GOP: bash gays, forget economy

There's no need for the Republican party to focus on Americas economy; forget the threat of terrorism or rising education costs or the pain of high taxation.

Trust the GOP to know what's really important: gay marriage.

Soon they'll start every Congressional meeting by passing a gay marriage amendment.

Just look at Minnesota. They have already defined that marriage is between one man and one woman in a state statute, but this week their GOP controlled senate approved a ballot to allow voters to - you guessed it - constitutionally ban same sex marriage.

Who knew the land o'lakes was such a hot bed of sodomy? Who could have dreamed that the biggest threat now facing the state was the prospect of Adam and Steve shacking up together?

What this suggests to me is that the GOP is desperate, in panic mode in fact. This looks like a transparent political ploy, a big carrot if you will, to inspire the religious right to go to the polls in a desperate attempt to ensure Obama does not win Minnesota in 2012.

It's a pointless exercise, though, since eventually this - and all - anti-gay amendments will most likely be struck down on Fourteenth Amendment grounds.

But in the meantime gay bashing is still a handy vote getter for the GOP. And in the process we get to see who's putting hate to a vote. All those senators’ names will go on record and straight into the history books where they will be remembered for their crassness and their pathetic pandering.

How can we claim to stand against bullying and discrimination in the schoolyard when parents are doing it in the Congress and Senate? How many of us can still maintain that marriage is being “attacked” when our nearest neighbor Canada already has full gay marriage and no such onslaught has occurred?

Minnesota's neighboring state of Iowa already has marriage equality for gays and frankly not one heterosexual marriage can claim to have been affected by it. So it's quite clear that it's bias that's created this ballot.

I have friends in Minnesota and I have to say they're among the kindest, most tolerant and tough-minded people I have ever met. I’ve never met a Minnesotan I didn’t like.

I can't believe this just happened in their state.

Can you say civil union, marriage is a man and woman.
Don't worry be happy,be gay...........
The GOP always claims that it seeks smaller government. Yet it also wants the largest and most expensive Military, Corporate Welfare for Big Oil, and tax breaks, at everyone else's expense, for the wealthy. It also wants to deregulate everything, and allow all businesses to do pretty much what they want to do. However the GOP does warmly embrace the idea of Big Government when it comes to reproductive rights and gay marriage. They want to dictate what women do, or not do, with their own health, and they want to limit the kind of relationships gay men and women can legally have. GOP=hypocrisy.
SOS. Nothing has changed. Guns, God and Gays are their main concerns. Always have been and always will be.
Who cares what you think. Australians.
The GOP are more interested in the bedroom than the economy. They are anti Muslim anti gay anti abortion anti union and spend 100's of million dollars pursuing their "anti " objectives while America burns .They are a bunch of no gopers. A sad lot with an agenda of ignorance and spite.
@clancey4unc: I have reread your post.........it is just beyond stupid. " Do a man and a woman fit together sexually ?" Since when was love, affection and human sexuality reduced to piping or pluming ? Grow up.
The title should read "Bash Gays *Because of* the Economy." We're looking at long-term economic downturn with a "new normal" of high unemployment and low revenues for state and federal treasuries. There will not be enough taxes to pay for services for all who've paid into Social Security, Medicare, Unemployment Insurance, pensions, etc. unless we tax corporations. But the GOP is the corporation party, with a no-tax-increase strategy for dealing with economic woes: a "war on women's health care," disabling labor unions that keep workers in the middle class, depriving gays and lesbians of civil rights, and requiring senior citizens to support the insurance industry in order to have health care. No longer able to discriminate legally on the basis of race, they are creating a new underclass, a group that they can pass along the economic punches to. Does anyone remember the usual excuse for not hiring or promoting a woman? "She might get pregnant." If you remove reproductive health from insurance and Medicaid, then employers have the same old reasons not to hire women or pay them equally. Make it impossible for gays and lesbians to function as family units for financial planning, and they too are disadvantaged. Remove collective bargaining powers from the middle class, and watch families slide into poverty. A healthy 30-year-old might be able to afford health insurance, but a 75-year-old? Gay bashing? Right now, it's all about keeping the money in GOP hands. The video tells it.
clancy4unc: are you some kind of conjuror looking for a cheap trick ? or just a regular neanderthal bigot ? You got one thing right.....it's time for you to go......you are too closed minded and narrow without any openness of spirit......you don't belong to a changing society. stand not upon the order of your going; just go !
@Gearoid4 : Marriage as "commonly understood across centuries".......ha ha ha. Yeah, and the earth is flat, dude ! Now don't you go undermining that, dude.
@feeneycj : you are an idiot.
Here we go again......all the bigots get hard-ons with "the gay" discussion.....really pathetic. Frankly, I don't give a flying f**k what that one book creed menace says......there are lots of other equally absurd books. But your beloved bible expressly approves homosexuality in the love of David and Jonathan, which the bible states "passeth the love of women". Equally Ruth and Naomi state; "Entreat me not to leave thee; whither thou goest, I will go, where thou liest , I will lie.......". You little anti-christian bigots just want everyone to burn for their sins......Grow up you homo haters ! And f*** off from Irish sites.....we, Irish, don't want your bigoted ravings.
Religion should have nothing to do with this. How many religions are there in the world, and all thinking they are the true one. We are all brainwashed from an early age, where as it should be left to the individual when he or she is 18-21 to decide. Most gays are born this way, and have been there from day one on this earth. The words.." in gods image " we were all hair and tails, before religion got to us. Adam and Eve...well thats another .....
that is 'anti-gay bashing' and not 'anti-guy bashing'. Got it right eventually.
Typo error. I mean't 'anti-guy bashing' and not 'anti-guy bashing'.
