American pastor plans to put Mohammad on trial

A fundamentalist Christian pastor in Florida recently burned a Koran to provoke Muslims around the globe. His cheap theatrics worked of course, leading to widespread violence and multiple murders, including the killings of UN staff last week.

And despite irrefutable evidence that his actions led to the unrest, the minister - Terry Jones - said this week that he was completely unrepentant.

In fact, he said, he was contemplating putting the Islamic prophet Mohammed "on trial" and then he vowed to lead an anti-Islam protest outside the biggest mosque in America.

The Koran, said Jones, incites violence. Apparently irony is not one of Jone's strong points. Neither are international relations or American foreign policy.

So the question seems to be: who's worse, our fundamentalists or theirs?

Perhaps Jones is anxious to see the Book of Revelations open. Many fundamentalist Christians do share that particular impatience. The temptation to help it along must be quite severe at times.

If you often feel disconnected from the wider world and most of the people you share it with, if in fact you never really cared for it at all - and if you're secretly anxious for the world to come - then perhaps the titanically stupid provocations of a man like Jones become a little easier to understand.

It's as old as history, this particular fundamentalist death match. And history shows us the same result whenever it erupts: death and darkness.

When the Christian hordes overran Alexandria in the fourth century they put the pagans who built it to the sword, they sent the Jews into exile and they turned that fabled city's centuries old library - one of the greatest centuries old repositories Hellenic knowledge in the known world - into a cow shed.

It took humanity twelve hundred years to climb out of the thick fundamentalist darkness that descended after that pointless conflict. Twelve hundred years.

The fundamentalist are at our gates again (both at home and abroad) and we owe them an answer, and it needs to be loud and clear. The sleep of reason brings forth monsters.

"So the question seems to be, who's worse, our fundamentalists or theirs?" -The shame is, Cahir is so morally stunted that he really can't seem to answer his own question. Fundamentalist Pastor Jones burnt a BOOK made of ink and paper. The Afghani Muslim Fundamentalist murderers who butchered the UN workers were thousands of miles away from this event which they never even witnessed, yet they felt completely justified in MURDERING the Muslim guards at the UN compound and non-Muslim UN staff there, just as they would have felt justified murdering any other innocent people ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD (including Ireland), because they were angry. These UN workers had no connection to the Koran-burning. Cahir can't see a problem with that, can't really figure out if one act is more loathsome than the other? It appears there really isn't much basis for discussion when our side is holding out for the rule of law, and Cahir's side is holding out for the right to commit whatever atrocities they wish upon us whenever they get angry. Then they expect us to honor and respect their "religion." Does it make me one of EIRAMACH'S "anti-Muslim ranters" to say that one should not waste time trying to negotiate with such creatures - their values are so far away from those of civilized people as to make it as though one were negotiating with rats or hyenas or other wild beasts. These are not civilized attitudes, these are not civilized behaviors, these are not civilized people.
Terry Jones is not truly a man of god, he's just another terrorist.
Which Muslim country would that be?
No, maloney, the anti-Muslim ranters cannot "shut up" anyone. As for the liberals, progressives, and others whose minds are open to facts: we value civil discourse and have gone in search of it elsewhere.
Looks like the last 4 posts have shut the liberals up real quick. What's wrong, can't handle the truth?
The funny part is they would kill these lefty morons on this site, who defend them, first.
I'm sick and tired of all this Muslim non-sense. America should stop travel between Muslim countries, and stop migration to American by Muslims. They are 1% of the American Population, and cause 90% of our problems.
@ SingleDonald - Before volunteering to defend Islam, it would be wise to read the Qu'ran - the whole thing, not just part of it. 60 Miutes, like other MSM folks, broadcasts only what it wants you to see, the most "liberal" version possible. While the first few chapters of the Qu'ran says what 60 Minutes showed (At the beginning of the Qu'ran it calls Christians and Jews "Brothers of the Book". tWhat they didn't tell is "The Rest of the Story"). Further on in the Qu'ran it is made explicitly clear that the Jews and Christians are barbarian infidels. The later chapters of the Qu'ran specifically state they should be treated as enemies, their religions and governments destroyed. The Qu'ran also states that Muslims shouldn't lie to each other, but it is perfectly acceptable to lie to an enemy, even to go as far as "converting" to a different religion, as long as the lies help in overcoming the non-Islam Infidels And the Muslim stays "pure in his heart" as to his relationship with Allah. When it comes to women, an example is made when a Muslim woman brought a complaint against her Muslim husband and submitted it for adjudication - her complaint basically boiled down to her husband didn't care for her as he should and she was a victim of marital rape. The answer from the Imams, directly from Allah, was that it had long been held that another cannot dictate to a man how to "plow his fields". If you can defend those and other things in the Qu'ran, your understanding of that hateful book is completely different than mine.
Olovely can you kill people for insulting you?
OH yes there is a Devil & he's alive along with his black suited helpers and he lives in the Vatican living like a Royal King with all his stolen Gold & Jewels from past wars. He sits on his Throne Eating the Best Foods of the world while the poor are starving if he really cared for the poor he would sell all those Pagan Statues and the Vatican with all its rich glitter,Its all a Sham!!!Wake up People ! time to cut off the funds for the Devils
This man is the one insiting violence ...funny we never hear of yashuah putting down someone else. Maybe someone should ship him to Iraq or Iran or Afganistan.
Right bogsidebunny. Tomorrow I'm going to set fire to a tricolor and an American flag. There's nothing whatsoever provocative or insulting about deciding to commit those acts. If people get annoyed by them it's because they're knuckle-dragging Neanderthals, right? You would never be insulted or incensed by any act intended to enrage ~your~ pieties because you have none, right?
@Rebelforce, I'm sure the majority of Protestants are as "proud" of Jones as they and Catholics are of pedophile priests and pastors. The Protestants I know don't consider Jones and his ilk to be legitimate Christian pastors. They think they're hateful headcases.
Hi, righties - do you remember this quote? "America treasures the relationship we have with our many Muslim friends, and we respect the vibrant faith of Islam which inspires countless individuals to lead lives of honesty, integrity, and morality. This year, may Eid also be a time in which we recognize the values of progress, pluralism, and acceptance that bind us together as a Nation and a global community. By working together to advance mutual understanding, we point the way to a brighter future for all." Did you believe it when George W. Bush said it? Does it trouble you that you have no enduring principles? That you just believe what Fox News tells you to believe on any given day? Think about it - if you still have working minds.
So Irishphotograph finds in this article an opportunity to do some fear mongering to further the church's turn down the hell-bent path of fundamentalism. "Now who would it serve to tell a gospel that says the Crucifixion/Resurrection never happened? Satan of course!" Equally worrisome: on April 1, the Catholic News Service ran an article on how to find Satan behind every news story: "Exorcist boot camp: Church leaders call for more training against evil": "'People are afraid to believe there is a devil who can seriously affect their lives.... Few people want to face the fact that we're in a spiritual battle. People don't want conflict" he added.... Pope Benedict XVI has often spoken about the existence of the devil and, at the start of Lent, urged Christians to make a commitment to ... 'engage in spiritual battle against the spirit of evil.'" Yes, there's evil in the world. We made it, and we're responsible for undoing it and NOT by finding witches to burn for it. No, it isn't fear of the demonic or of conflict that will keep thinking people from engaging in this 21st century witch hunt for the 'devils' of Islam or secularism. A glance into history, such as O'Doherty gives in his final 4 paragraphs, is a good antidote to the devil-sniffing fever if it catches hold of you. Lots of orange juice and plenty of rest with a good history book might also help.
