Jan Brewer loses head over immigration tactics
By: Cahir O'Doherty | Published Thursday, September 2, 2010, 9:50 PM | Updated Friday, September 9, 2011, 9:48 PM
Jan Brewer, governor of Arizona, must enjoy a good ghost story.
I mean, she's certainly good at telling them. To defend her endorsement of the anti-immigrant SB-1070 bill Brewer told the press in July that 'law enforcement agencies have found bodies in the desert either buried or just lying out there that have been beheaded.'
Decapitated in the desert? Yikes, well, since you put it like that Jan.
'I believe today, that the majority of the illegal trespassers that are coming into the state of Arizona are under the direction and control of organized drug cartels and they are bringing drugs in,' Brewer said.
Apparently it's Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome in Arizona now, every single goddamn day.
But wait, didn't the Arizona Republic recently publish an exhaustive report that found that, according to statistics supplied by the
FBI and Arizona police agencies, crime in Arizona border towns has been 'essentially flat for the past decade.'
Woops.
Then last month the Pima County sheriff who patrols the territory and knows it better than anyone in
America reported that 'the border has never been more secure.'
Again, woops.
Why does this matter? It matters because fears of drug cartels and decapitations were the blocks that Brewer's SB-1070 law were built from. If those stories are false - and if South American drug cartels are not in fact chopping the heads of fair skinned citizens of Arizona every day - then Brewer's law is built on a fallacy.
Scary claims of violence gave us the SB-1070 bill and they also explain the American public's support for it. But if those scare tactics aren't true it starts to look like you've bought a bazooka to pluck a daisy. It starts to look like the powers that be talked up the threat to get a bill they liked.
No wonder the reporters in her home state are chasing her down corridors insisting she admit she was wrong about the non-existent beheadings. Horror tales like the one's she's been telling are bad for Arizona, bad for the state's tourism, bad for it's image and profoundly bad for the nations political climate too.
It's time for
Jan Brewer to tell the truth instead of run from it.

old is just a state of mind, & I don't. Disabled is only being able to last 1 hour instead of 4 or 5 a few years back
seanomelbourne | Sep 10, 2010, 01:36 AM EDT
what's old and disabled?
Monsoonman | Sep 10, 2010, 12:40 AM EDT
Saw a very interesting interview on the Greta van susteren show tonight. Two politicians from Rhode Island, one a democrat the other a republican, decided to travel to Arizona and see for themselves what the situation is. They sounded the alarm, Az. is in deep need of help, it is getting overrun by illegals and the feds are doing nothing but putting roadblocks in the way of the citizens. This is not a partisan thing or a racist issue it is the survival of our country.
seanomelbourne | Sep 08, 2010, 09:16 PM EDT
Grey! getting there, the cost of internet depends on the service you require I pay $50 a month-.N.C.Maloney at least they have good banjo players.

Hey seano...losing hair isn't one of my problems this go around but I'll admit to my own fair share of gray. By the way, how much does internet cost you down under? I'm in North Carolina, cable, 19.99 mo. They want more but I hit em up for old & disabled.
seanomelbourne | Sep 07, 2010, 11:37 PM EDT
If you open your eyes you will see I accepted Mmans word that the feds erected the road signs. MaryM232 offered innuendo and rumour and has yet to prove her case. You'll have to stop nitpicking or you will have no hair left.
maloney | Sep 07, 2010, 08:06 PM EDT
seano... you accuse poor Jan of lying about beheading & of putting up signs. Look below to MaryM232 for beheading proof & monsoonman for signs. Who is the liar? Now I know how to take your posts in the future. Just like obummer, full of it. Throw it out to see if it sticks. busted!!! Getting gray & senile.

It's not an anti-immigrant bill. It's an anti ILLEGAL alien bill. Obama is doing a lousy job protecting our borders, and he is not adhering to the US Immigration laws. Drugs, sexual slavery, etc. are all coming across our southern border.
rcrdskpr@aol.com | Sep 06, 2010, 02:20 PM EDT
gee, i guess thats why obama uses a teleprompter and biden doesnt. how about some of bidens big lies and one liner gaffes?

seanomelbourne | Sep 05, 2010, 07:21 PM EDT
I stand corrected on the roadside signage Monsoonman but that doe's not give Brewer a leave pass for fear mongering and lying. I still believe she lost her ear piece and was dumbfounded, she could not make a case without a prompt. I can see the new DEM campaign add already.

God bless MaryM232

What the media and illegal alien lobbyists don't want discussed is the fact that a month prior to Brewer making her statement, an Arizona sheriff in a town at the border did find the head of a man in Arizona. What's more, for the past four years, police in the southwestern US, and even up into Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois and other states have found beheaded corpses of men in apartments and houses later found to have been illegal aliens involved in the drug cartels. There are reports of mass beheadings just across the border in Mexico. Arizona police, most especially Sheriff Joe Arpaio have rescued illegal aliens held hostage by coyote smugglers, in drop houses. There have been high rates of killings, rapes, child molestations, kidnappings, burglaries, drug dealing by illegal aliens, and it's make life hell for citizens. Perhaps Cahir O'Doherty wants to embrace the third world lifestyle? If so, he's welcome to emigrate to Mexico, but he's not entitled to demand it be imposed on the US citizenry. seanomelbourne, Australia is an isolated land body, it doesn't have a Mexico attached to it, with it's criminal element pouring in, mores the pity. Perhaps you should demand your country open it's doors to a flood of Mexican illegals, there are tends of millions of them who would love to be a burden to you and your fellow taxpayers.
Monsoonman | Sep 05, 2010, 01:19 AM EDT
lad the signs were put up by the federal governments bureau of land management, has nothing to do with the state because it is feceral property. If the feds don't warn people of the danger and someone gets hurt there is legal liability...but nice try though to try to pin it on jan brewer. Why don't you live on the border in arizona and report in to us on how safe it is...
seanomelbourne | Sep 04, 2010, 08:47 PM EDT
Australia his hardly a small state(as big as mainland U.S.).Why is Sheriff Arapiao"s district the only district in Arizona to show an increase in law breaking. Why did Brewer lie about beheading's and when found out did not have the moral turpitude to face the press and resolve the matter.Of course Brewer is lining the highways with fear mongering signs, what else can she offer the people of AZ. She is morally bankrupt.

Hillary clinton is a corrupt liar, who looks the camera straight in the lens and prevaricates without blinking her eye. she and her husband are such practiced lars they would pass a lie detector test with ease. Sadly the only thing bill got caught on was the blue dress because there was hard fast evidence of his lies...When in reality he should have been impeached for such utter corruption, way beyond a lie about his affair with an intern....Yet you sheep drink his kool aid and sing the praises still.

Isn't our Secretary of State the same person who said she landed under fire in Bosnia?
Monsoonman | Sep 04, 2010, 12:51 PM EDT
Lad, I wonder how you would be if the federal government unleashed all of its lawyer hounds directly at you and your small state? Do you think you would be a bit preoccupied? Even the sheriff is getting sued by eric holders injustice department. In the meantime along interstate 8 in Arizona the federal government is posting signs warning motorists the area is dangerous and overrun with violent drug cartels...This is in my country and what does the federal government do to the state when it tries to protect itself? Sues them!!!If you think I am lying or stretching the truth or being a racist just look up on google a picture of the warning signs along interstate 8, then get back to us.
seanomelbourne | Sep 03, 2010, 11:49 PM EDT
Brewer has the courage of her convictions? Why doe's she avoid the press. The idiot secretary of state!!! A flower among thorns.
borefield | Sep 03, 2010, 09:13 PM EDT
Jan Brewer has the courage of her convictions and beliefs. I guess Cahir O'Doherty wouldn't recognise these attributes. We need to take back our country and people that want to come here and work and be part of this great country should try the legal route like many of us did.

patrick1945 | Sep 03, 2010, 05:46 PM EDT
What are your sources, I've seen reports that differ from yours. Why is the federal government putting up signs that it is unsafe for citizens to enter parts of the state. There would be no governor Brewer in the news and no SB-1070 if the federal government would enforce federal law already on the books. As for decapitated bodies look just across the border. If they find them there what's to keep them from finding them on this side of the border. And didn't you leave out the word "illegal" in your statement "Anti-emigration bill SB-1070".
jamieLM | Sep 03, 2010, 05:09 PM EDT
Ajreaper & James Murphy: The Irish of the 1840's weren't potential terrorists or involved in violent drug cartels. The problem with open borders in the SW is that the U.S. doesn't know who is coming into the country and what their agenda is. Not all, but some illegals have criminal backgrounds and commit violent crimes in the U.S. The U.S. has the right to identify who is trying to enter the country illegally and why. It's easy to say there isn't a problem when you don't live in Arizona, near the border. Even Obama knows there are problems because he authorized 1200 additional border patrol people. From 1940-1942 my grandfather patrolled the border on horseback as part of the 1st Cav. Div. out of Ft. Bliss and the men were "armed." Trying to keep illegals from entering the U.S is nothing new.
hollabackgurl | Sep 03, 2010, 03:00 PM EDT
No one is suggesting open borders, they're saying that Jan Brewer grossly overstated the threat to the citizens of Arizona and they want to know why she did.
Nicomax | Sep 03, 2010, 02:20 PM EDT
Oops! She is a dumb as she looks.
HopingBlindSee | Sep 03, 2010, 02:09 PM EDT
JamesMurphy, you my friend are suggesting open borders evertwhere? I would assume you have thought that through and understand the ramifications of such a policy. No? Well under that policy people would move from country to country, much like locusts, living off whatever the country "of the moment" had to offer. Once the resources of that country were depleted, the masses would mob=ve on to the next country. And so on, and so on, and so on. Anarchy would reign. Yep, sounds like a good plan. I'm in... NOT!

If you cross the Afghan border illegally, you get shot. If you cross the Saudi Arabian border illegally you will be jailed. If you cross the Mexican borders illegally you will jailed for two years. If you cross the Cuban border illegally you will be thrown into political prison to rot. If you cross the United States border illegally you get: 1 - A job 2 - A driver's license 3 - A Social Security card 4 - Welfare 5 - Food stamps 6 - Credit cards 7 - Subsidized rent or a loan to buy a house 8 - Free education 9 - Free health care 10 - A lobbyist in Washington 11 - Billions of dollars in public documents printed in your language 12 - Millions of servicemen and women who are willing to - and do - die for your right to the ways and means of our constitution 13 - And the right to carry the flag of your country - the one you walked out on - while you call America racist and protest that you don't get enough respect.

cahir.. another obummer lackey. The US govt. says 25% of illegals are caught crossing over border. Border patrol agents say 10%. A $1.00 per wet back bounty should slow down the flow.
tomgallagher | Sep 03, 2010, 01:01 PM EDT
They ought to try to illegally emigrate to any other foreign country and see what they get, China or Iran for example.
Ajreaper | Sep 03, 2010, 12:01 PM EDT
Dead on James- during the famine had Ireland not been an island I am very certain many would have survived had they simply been able to "walk" elsewhere to secure work and food to sustain themselves and their families with no regard for having the proper "paperwork".
JamesMurphy | Sep 03, 2010, 11:39 AM EDT
Clearly cool and clear heads don't reign where illegal immigration is concerned. Faced with not being able to feed my children, I too would cross any border to ensure they survived. We live in a world where goods and services move without hindrance globally. Why should people not be aforded the same freedom? Talk of violence as trotted about by the Arizona governor wannabe needs to be seen for what it is--political hyperbole.
PhlutiePhan | Sep 03, 2010, 11:21 AM EDT
Mr. O'D continues to be very biased in his assessment of right wing issues. It is very obvious that the Democrats want amnesty to produce more voters for the left wing agenda. The so-called priviledged people of Arizona are only in the "manipulative" cross hair of socialisst progress.
HopingBlindSee | Sep 03, 2010, 10:45 AM EDT
Hollabackgurl, the two are not mutually exclusive. Just because ALL crime might be down does NOT mean that a specific type of crime has decreased. Simple logic. Do me a favor, take a walk by yourself along the border. If you come back, let me know what you find...
hollabackgurl | Sep 03, 2010, 10:39 AM EDT
According to the FBI and Phoenix law enforcement, the crims stats for Arizona are at their lowest since 1983. That means the the threat of beheadings and drug cartels are non existent. That means SB-1070 was a massive political overreaction.
chesapeake | Sep 03, 2010, 10:37 AM EDT
I think that Ireland (or those pretending to speak for Ireland) should keep their damned noses out of Obama's backside long enough to realize that Arizona is not their concern. Suffice it to say that Ms Brewer - and several other States - will prevail over the Federal government in this matter.
Parents | Sep 03, 2010, 10:18 AM EDT
Arizona has every right to get a handle on immigration, as a matter of fact it is part of their jobs. Good for them, we should all be doing the same. It's just out of control, all that money spent on the borders and yet the state is still full of ilegals. What is the point? Why spend the money?
Monsoonman | Sep 03, 2010, 09:42 AM EDT
geesh dennis, christine roehmer, architect of obamas economic plan, in her swan song just called for more tax cuts and more govt. spending...I guess you have to say she is for the bush tax cuts, eh?
HopingBlindSee | Sep 03, 2010, 09:39 AM EDT
I have a couple problems with the assertions in this post. It is not inconsistent that the 'crime in Arizona border towns has been 'essentially flat for the past decade', while at the same time crime from illegal immigrants and drug cartel members could increase. It is also not inconsistent that 'the Pima County sheriff who patrols the territory and knows it better than anyone in America reported that 'the border has never been more secure', while Governor Brewer asserts a huge border control problem. Just because the border is more secure now than ever before does NOT necessarily mean that it is not still porous. What else did the sheriff say? And how do you explain the two walking bridges, currently unsecured, that traverse the river that seperates Mexico from the US? Illegal immigration is a huge problem, recognized by everyone in government - all major parties - as well as by most informed Americans. There is no denying that problem. Why else would some want "amnesty" while others want immigration law enforced? Let's at least be impartial when writing posts so everyone gets all the facts. There is nothing more empowering than the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth...
OHofmanndawg | Sep 03, 2010, 09:30 AM EDT
Cahir O'Doherty needs to haul his liberal arse to the Mexico border instead of cowardly hiding behind a computer in NY sending arrows at Arizona citizens who are fed up with 1000s of illegal Mexican nationals running roughshod over the state. Let O'Doherty buy a house there and see how he feels when the Mexicans trash his property, break into his house and/or steal his car or kill his dog.
joma5004 | Sep 03, 2010, 09:02 AM EDT

DennisQ | Sep 03, 2010, 01:28 AM EDT
Right wingers are never reluctant to tap into American fear of foreigners to discredit the opposition. Here's Monsoonman using ethnic stereotypes to characterize Energy Secretary Stephen Chu as "inscrutable" - and further diminish this man by dismissing his work as "mischief." I suspect that Monsoonman would prefer to call Dr. Chu a rabid Berkeley leftist - itself a stereotype - rather than identify specific policies he finds objectionable.
He does more or less the same thing to Dr. Christina Romer, calling her "infantile." Romer ran afoul of right wingers for supporting an end to the Bush tax cuts - which were supposed to stimulate the economy but didn't.
You don't expect people to openly use ethnic stereotypes on a website with an ethnic focus such as this one. What's next? Are Italian American politicians secretly Mafia thugs? Are Black politicians shiftless indolent darkies? And don't even ask about the Irish.
Monsoonman | Sep 02, 2010, 11:36 PM EDT
It is the democrat voting base. No more white guilt, time for the little social experiment to come to an end and let the adults be in charge....The infantile architect of the stimulus, christine roehmer has resigned and is moving back to berkeley, her job is done. We have another esteemed berkeley resident, the rabidly left inscruitable mr. chu, in charge of our so important department of energey, you can't believe the mischief he has been up to....It will take much longer to recover from the wounds of obama than it did to heal from carter.
