Conservatives stunned by DADT repeal vote

After yesterday's vote to repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell in the Senate, some of America's most conservative voters were in a predictable melt down.

Over at Free Republic, a conservative website popular with Tea Party activists, the mood was souring and the mask was slipping:

"The issue of homosexuals in the military is part of the Marxist plan to destroy our society and our free nation. It will destroy our military, our defenses, our national security and eventually cost us our freedom!"

Meet your new homosexual overlords, I guess. I wonder what the mandatory reeducation camps will look like? I bet they'll be designed by Marc Jacobs and be really fabulous.

We can laugh - and we really should laugh - but the thing is, these people are serious. They really do fear that granting gay people equal rights (or any rights at all) will mean a reduction of their own.

Fear is at the root of their concerns. Fear for the nation, for the cultural fabric and fear for the future.

The Free Republic site, a ground zero of the right's culture war, is so fixated on the central planks of its fight that it helpfully lists them by name:  Pro-Life, Supreme Court, Global Warming, Obama, Aliens (Illegal Ones), and the Homosexual Agenda.

But the mood was so dark yesterday that posters were simply calling it the Faggot Agenda, without censure. And in the discussion threads the gloves were off:

"Absolutely NO room for Fag’s in foxholes! One of them might be allowed to give perverted blood in an emergency or worse."

Some had social concerns about how their obvious distaste for the repeal would play out at family gatherings this Christmas. Others were fairly salivating at the prospect:

"I have to spend the holidays with the in laws, one is a flaming militant gay. I won’t be holding any punches this year. The good news is I doubt they will be inviting me back…"

No kidding. Depressingly, quite a few envisaged committing acts of violence against gay troops:

"Having spent my life in the commercial construction business I have never seen or had to build anything that a queer designer came up with that wasn’t pure crap and ugly!!! I’ll kick the shit out of them before I give them the time of day!"

Another wrote:

"It is truly a revolting experience when a homo-sexual makes overtures towards me. If murder was legal, there would be a few more dead homosexuals."

Some were enthusiastically envisaging US troops killing gay soldiers:

"Did you hear?! That new gay guy must have fallen overboard 'cause he didn't show up for morning muster! Bless his little queer heart, he dropped a grenade in his own foxhole and couldn't get out fast enough. Queerest thing I've ever seen! He fell like a rock when his chute didn't open. Fags should really consider what they're getting themselves into if this BS passes. They haven't got a clue."

The level of over the top rhetoric was only matched by the sinister threats to gay troops:

"This is the darkest day in our history. This is truly a disaster. My heart goes out to the service men who will defend themselves from gang rape and go to prison for doing so. Fragging will be known as “fagging” . These sick perverts should be in jail not in the barracks. I am so sad for America. It will not be pretty."

Gang rape? Really? That's what going to happen now that DADT will be repealed?

Conservatives can claim they oppose the repeal for logistical reasons, for moral reasons, for religious reasons or political ones. But when the change they fear actually arrived yesterday it became quite clear that the source of their objections was contempt, not convictions.

I should probably note at this point that it seemed as many women as men were voicing their objections:

"I currently belong to an athletic club, and have had issues with dykes in there in the locker room: brushing against me for no damn good reason because there’s more than enough room to pass, checking me out in very obvious ways, one pretending to be texting but I THINK was taking my pic (fully clothed thank God) by the way she was holding her phone etc. I hesitated in sharing the above because it is quite personal but for some reason decided it should be shared. Now I’m picturing this kind of stuff being foisted on our military members against their will and I want to vomit like there’s no tomorrow."

You go right ahead, love. Get it all out, eh?

Another wrote: "I’m so tired of listening to apologists for these deviant people. I realize many people love their deviant family members but wrong IS wrong regardless."

Many people do love their deviant family members. Especially at this time of the year, when family gatherings bring us all together. But not the conservatives at Free Republic.

"Everything seems flat now," wrote one. "I am not interested Christmas, sports or anything."

Now might be the time to remind all these hyperventilating Chicken Little's that the sky is not falling, America's not collapsing and that Armageddon isn’t happening just yet.

How do I know this? Because gays have been serving in the US military for years, for centuries in fact. The only difference now is they don’t have to hide the fact they’re gay.

Hating them wasn't a good enough reason to deny them their rights. So welcome to their brave new world.  You have nothing to fear from it. Really.

Few people would point to the Puritans as admirable examples of a social accomplishment. Between burning women to death and hounding their neighbors they were more like the Taliban (which is why England and Scotland drove them out in the first place). They certainly weren't America's founding fathers and their joyless legacy continues only in pockets whereas the Constitution is the law of the land. DADT was repealed because of the Constitution (and despite, not because of the Puritan legacy).
One of the things that attracted the first European settlers to America was the right to practice their religion. The Pilgrims and Puritans were not atheists or non-religious and they were settled here long (100 yrs.) before the "founding fathers" drafted the Constitution. I guess it depends on your definition of "founded." It's the disagreement over the interpretation of Christian/Judeo beliefs (Bible/Torah) by the faithful that has helped to perpetuate this conflict over DADT.
I wish the right would stop repeating the nonsense that America was founded on Judeo Christian values, as if to repeat this false claim would make us start believing it. Crack open a history book or two Pacifist. America was founded by men who had democratic beliefs. That's why they drafted a Constiutuion, not a book of commandments. Many of them were non-religious or atheists.
There are a lot of conservatives worried about military morale these days. Where were they when Bush was starting these losing wars and committing troops to four and five tours? It's pretty demoralizing to fight a war that goes on year after year with nothing to show for it. But it's even worse when they pull you back from your well-earned rest to do another tour.

Conservatives are all about morale on one issue, but don't care about morale as it affects another - more important - issue. It suggests that their support for DADT isn't about morale at all. Having an exhausted military doesn't bother them, but they do indeed get exercised about sexual orientation.
The homophobes are bitter today, they can suck on DADT or jump up and down like naughty children, but at the end of the day justice was served
Murphy66 has about as much class as the Kardashian gals. He'd be perfect for their show
Rep Patrick Murphy spearheaded this repeal and he's the only congress member with active service experience in Iraq. He understood it was time to end the DADT nonsense and I'll take his word over McCain's because Murphy actually has experience in today's army.
They would never have gotten DADT repealed if that staunchly Conservative Republican Senator Larry "I have a Wide Stance" Craig were still in the Senate. He believed man-on-man sex should always be anonymous, discreet and confined to the Men's Room stall. LOL. Pathetic.
Cahir: Did you enlist today? I didn't think so. This whole debate reminds of the bruhaha about the GAA removing Rule 21 (banning RUC/PSNI officers and members of the british defense forces from playing GAA games). Rule 21 was abolished in 2001. Of course, you remember the spectacular point scored by a PSNI officer in Tyrone's great victory over Kerry in 2009. Oh, wait a minute, that was Brian Dooher, NEVERMIND.
DADT: A slow march toward tolerance, with side trips into total insanity.
It is quite obvious that, by the tone in many of the comments, that a large share of those commenting really don't have a reakistic grasp of the issues. DADT should be the order of the day Any other decision will have profound negative impacts upon the future of the military.
This is a bad sign. There are moral laws set by God for the protection of the family. Islam says that our society is decadent. Who can argue with them? Unless there are ideals for our republic, who will be willing to resist the predicted scourge of Fatima by radical Marxism.
gays served before and during DADT. so why the big deal? don't bring your sexual preferences to the workplace, PLEASE!!!!
Are these people real... especially the guy who is fantasising on the number of homo's trying to chat him up...
As long as people possess the capacity for absurd and uncontrollable paranoia there will be homophobia. It should be recalled that when President Truman intergrated the US Armed Forces that there were very similar lamentations and moronic predictions of doom issuing from The Fearful Right. Hopefully in due time, even the most ardently fearful Right-wingers will accept this vote for the wise and proper decision it is.
My parents found this debate quite amusing. Dad was a 20 year Air Force vet who served in WW2. There were always gays in the military. Everybody knew it and, in most cases knew which ones. The straight soldiers just kept their noses out of it and did their jobs. Glad to see that 6 Republicans joined the human race, even if for a day.
Members of my family have been in the U.S. military since the Am. Rev. and include career officers in every branch of the military. The ones in service today (including Afghanistan) consider themselves Moderates or Conservatives and think it's past time for DADT to be repealed and welcome the decision. I agree and think "life will go on" just like it did when they allowed blacks and women to serve alongside white men in the service. Americans can now focus on other issues.
DADT was an important issue to the tens of thousands of active duty soldiers who are gay and could lose their income over it (which also impacts our national job market). It may not have been a priority for you, but guess what you're not the only person in America. Now may not have been the time for you, but you had nothing to do with it.
American politicians have more important issues than this one...DADT wasn't a major problem and didn't need to be resolved over the ongoing economic crisis, troops fighting half way around the globe and terrorist threats. Seeing that about 5% of the U.S. population can serve openly in the miltary isn't a priority.
The GOP's election strategy for 2012 is the same as their 2008 one: insult and patronize minorities (and their defenders) in the hope that the majority will approve. Thing is, it's working less and less and they still keep at it.
You missed an important point about the depravity that currently exists in our military. It's NOT the gay troops that are sexually harassing and raping our female troops, an issue that is widespread and yet kept almost silent!
The cartoon above says it all. the bigots and their propaganda lies have been put back in their box.The tea party's choking on their tea leaves today. Flip flop McCain,Palin and the Fox homophobes have lost their bitter campaign to demonize gay service men and women. "None but the brave" regardless of their sexual orientation.
stunned is not a nice word, pshaw. let's all sit at home and fix our hair. what a cute outfit.
Learn a lesson grasshoppers, from the diminutive Chihuahua, a small subsect percentagewise in the dog world. The smaller they are, the louder and more ferocious they seem. A small but vocal minority is what sets the agenda of the country. Except in this case the "chihuahuas" are greatly aided and abetted by the megaphone of the main stream media.
wyocowboy, did you read your own post. You are worse than what you accuse the right of being. Try a bit of self awareness for goodness sake. What a pantload!
I grew up in that s#@t. It was HELL on earth...there is no freedom in religion...only repression. Its sad to see how pathetic, ignorant, homophobes they are. Right wing religion is the evils of all evils on earth...history shows it and I am not just talking about right wing x-tianity...ALL RELIGIONS!!!!!!! The religious (here I am talking about right wing x-tian's) groups call them the "REAL AMERICANS", what doe it mean to be a "REAL AMERICAN"??????? They do not have a clue. The right wing nuts need to get over their intolerance and get a LIFE!
Those poor pathetic homophobe losers. They should go out and thank a Gay US soldier for risking life and limb on the front lines protecting them and giving them the right and privilege to express their homophobic views. Freedom isn't free and ignorant bigotry isn't cool.
A new industry is opened up to American Trial Lawyers, LLC, Inc. So now the military(taxpayers) will be paying a lawyer tax on every bullet and missile, just like the healthcare industry has their built in lawyer VAT. Ever wonder why an aspirin costs 100.00 in the hospital? It has a lot to do with the lawyer tax built in. Of course no one mentions the fact this bill was rammed through by a lame duck session of congress, many of them were dead men walking after being fired by the American people. Just one more finger in the eye of mainstream America before they leave. They almost got their 1.1 trillion pork filled "omnibus" passed, but even some of them couldn't bear the stench so it was voted down.
Fortunately most military men, women and their families don't share your point of view. Actions against any other service man or woman will very likely be met with resistance for many of your own straight soldiers. Remember....over 75% of the military voted in favor of this action. You will find yourself in the minority with your hate agenda. Now you and your hate party will be discharged for your actions. Welcome to having the shoe on the other foot. You are a threat to company cohesion and team work.
At last, something you lefties can salvage out of Obama's Presidency. You can have the social issues for now, but the Independent vote swings on the economy. With ObamaCare in trouble in the courts, the legacy of the little "o" will be $8ooB in spending which stimulated nothing, unemployment rising from 8% to 10%. As Clinton's '92 campaign theme stressed: "it's the economy, STUPID!
