Like most people - possibly even the man himself - I don't think that Donald Trump will be the Republican candidate for President in 2012.
But that doesn't mean that I can't lament the abject buffoonery of the campaign he's decided to run. I'm not sure that his scatter shot accusations and allegations even deserve to be called a campaign.
Instead we should probably call it what it appears to be: a series of increasingly reckless dog whistles to the ultra-conservative, seemingly designed to create public stir - and possibly even incite some useful hatred? Would that be more accurate? And is that what must pass for a conservative political campaign nowadays?
Currently Trump's three main targets seem to be Muslims, gays and a Democratic president - all irresistible straw men to a certain mindset. To appeal to that mindset Trump says he has never seen the presidents birth announcement (which, by the way, also means Trump has never in his life performed a ten second Google search). Trump says Obama's hiding it (in fact, of course, he's not) because “it might say he’s Muslim."
It might also say Obama's a gay transgendered 500 year old Venusian who's arteries pump raw diesel instead of blood. It "might" say anything. That's how cynical and dangerous this idiotic conspiracy game is. But it doesn't stop there.
Trump says he also thinks there is a “Muslim problem” - oh, and a "gay problem," or rather a "gay distraction" (because gay's aren't important enough to be, you know, an actual problem).
But by pandering shamelessly to some of the most cretinous people in America, a tactic that even Bill O'Reilly believes Trump is pursuing, he's making the the GOP field look less like a serious challenge and more like a clown show, a sort of Death Match 2012 to discover who's the most reactionary conservative candidate, in the hope of boosting their standing with a deluded or demoralized base.
But why does a man who has apparently traded his own wives for newer models the way other men might replace aging motor vehicles believe he's an authority on marriage - and on who should not be allowed to get hitched? Trump has been married three times. By his own yardstick, he's been a failure.
And by suggesting the US and the entire world has a Muslim problem, whatever that's supposed to actually mean, Trump is maligning and tarring an entire international faith community, literally all of them, with one brush.
But the birther nonsense is Trump's most risible tactic of all, because the birther myth is a way to undermine and discredit without coming out and saying explicitly why. At its root the birther myth is about being ineligible: ineligible to govern, and ineligible to even run.
At its root it's also toxic racism: because the birther myth implies that this foreign, black, Muslim, un-American, lying Kenyan usurper has hoodwinked us all and he should not sit in the Oval Office, where his type most certainly do not belong.
Never mind that the president's birth certificate is a matter of public record in Hawaii. Never mind that you can read it yourself after a ten second Google search.
The birther myth is not about objective truth anyway, it's about metaphorical truth: it's about what is real but it should not be real. In that sense it's premise is utterly selfish, rather like something out of Lewis Carroll: if I don't accept him then he is not acceptable. No wonder it appeals so strongly to fundamentalists.
Of course there's a well-known word for a child who's origin is in doubt. Can it be very much longer before one of the increasingly lamentable lineup of 2012 Republican candidates decide to use it?

Go ahead laugh at Donald Trump, but I would take his experience in the real world over a union bought and paid for community organizer who has no life skills besides reading a teleprompter and knowing how to game the system by affirmative action gimmicks. Yes that's right, that's why he won't let you see any of his records or his wife Michelles either. Come on Obama unseal ALL of those records you have secreted away. Dare any of you lefties to stand for one second if it was candidate you didn't vote for, to have so may secrets. You'd all be apoplectic, suffering from southern belle syndrome reeling onto your fainting couches, I can see Cahir fannning himself feverishly. Hypocrites.

olovey - you do have a way with words. From the picture above, I thought "the Donald" had stuck his fingers in an outlet. LOL Trump has a huge ego, so I'm sure he thinks he should be elected POTUS. If elected, he'd change the name from the White House to the Trump House.

Trump is voicing opinions that are agreed with in a majority of the population.
He is only one of the excellant Tea Party Republican choices.
This is early in 2011. Many more Tea Party candidates are going to emerge.

@ DLW12183 posting at 9:34AM today... You are right, Obama could only have been elected by conspiracy. But what makes you so sure The Donald isn't a secret agent to reelect him?

Look up the phrase "arrogant idiot" and you'll see his picture as its illustration. This man has so much history as a spoiled rich brat of a weasel with a long list of financial troubles, he wouldn't even last till Super Tuesday. That anyone takes him seriously, let alone defends him, shows just how pathetic the political discourse has become in this country.

You really have to admire Trump's frugality. Even with all his great wealth, he still insists on cutting his own hair.

When my hair starts to look like that (above), I know it's time for a haircut. ImaOmalley, Obama has taken abuse non-stop since he started running for POTUS. Case in point: this matter of Obama not being born in the USA is so over and you yoyos on the right want to make something of nothing. Why? Because, despite the flaws of Obama, the Repubs will get creamed next POTUS election. You've got nobody. Karl Rove is even calling lunacy to question Obama's birth. Nevertheless, it is hoped that the birthers pursue this line of foolishness and that Michelle Bachmann gets the nomination. Trump is the publicity whore of publicity whores and he will not reveal his books and he will not get a haircut. In fact, the likelihood of a Trump run for the office of POTUS is as likely as him getting rid of the mop. Do yourself a favor and accept the fact that "birth controversy" is an invention of the right. Obama was born in America just like me.

Don't forget about the birth announcements in newspapers at the time. Oh, hey DLW12183, I would love to see a debate between Mr. Trump and President Obama (notice how the shift key works with the "o" on my keyboard). President Obama would eat the Donald's lunch just like he did the entire Republican leadership shortly after he took office.

Ok, people are really getting sick of the constant bashing of anyone that dissents ever so slightly from the super duper learned people on the left. In my opinion, he is asking perfectly legitimate questions. Even if we don't like them or don't like the answer to them.
Not to mention that this article actually gives a lot of lies at worst and ignorant mis-truths at best. Birth certificates are NOT public record in all states. I believe Obama was born here, HOWEVER I would still like him to release his actual birth certificate and stop using taxpayer money to fund his defense of this non issue. Unless he does in fact have SOMETHING to hide. What that is, if there, is anyones guess. But it does seem odd that he is spending so much money to hide. Not only with the birth cetificate, but also ALL of his other "RECORDS". But of course if you have questions and you have the gall to ask, you are: Racist, a bigot, homo-phobic, and islamophobic... But there is one clear thing we can get from the author... There is NO DOUBT which party he is towing the line for.
