A fundamentalist Christian pastor in Florida recently burned a Koran to provoke Muslims around the globe. His cheap theatrics worked of course, leading to widespread violence and multiple murders, including the killings of UN staff last week.
And despite irrefutable evidence that his actions led to the unrest, the minister - Terry Jones - said this week that he was completely unrepentant.
In fact, he said, he was contemplating putting the Islamic prophet Mohammed "on trial" and then he vowed to lead an anti-Islam protest outside the biggest mosque in America.
The Koran, said Jones, incites violence. Apparently irony is not one of Jone's strong points. Neither are international relations or American foreign policy.
So the question seems to be: who's worse, our fundamentalists or theirs?
Perhaps Jones is anxious to see the Book of Revelations open. Many fundamentalist Christians do share that particular impatience. The temptation to help it along must be quite severe at times.
If you often feel disconnected from the wider world and most of the people you share it with, if in fact you never really cared for it at all - and if you're secretly anxious for the world to come - then perhaps the titanically stupid provocations of a man like Jones become a little easier to understand.
It's as old as history, this particular fundamentalist death match. And history shows us the same result whenever it erupts: death and darkness.
When the Christian hordes overran Alexandria in the fourth century they put the pagans who built it to the sword, they sent the Jews into exile and they turned that fabled city's centuries old library - one of the greatest centuries old repositories Hellenic knowledge in the known world - into a cow shed.
It took humanity twelve hundred years to climb out of the thick fundamentalist darkness that descended after that pointless conflict. Twelve hundred years.
The fundamentalist are at our gates again (both at home and abroad) and we owe them an answer, and it needs to be loud and clear. The sleep of reason brings forth monsters.

"So the question seems to be, who's worse, our fundamentalists or theirs?" -The shame is, Cahir is so morally stunted that he really can't seem to answer his own question. Fundamentalist Pastor Jones burnt a BOOK made of ink and paper. The Afghani Muslim Fundamentalist murderers who butchered the UN workers were thousands of miles away from this event which they never even witnessed, yet they felt completely justified in MURDERING the Muslim guards at the UN compound and non-Muslim UN staff there, just as they would have felt justified murdering any other innocent people ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD (including Ireland), because they were angry. These UN workers had no connection to the Koran-burning. Cahir can't see a problem with that, can't really figure out if one act is more loathsome than the other? It appears there really isn't much basis for discussion when our side is holding out for the rule of law, and Cahir's side is holding out for the right to commit whatever atrocities they wish upon us whenever they get angry. Then they expect us to honor and respect their "religion." Does it make me one of EIRAMACH'S "anti-Muslim ranters" to say that one should not waste time trying to negotiate with such creatures - their values are so far away from those of civilized people as to make it as though one were negotiating with rats or hyenas or other wild beasts. These are not civilized attitudes, these are not civilized behaviors, these are not civilized people.

Terry Jones is not truly a man of god, he's just another terrorist.
hancock | Apr 09, 2011, 07:18 PM EDT
Which Muslim country would that be?
eiriamach | Apr 09, 2011, 02:10 PM EDT
No, maloney, the anti-Muslim ranters cannot "shut up" anyone. As for the liberals, progressives, and others whose minds are open to facts: we value civil discourse and have gone in search of it elsewhere.
maloney | Apr 08, 2011, 07:01 PM EDT
Looks like the last 4 posts have shut the liberals up real quick. What's wrong, can't handle the truth?
hancock | Apr 05, 2011, 11:54 PM EDT
The funny part is they would kill these lefty morons on this site, who defend them, first.
Pittsburghkid | Apr 05, 2011, 11:45 PM EDT
I'm sick and tired of all this Muslim non-sense. America should stop travel between Muslim countries, and stop migration to American by Muslims. They are 1% of the American Population, and cause 90% of our problems.
FlashReader | Apr 05, 2011, 11:38 PM EDT
@ SingleDonald - Before volunteering to defend Islam, it would be wise to read the Qu'ran - the whole thing, not just part of it. 60 Miutes, like other MSM folks, broadcasts only what it wants you to see, the most "liberal" version possible. While the first few chapters of the Qu'ran says what 60 Minutes showed (At the beginning of the Qu'ran it calls Christians and Jews "Brothers of the Book". tWhat they didn't tell is "The Rest of the Story"). Further on in the Qu'ran it is made explicitly clear that the Jews and Christians are barbarian infidels. The later chapters of the Qu'ran specifically state they should be treated as enemies, their religions and governments destroyed. The Qu'ran also states that Muslims shouldn't lie to each other, but it is perfectly acceptable to lie to an enemy, even to go as far as "converting" to a different religion, as long as the lies help in overcoming the non-Islam Infidels And the Muslim stays "pure in his heart" as to his relationship with Allah. When it comes to women, an example is made when a Muslim woman brought a complaint against her Muslim husband and submitted it for adjudication - her complaint basically boiled down to her husband didn't care for her as he should and she was a victim of marital rape. The answer from the Imams, directly from Allah, was that it had long been held that another cannot dictate to a man how to "plow his fields". If you can defend those and other things in the Qu'ran, your understanding of that hateful book is completely different than mine.

OH yes there is a Devil & he's alive along with his black suited helpers and he lives in the Vatican living like a Royal King with all his stolen Gold & Jewels from past wars. He sits on his Throne Eating the Best Foods of the world while the poor are starving if he really cared for the poor he would sell all those Pagan Statues and the Vatican with all its rich glitter,Its all a Sham!!!Wake up People ! time to cut off the funds for the Devils
walkingmiracle | Apr 05, 2011, 10:07 AM EDT
This man is the one insiting violence ...funny we never hear of yashuah putting down someone else. Maybe someone should ship him to Iraq or Iran or Afganistan.
olovely | Apr 05, 2011, 09:21 AM EDT
Right bogsidebunny. Tomorrow I'm going to set fire to a tricolor and an American flag. There's nothing whatsoever provocative or insulting about deciding to commit those acts. If people get annoyed by them it's because they're knuckle-dragging Neanderthals, right? You would never be insulted or incensed by any act intended to enrage ~your~ pieties because you have none, right?
jamieLM | Apr 05, 2011, 09:15 AM EDT
@Rebelforce, I'm sure the majority of Protestants are as "proud" of Jones as they and Catholics are of pedophile priests and pastors. The Protestants I know don't consider Jones and his ilk to be legitimate Christian pastors. They think they're hateful headcases.
TheOldPerfessor | Apr 05, 2011, 09:12 AM EDT
Hi, righties - do you remember this quote? "America treasures the relationship we have with our many Muslim friends, and we respect the vibrant faith of Islam which inspires countless individuals to lead lives of honesty, integrity, and morality. This year, may Eid also be a time in which we recognize the values of progress, pluralism, and acceptance that bind us together as a Nation and a global community. By working together to advance mutual understanding, we point the way to a brighter future for all." Did you believe it when George W. Bush said it? Does it trouble you that you have no enduring principles? That you just believe what Fox News tells you to believe on any given day? Think about it - if you still have working minds.
eiriamach | Apr 05, 2011, 07:31 AM EDT
So Irishphotograph finds in this article an opportunity to do some fear mongering to further the church's turn down the hell-bent path of fundamentalism. "Now who would it serve to tell a gospel that says the Crucifixion/Resurrection never happened? Satan of course!" Equally worrisome: on April 1, the Catholic News Service ran an article on how to find Satan behind every news story: "Exorcist boot camp: Church leaders call for more training against evil": "'People are afraid to believe there is a devil who can seriously affect their lives.... Few people want to face the fact that we're in a spiritual battle. People don't want conflict" he added.... Pope Benedict XVI has often spoken about the existence of the devil and, at the start of Lent, urged Christians to make a commitment to ... 'engage in spiritual battle against the spirit of evil.'" Yes, there's evil in the world. We made it, and we're responsible for undoing it and NOT by finding witches to burn for it. No, it isn't fear of the demonic or of conflict that will keep thinking people from engaging in this 21st century witch hunt for the 'devils' of Islam or secularism. A glance into history, such as O'Doherty gives in his final 4 paragraphs, is a good antidote to the devil-sniffing fever if it catches hold of you. Lots of orange juice and plenty of rest with a good history book might also help.
bogsidebunny | Apr 05, 2011, 02:13 AM EDT
"A fundamentalist Christian pastor in Florida recently burned a Koran to provoke Muslims around the globe.".........If you, representing the Irish community, really believe someone setting fire to a pile of paper is responsible for some unevolved, knuckle-dragging Neanderthals to commit murder Mr O'Doherty then it confims my belief the Irish are as thick as 2-planks.....You'd be better on the mark by blaming Michael Collins for the assination of JFK.
longislander1940 | Apr 04, 2011, 11:48 PM EDT
seanomelbourne- Jones should not be in the paper. to me he is not a real minister. He is only a person that is a tax dodger and a person that wants to be in the headlines. As far as FOX news try listening to it.
seanomelbourne | Apr 04, 2011, 06:42 PM EDT
The commonality between Jones and extreme muslims is frightening. Then you have beck,Limbaugh,Coulter and the rest of the Fox androids feeding the uninformed with hate. They are no different to Jones,Just a little more subtle in their hate speech.
jamieLM | Apr 04, 2011, 06:21 PM EDT
Regardless that many Muslim countries show no repect for the Bible and try to stamp out Christianity wherever they find it, this "pastor" is a whack-job whose antics do nothing to promote respect for Christians and Christianity. He's full of himself and needs psychiatric help ASAP!
cathy/marty | Apr 04, 2011, 06:04 PM EDT
Without reading the artical,I say maybe we should put this fool on trial.Where did this clown come from???
cathy/marty | Apr 04, 2011, 06:01 PM EDT
Some fool burns the koran and the nutie Muslims kill people. Is this what we are protecting. Get out troops out now. Let them kill one another. I can not believe what is happening. These nut cases be head people, stone woman and we feel sorry for them.Goodby Muslims have a great after life.
Irishphotograph | Apr 04, 2011, 05:43 PM EDT
Paradigm! Jones does not violate the 2nd Commandment for its written Galatians 1:8 "But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse"! Muslims are burning their fellow country men because of their faith in Jesus! the very same Muslims who are offended
McNamara31 | Apr 04, 2011, 05:38 PM EDT
The political (reality show) atmosphere in the US has given these idiots (like this pastor) the courage to do these things. When you have the likes of Linbaugh, Beck, Hannity and Palin filling the ill informed with hate on a daily basis you have to expect these types of actions.
Paradigm | Apr 04, 2011, 05:03 PM EDT
Jones has forgotten the Second Great Commandment - like unto the first to love the Lord your God etc - and "Thou shalt Love Thy Neighbour as Thyself". On these TWO COMMANDMENTS hang ALL the Law and the Prophets. And who is my neighbour? Even a Samaritan!!!
Rebelforce | Apr 04, 2011, 04:31 PM EDT
Protestants sure must be "proud" of this ignoramus. "The Rev" Terry Jones ranks right up there with the likes of Ian Paisley and Fred Phelps in the pantheon of Protestant ministers inciting hatred.
hancock | Apr 04, 2011, 03:59 PM EDT
Whats worse a kook in Florida burning a book, or a bunch of murdering Muslim fanatics? You can't make this up.
Sparklet | Apr 04, 2011, 03:06 PM EDT
I'm sure the UN workers who were beheaded would be so thrilled. It's not the Koran that's at fault - it's a minority of the people who follow it, and whilst not wanting to kowtow to them, surely a little discretion should be exercised for the sake of those Christians currently serving or working in Muslim countries?
srdools | Apr 04, 2011, 02:34 PM EDT
He has the right in the USA to do this, the muslims don't have the right to murder(period)Just ignore this guy and let him and his crowd be alone. The media is stoking this fire.
Scrivner | Apr 04, 2011, 02:15 PM EDT
While I agree that this "pastor" is not for my taste, I would llike to point out that OUR basic values include freedom of speech and freedom of religion. If we base our actions on fears of "offending" these tribesmen we are being ruled by these tribesmen. Personally, I have enough trouble accepting legitimate authority, but surrendering my liberty to such self-selected no-nothing extremists is a no-go. Another Charlie-the-Hammer may arise! (the last is alluding to Charles Martell, more than just a brandy)
jerrydonovan | Apr 04, 2011, 01:56 PM EDT
I believe his own daughter left his church as she said that it was NOT a church but a cult.
SingleDonald | Apr 04, 2011, 12:54 PM EDT
I applaud Cahir's article. ALL fundamentalists are extremests! The killing of 10 United Nations employees in Afghanistan, however, is the fault of the Taliban, or whatever fundamentalist Muslim sect committed those despicable acts. The provacator has no blood on his hands, despite his fanaticism. Is blood on Martin Luther King's hands, because of the sometimes violent demonstrations that took place, to supress the Civil Rights Movement? I think not. Concerning putting the Prophet Mohammed on trial, I could actually present evidence for the defense. A segment of "60 Minutes" showed a Christian monastary, in Muslim Turkey. The Patriarch displayed a document on a wall, which bore Mohammed's handprint, as he was an illiterate. The document said, in arabic, that no people of other faiths should be persecuted, if they chose NOT to convert to Islam. I believe in the authenticity of this document. It is the fanatical fundamentalist Muslims who pervert the teachings of their Propher, and tarnish his name!
Trealach | Apr 04, 2011, 12:20 PM EDT
Jones is a man who was dropped on his head as a baby. His family should consider suing the gynecologist and hospital - because NO WAY did God create such an EVIL being - Jones puts Satan in the shade.
TheOldPerfessor | Apr 04, 2011, 11:58 AM EDT
If Jesus could come down and visit this church he might have a hard time finding any of his teachings inside. Christian extremists have invented a religion of hate, keeping nothing but the name.
antoman | Apr 04, 2011, 11:08 AM EDT
Why has'nt this pastor established a township in Ghana like Jim Jesus Jones?
dmdowner | Apr 04, 2011, 10:58 AM EDT
He is no pastor nor a Christian in my book. He has no respect for others and was the direct cause of the deaths in Afghanistan. Christ loved all people -even those who hated him. Real Christians should follow Christ's example, not this unholy man.
jflanagan | Apr 04, 2011, 10:37 AM EDT
This pastor, with a following of about 24 parishioners (is it a wonder there are so many)is, like the Westboros (the church of incest is best), looking for publicity. Even though he is an idiot, that does not justify killing people halfway around the world. The Islamic people in Afghanistan are a tribe of uncivilized thugs and to treat them with any regard is a waste of time. It upsets me when someone burns the American Flag or burns any book but I don't attack them because we are civilized.
CarolMaske | Apr 04, 2011, 10:37 AM EDT
I agree. Terry Jones needs a brain transplant - urgently! I hope the Justice Department can find grounds to arrest and punish him for his horrible and inflammatory actions. He has the blood of those innocent UN people on his hands and the fact that he is the proximate cause of those deaths completely escapes him! Further, the fact that he thinks he is a "Christian" makes him certifiably insane in my mind. This guy Jones is a nut job that needs to be put in a jail or at the very least, in a long term psychiatric facility. He is clearly a danger to himself and other people. My heart breaks for the lives he has destroyed and I want justice for them. It is the least we can do as Americans.
Irishphotograph | Apr 04, 2011, 10:36 AM EDT
Check out Compass Direct stories of Christian believers being burnt alive by Muslims! and they Muslims cry about a book!..to burn one person for their Faith in Jesus is more than burning all the Bibles in the world
Irishphotograph | Apr 04, 2011, 10:30 AM EDT
Islam is built upon the word of 1 man who denounces the Crucifixion of Jesus which is written about by Jewish historians, the Romans & the followers of Christ..belief in the Resurrection is central to Salvation..Now who would it serve to tell a gospel that says the Crucifixion/Resurrection never happened? Satan of course! The Bible the account of many, the Quran the account of 1 man & its written that even Satan can appear as an angel of Light.
WalterJ | Apr 04, 2011, 10:24 AM EDT
Not only is he a nutcase but a criminal co-conspiritor to the murders of the UN members killed last week. I live in Florida and I belive he should be expelled from the state after he is tarred and feathered (with white feathers of course).
rugbyplayer | Apr 04, 2011, 10:23 AM EDT
Jones is just another fundamentalist American religious maniac bent on publicity despite his horrendous role in the murders of innocents in Pakistan. Send this fool to the Court in the Hague for complicity to commit murder, find him guilty and hang him for murder!
LinLinisme | Apr 04, 2011, 10:18 AM EDT
Everyone is afraid of the Muslims. People are afraid to even post their opinions. That's is how they win, through fear and intimidation
floridafinn | Apr 04, 2011, 10:10 AM EDT
De-frock the guy! An idiot and shame for Florida. Somebody get the muzzle and tie his hands. Drop him off in Yemen.
