDT
Oh and as for being dumb (I'll assume you mean unintelligent) you could compare their school records to see who achieved higher marks. You could also see who was recruited by the private sector because of how they achieved.
BrianO | Jul 16, 2012, 08:22 PM EDT
A brick is solid and dependable, good to set a foundation with. Obama on the other hand, is anything but solid or forthright.
seanomelb | Jul 16, 2012, 08:13 PM EDT
You are right Briano it's not about Bain or sending jobs overseas or offshore accounts. Romney is just dumb with no vision for anyone but the rich.Obama should just state the obvious Romney is as thick as a brick.
BrianO | Jul 16, 2012, 11:11 AM EDT
Ephraim, lot of maybes in your post, Obama may be seven feet tall, I may like ABBA, any untruth can be speculated on. Don't worry when this conjecture runs its course and the truth comes out your bosses will set forth another deception, as long as your paycheck keeps coming I guess its alright.
BrianO | Jul 16, 2012, 01:44 AM EDT
Hard to be in control and save the Olympics at the same time, read the reporting of the story when it happened, if you are unwilling to be non partisan then that is disappointing.
seanomelb | Jul 16, 2012, 12:55 AM EDT
Briano 2000,2011 2012 still still the sole owner and CEO!!! and now you're almost a Birther now that's disappointing
BrianO | Jul 14, 2012, 09:09 PM EDT
Never a birther but always wondered why such an easy document to produce was so hard to obtain, the Hawaiian governor sealed his records and the copy produced was also a little sketchy. AS for Bain and the FELONY charge, another ends justify the means lie that is all too common for this Regime-**From CNN hardly a right wing tool**--[Registered Democrat and Bain official Steve Pagliuca] said "Mitt Romney left Bain Capital in February 1999 to run the Olympics and he has had absolutely no involvement with the management or investment activities of the firm or with any of its portfolio companies since the day of his departure." The three other sources were very consistent with that, Wolf. Now of the four sources, three of them are Democrats. Two of them are active Obama supporters in campaign 2012. They say they were all there at Bain at the time. They said Mitt Romney left pretty quickly. The deal with the Olympics was struck pretty quickly. They said we need you, we need you to come now and all four insisted he left in the middle of February 1999.”
seanomelb | Jul 14, 2012, 07:06 PM EDT
Briano his opponent for governor brought it up so did his opponents for the nomination and he side barred the issues. He's in the big league now and if he cannot prove he was not sole owner of Bain 2000-2002 or if he does not release his tax records he's in the pooh. Your GOP mob lambasted Obama over the birth certificate and that was OK! at least he proved he was correct.
BrianO | Jul 14, 2012, 04:27 PM EDT
Epraim your ilk survives on the laziness of your followers. Lying doesn't always mean telling untruths but also by omitting parts of the story to change its meaning. The re reporting of this ten year old story like it is new is one omission, the omission of the story having no merit is another. You may want to question the moral backing of your candidate that requires such fabrication or have no conscience and collect your paycheck.
EphraimKibbey | Jul 14, 2012, 03:29 PM EDT
Romney may not have just been one of the outsourcing pioneers, he may have been THE first. Mother Jones - the day before yesterday - Romney may have been the first outsourcer to China in 1998 when he was definitely there. He financed a Chinese company that made appliances for the American companies who let their American workers go.
EphraimKibbey | Jul 14, 2012, 03:25 PM EDT
He can't have it both ways. In sworn testimony at his residency hearing, he claimed he was a Mass. resident because he was part time at Bain, returned for Board Meeting, and pulled a $100,000 salary. He had filed his taxes in Utah and they made him pay the difference to Mass. since he was claiming residency there. It was only later that he decided it was more expedient to not have worked there during the outsourcing and claimed not to have worked for Bain in any way. Either he lied and perjured himself, lied on SEC paperwork, lied on 2007 and 2011 disclosure forms and/or lied to the American voters. He can't have this one both ways, just because he has a boatload of money. Either he worked for Bain after 1999 or he didn't. Since he is on official record with both conflicting stories, he lied in one of them. NO BIG SURPRISE - ITS WHAT HE DOES!

Seano I have more respect for you than to accuse you of being an ABBA fan, Dylan is predictable though, Always respected Dylans longevity and resume of hits. research the sec/Bain and you will find the press went through this ten years ago, that is if you are honest in researching the information.
seanomelb | Jul 13, 2012, 07:37 PM EDT
Briano I never said I was an ABBA fan i stated Money{r} was in a fit of mirth. I'm a Dylan man myself.AS for Gallagher I mistakenly thought you were referring to the British group Oasis (Noel Gallagher). If Money[r] left Bain in 1999 why did he sign off on the accounts in 2000, 2001,2002.If he was not a director in those years he committed security fraud and by his own admission(when campaigning) he claimed he took leave of absence whilst organizing the Olympic games. He flip flopped on abortion and healthcare. He just cannot be trusted.
BrianO | Jul 13, 2012, 04:51 PM EDT
Exerpt from Washigton post--The Pinocchio Test The Obama campaign is blowing smoke here.We realize that Bauer gets to the word “criminal” by mentioning “investigation,” but that distinction might be lost on most listeners. Meanwhile, the weight of evidence suggests that Romney did in fact end active management of Bain in 1999. He stated that in a federal disclosure form he signed, under threat of criminal penalties. He said he was a “former employee” in a state disclosure form. A state commission concluded 10 years ago that he did, indeed, leave Bain in 1999. Investors in Bain funds were told he was not part of the management team.

You'ld have to be on a rocky mountain high to have these as your top 3 but then again I wonder what want wrong with your love of america a love that was so strong, must run, run, run, run, runaway. linda did look nice in her tight jeans before she ballooned up. @BrianO - Are you sure about the photoshopping? I think his head is THAT BIG! Second place goes to John Denver and third to Linda Ronstadt. What can I say, the seventies were GREAT!

Haaaaaa, ABBA ephraim loosen up, do you listen to a little bay city rollers with that, Seano since the plane crash took the life of the great Ronnie Van Zant lynyrd skynyrd(I always spell it wrong) isn't the same but still a far step ahead of ABBA, And you call yourself an Irishman and don't know of Corks favorite son shameful. I'm sorry but I can't get past this ABBA thing, Ephraim with all the good music out there your favorite is a Swedish pop group, I haven't had such a chuckle in a long time. let me guess number two in the cd machine is Rubert Holmes, Haaaa, Haaa, Haaaaa, oops fell of my chair.

EphraimKibbey writes, "You would think that the GOP would have caught on to the fact that it is really hard to get away with a lie in the computer age but I guess it is hard to give up the habit." It's impossible to give up the habit if he is a compulsive liar, and I suspect he is. He has a different version of facts for each audience-- the SEC, the voters, the NAACP, etc. He does not seem to realize when he's been "caught" in a lie and just smiles that dopey smile when a reporter or interviewer tries to pin down what he said. He seems unconcerned about truth or accuracy, focused on manipulation-- symptoms of a compulsive disorder. I find the thought of having a compulsive liar in the Oval office dealing with foreign heads of state and directing the military a bit scary. Does anyone know any credentialed psychologists who'd take a look at some video of Romney's fanciful stories and attempt a diagnosis? I'm serious about this; we need a diagnosis of this guy!

I wonder what other interesting stuff is in Romney's tax returns and what other felony indictments may result from their investigation. "That's how they got Al Capone, you know!"
EphraimKibbey | Jul 12, 2012, 09:35 PM EDT
Thanks to some great investigative reporting, we now know that Mitt Romney has either lied on SEC filings by Bain Capital or lied on his Federal Disclosure statements in 2007 and in 2011. His disclosure statements say that he "RETIRED" from Bain in 1999 and had no responsibilities there after that. In 2002 at Romney's Mass. residency hearing, having been challenged by his opponent as a non-resident, he gave sworn testimony that he was only on a leave of absence from Bain while working on the Olympics and that he appeared at board meetings and was paid $100,000 a year as its CEO, President and main stockholder over and above his capital gains. He signed SEC documents all the way up to 2002 as its CEO including those in 2002 for the start up of 5 brand new companies. You would think that the GOP would have caught on to the fact that it is really hard to get away with a lie in the computer age but I guess it is hard to give up the habit.

@BrianO - I LOVE ABBA!!! My wife and I saw Mama Mia twice and Abba Gold has a permanent slot in my car's CD changer. You can knock Obama all you want but don't mess with my Music! @hollabackgurl - Mother Jones reported a week ago and The Boston Globe just confirmed today that Romney's signature is on Bain SEC filings as CEO as late as 2002, three years after he was theoretically gone. In one of Romney's speechs he says that he held the same job at Bain for 25 years. Bain started in 1977. Twenty five years later would be 2002 not 1999. Maybe Eric Holder will have something else to investigate. Oh Ron, your star seems to be rising faster yet!
BrianO | Jul 12, 2012, 04:13 PM EDT
Hollaback, ABBA really, try some old school tunes, loosen up with some Ramones, try some Gary US bonds, and maybe some South Side Johnny. Then you can try to enjoy yourself with some Leonayrd Skynard, Alman Brothers, Aerosnith, or maybe a little Bruce. Since this is Irish central you could try some Thin Lizzy, Hot House Flowers, or some Rory Gallagher, Of course these are oldies groups if you want some more current groups try some Dave Mattews, or heck even Taylor Swift is better than ABBA. Try a little good music maybe you will be less crabby, cheers and i hope you feel better.

Fair enough comment except for the jet-ski stuff. What is so ultra-elitist about jet-skiing? It's a middle class activity, like wind-surfing. Remember how the press skewered poor old Kerry for that? What matters is the set of policies the candidate brings and his record in office, not what he does in his spare time.
hollabackgurl | Jul 12, 2012, 11:49 AM EDT
1. Sarah Palin did say that proximity to Russia's tundra gave her foreign policy experience. 2. Your parties suck if you don't know Americans who love Abba. 3. Romney transferred his offshore company in Bermuda to his wife's trust one day before he was sworn in as governor of Massachusetts. But we don't know when if ever he actually left Bain Capital. If he didn't leave in 1999 he would be guilty of a federal felony by certifying on federal financial disclosure forms that he left active management of Bain Capital in February 1999. So much much about his wealth is unknown and hard to check, given that so many of his assets are held in foreign offshore accounts.
BrianO | Jul 12, 2012, 11:35 AM EDT
Where to start, 1. Tina Fey of saturday night live, comedienne, coined the phrase "I can see Russia from my house" 2. No one in America listens to ABBA. 3. Seeing a clip of how a "Blind trust" works you would think you would know how a Blind trust works and why they are set up, ie. they are set up to prevent conflicts in interest as the decisions on investments are made by a third party. 4. Thank you Seano again as I now know what a POTUS stands for, If you must bring on the race aspect of this, and you are from the left so you must, It is the man's destructive policies I object to, I would much rather have- Condy Rice, Alan west, Clarence Thomas, Walter Williams, Dr. Soul, Mr. Watts, as president , Thank you.
bogsidebunny | Jul 12, 2012, 03:08 AM EDT
Maybe Mitt doesn't, but anyone would be better than the current Socialist/Commie dude in the White House. Democrats are either morons or fellow commies to believe Obama's a straight shootin genuine person.
hollabackgurl | Jul 11, 2012, 09:58 PM EDT
In 2008 John McCain vetted Mitt Romney's taxes and dropped like a hot coal, picking Miss I Can See Russia From My House Sarah Palin instead. There's something in those taxes. Probably long term US tax avoidance, but we'll never know until he comes clean.
seanomelb | Jul 11, 2012, 06:52 PM EDT
As the sun sets and after a hard day on the campaign trail "MONEY[R] sits down to a warm glass of milk listening to his favourite ABBA vinyl 'MONEY MONEY MONEY" and thanking all those poor middle class republicans for subsidizing his low tax rate and his ultra high standard of living. Such is the price the middle class teaparty fools are paying because they just cannot stand a black POTUS how sad.
EphraimKibbey | Jul 11, 2012, 06:39 PM EDT
I saw an interesting clip of Romney yesterday from his time as Mass. Governer. He was explaining how a "Blind Trust" works. He said that it is not really all that blind as one personally sets up the rules under which the money is invested before hand. He obviously has some current control of it as he was able to transfer a Bermuda account to his wife's trust in time to keep it off his disclosure form. It seems politically naive of him not to have forseen the uproar over offshore accounts and repatriated his fortune before running for national office. Maybe he isn't really that interested in being President. Ron Paul has four of the five states needed to be nominated in Tampa and may get the fifth one Saturday. He also is suing the GOP to allow all delegates to vote their conscience on the first ballot. He has LOTS of shadow delegates that are theoretically supposed to vote for Romney on the first round. Is Romney a ruse to deflect attention for the real GOP nominee?
jamthecat | Jul 11, 2012, 05:44 PM EDT
What else would you expect from a sociopath whose sole interest is life is making himself as rich as he can? He has all the moral capacity of a snake, and voting for him means turning this country's progress as a decent nation back 100 years.

You can say what you will about Cahir and his motivations but that is simply a red herring. Ad hominem arguments are a waste of everyone's time.
I've worked with the Chamber of Commerce. I know what is in the hearts of many small to mid-size business owners, how success and wealth is often the driver, not the business or service itself. It is as Eriamach has correctly lableled it, "plutolatry" -- lovely word...
Freebie 28... Kleptocracy is a new word to you? seriously..?
Well, welcome to an ancient Irish tradition. A delight in language and words, their meanings and origins. It is a true hall mark of the Celtic inheritance. Eriamach provided a lovely little lesson on the origins of the word Plutocracy.
There is a good reason that Dante's work is considered classic. While the fantastic environments described in the Inferno grab the attention of the reader, the real message is revealed in the description of the people and the reasons both banal and compelling for which they inhabit the various circles of hell. "Plutolatory" is an issue in this election and it is not going to go away.
hollabackgurl | Jul 11, 2012, 02:28 PM EDT
Romney pays only 14% tax per year. That means he pays less tax than nurses, fire fighters and cops. Now he's running so that billionaire's like himself can pay even less tax to Uncle Sam. He's not just the 0.1%, he's the 0.0.0.6%.
Nicomax | Jul 11, 2012, 02:10 PM EDT
Not politically smart to have a bunch of foreign accounts when you are running for POTUS, but that said, the real point is that wealth is not the issue, but transparency and fair taxation of such wealth is. Mitt's papa was also quite wealthy when he ran for POTUS, but much more open as to his financial positions, and paid almost twice the % of taxes as his son does. Nuf sed!
tom/peggy | Jul 11, 2012, 01:52 PM EDT
Surely Cahir you do know that Romney's investment are in a blind trust. Are you suggesting he violate federal law and participate in how/where his investments are managed? Above all it is his money not the taxpayers. Will you be doing a column on where the Obama stimulus (taxpayer) money is being used, or how many foreign jobs have been created with the stimulus funds. I anxiously await that column.
eiriamach | Jul 11, 2012, 01:47 PM EDT
Thanks for your contribution to the wisdom of wealth, Freebie. The word 'plutolatry' is not new, however; it's old as the ancients. With millionaire Romney seeking power, I'd like to brush it off and ask what it means to worship wealth with our votes. From mythology, pagan and Christian, we have Dante's portrait of Plutus, ancient god of wealth, whose words open Dante's canto VII. As he approaches the over- populated fourth circle of Hell, Dante hears its guardian, Plutus: "'Papé Satàn, papé Satàn aleppe!' [a twist on 'Papa Santa,' or 'Holy Father/Pope'; many fourth circle inhabitants are churchmen], the voice of Plutus clucked these words at us." Dante's guide explains that just as God made light to spread equally over all, God created Fortune to distribute equally the riches of Plutus. But how? Kleptocracy--Fortune helps shift wealth from one to another nation and from one person to another, in continuous change. Just as in life we quarrel over whose money it is, the souls lost in Hell's fourth circle forever pummel each other with their enormous weights of treasure: "For all the gold that is or ever was beneath the moon won't buy a moment's rest for even one among these weary souls" [Mark Musa's trans. Dante's "Inferno"]. So maybe you can "take it with you," but you'll be taking it to hell with you. I don't worry about dying rich; the plutocrats/ kleptocrats will get it all!

Since we are being educated with 'new words' in today's discussion, I came across this wonderful new word (to me it was new) and thought, 'oh my gosh, what a great word to describe what our form of government has evolved into over the past 75 years. Forget those popular arguments appearing around the 'net' and IC--Democracy, Republic, Marxist State (the last one I just threw in to see if you're really paying attention). Here it is folks....The United States of America can now best be described as operating this nation via KLEPTOCRACY--World English Dictionary kleptocracy or cleptocracy (ˌklɛpˈtɒkrəsɪy— n , pl -cies Informal: A government where officials are politically corrupt and financially self-interested. Incidentally, this applies to ALL nations, worldwide.

Btw: why don't we talk about all the richy-rich film stars, celebrities, sports players, and fat-cat Union leaders who've been squandering money on luxury resorts and hotels with the dues paid by the rank-and-file? There were also lots of Democrats on the Forbes list of billionaires, too. I don't see any of them offering to fork over some extra money out of their own pockets to the Fed. govt. to help those less fortunate. I haven't seen Tom Cruise offer to take less money to make a film. He's just as greedy as the rest of them with his umpteen homes.

The Romney phenomenon has its own language, and I've decided it's time to use it. The reaction here against requiring Romney to disclose his accounts is called 'plutolatry' (ploo-TOL-a-tree), the mindless worship of wealth. Romney supporters are 'plutocrats,' who believe only the wealthy should rule. Romney himself is a 'plutogogue,' someone who persuades people to follow the lead of the wealthy. And if he wins the election, America will no longer be the land of democracy and democrats, but of plutocracy and plutocrats, ironically, because most Americans will be even more dirt-poor than we are now!

Hollaback tell me how many people have read the 2500 pages of the healthcare bill let alone try to understand it.

Studies show Americans hate the Health Care Bill until they actually read what's in it, then they love the Health Care Bill. Meanwhile Romney is asking Latinos to show their papers when he won't show his own. But people know that Bain was about enriching himself and his shareholders as they shipped US jobs to China.

I don't see any 'unsubstantiated vitriol' in this article. I just see two stung reactions that condemn the writer personally, but don't discuss a single thing he wrote.

Your opening words "I'm honestly starting to wonder" is as disingenuous an opening as I have read on Irish Central since its inception and wonder what prompts your vicious and unsubstantiated vitriol: two can wonder . . . .

Let's take this piece of trash article in reverse. Romney might be happiest with his family(as stated in article) oh my God Romney loves his family and enjoys family time, Un electable. Cahir supports obamas so hates Romney un electable. Romney has Blind trusts so as not to expose himself to conflict of interests and ethical questions as a governor and potential president. Doesn't Romney know you are suppose to use your power and position to make more money in office, ex. Hilliary clinton and the stock options, bill c whitewater, Obama and tony resco, bill ayers writing his successful book.
