The Gay Mitchell campaign, Fine Gael's candidate for a run for the Irish presidency, ran into a serious snag this morning: a Facebook page opposing his run started in Ireland yesterday evening and has already attracted 715 members in its first 12 hours.
In these days of social media reflecting trends in the electorate, that's an awful lot of negative attention in a remarkably short time.
Claiming that he didn't want Gay Mitchell for president (or former Eurovision songbird Dana Rosemary Scallon, who is now rumored to be considering a run) one irate Facebook poster spoke of 'Dana with her twee 1960’s John Hind postcard Ireland with a priest behind every ditch. We are only getting away from that crowd in Rome who socially subjugated us for years and now these moral crusaders want to bring us back to the dark ages. 'Christian' and 'Democracy' do no belong in the same sentence!'
Other posters included links to article calling on Mitchell to fully explain why he wrote a letter seeking clemency for a double murderer.
Another poster wrote: 'Now that Senator David Norris was forced out of the Presidential race, this Gay Mitchell is a perfect example and definition of our Irish Government and how this country has always been run, run by crooked scum sucking ---------! This is what we have to look forward too, great!'
Looking for a quid pro quo for the recent public pillaring of David Norris, another poster wrote: 'Really a page should be set up demanding that all candidates dirty laundry get's the same going over as David Norris' has!'
But it was Micthell's close association with far right Christian evangelist leaders in the United States and his controversial decision to call for clemency for a man who murdered two people outside an abortion clinic in Florida that most incensed the posters to the new Facebook page.
It seems that the Pandoras box that Norris' opponents threw open may now have horrors to visit on every participant in the race.

Perhaps the application of a little logic/objectivity might distinguish the two cases...a few pwrtinent questions...Was Mr Mitchell in a relationship with Paul Hill...? Had the Court determined the matter of guilt/sentence...Is there scope for representaions to be made for Death Row prisoners...? What are the usual channels for making such representations...? Did Mr Mitchell comply with those procedures...?Did he lobby in his personal/official capacity...?I could go on but you get my point...Maybe a more detached approach would take some of the heat out of this in my opinion spurious comparison and quell the mob...I am not a follower of Mr Mitchell or his party...I am only interested in probity and accountability of those holding positions of influence in society....!

That sounds like very sour grapes there, lads. If it's disgraceful for Norris to plead clemency on behalf of someone who has committed a grave crime then it is equally disgraceful that Gay Mitchell pleaded for clemency for a man who murdered two innocent people.

all candidate deserve same scrutiny. I want to know about every letter Mitchell has sent seeking clemency. Since when is double murder less heinous than underage sex? Both are awful. At least in Norris's case, he was pleading on behalf of the love of his life. Mitchell was looking for clemency for someone he didn't even know.

Mea Culpa, correction to error in last comment. I mean't to say "on an accusation that is not related to the facts of the appeal".

Colkelly, you have effectively exposed the ignorant, illiterate rant mounted by Cahir against Mr Mitchell based on an accusation that is related to the facts of the appeal. If you are not part of the politically-correct, atheistic, liberal 'in crowd' in Irish society, you are treated as a leper

ColKelly, what a patronizing individual you are. First of all, Norris did not ask for the dismissal of the charges, like Mitchell, he asked for clemency.

It's up to 780 now I see. That's a lot of opposition, fast.

Cahir, when you grow up and get an education, please let me know. "Pillaring" is not a word in the English or Irish language. What you meant to say (if you had an education) was "pillorying" - since the stocks in which people were publicly vilified were called a "pillory," Incidentally, it is not pillorying to report that someone supported and continued in a relationship with a convicted child rapist. And the request for clemency was a request to change a death sentence to a sentence of life without parole, not a release - since you oppose the death penalty he should be your hero. Don't let intelligence get in the way or your uninformed rants, Cahir.

All truth on these pillars of society is being exposed. A lot more to come out in the wash.
