Snow storms couldn’t keep me away from my Irish Christmas at home in Dublin, but they are curtailing many of the festivities. After a few days cooped up in the house with cups of Barry’s tea and news reports of airport closures, it was time to venture out into the unprecedented 10inches of snow. Grafton Street, the local pub and Christmas parties were calling.

Much like an Irish summer, the people of Ireland have been struggling to adapt their rain-proof wardrobes to make them snow proof. Last January we did with what we had but this time we’re taking no chances. Snow boots are selling out and all that ski gear bought for trips that we can no longer afford have become essential walking-to-work gear instead.

Since taxis are as rare as a patch of grass in the city it’s time to re-think the customary Christmas sparkly dress and stilettos. It’s more like a good pair of jeans, water-proof boots and a nice top, with a cardigan, two coats, two scarves, a hat and gloves are all the rage.

On the plus side, I’ve taken the opportunity to prepare myself for my first New York snow and learn how to make mulled wine, hot whiskey and Irish coffee. I’m just hoping my friends get home on time to taste them and the snow clears on time for Leopardstown on the 26th!
