Now up in his seventies, the flute and concertina player from Kilrush, Co. Clare harkens back to the days of his Kilrush neighbor Mrs. Crotty, the iconic concertina player from Clare.
Growing up amidst the era of house dances, he helped keep that spirit and part of the tradition alive after moving to Dublin to work, appearing in Sean O’Riada’s Ceoltoiri Chulainn which gave way to the Chieftains.
He was also in the very tasty fleadh champion Castle Ceili Band, often found playing at the Mrs. Crotty’s Club on Bridge Street along the Liffey.
Coming over to lead flute workshops at the Northeast Tionol in East Durham, he is working in some workshops and a concert or two while stateside.
Coming up this Saturday, October 13 at 7 p.m. at the New York Irish Center (1040 Jackson Avenue, Long Island City) is a rare opportunity to hear Tubridy and his old Castle Ceili band mate, box player James Keane in concert along with Felix Dolan. You can expect the best of Clare music and tunes that night.
On Sunday at the same locale you can take a sean nos dance workshop with Tubridy at 2 p.m. followed by the Ull Mor seisiun running from 4-7 p.m. Call Maureen Donachie at 845-499-3703.
Tubridy will also join Landmark Tavern seisiun leader Don Meade at his Monday night session from 8-11 p.m. at 46th Street and 11th Avenue in Manhattan. Later after the East Durham Tionol, Tubridy will be hosted by Boston Percussive Dance led by Kieran Jordan in Cambridge on Wednesday, October 24 for another sean nos dance workshop.
