The Belfast-born Peter Maguire, who is based in Boston these days, is a powerful flute player who has made America his home since 1995.
He is the son of accordion player Tommy Maguire from whom he learned his music early before taking tuition from the legendary Seamus Tansey on the wooden flute.
New Yorkers will have several opportunities to sample his music this weekend, with the first being Friday the 25th at the opening Blarney Star Concert Series for 2013 at NYU’s Glucksman Ireland House in Greenwich Village.
Maguire is teaming up with another northern star in Armagh, piper Cillian Vallely, whose “open” piping style should match up marvelously with Peter’s percussive and highly ornamented style. Vallely makes his home in New York City when he isn’t touring with his band Lunasa or engaged in other piping projects.
The drill is for two sets of music starting at 9 p.m. For more information contact Ireland House at 212-998-3950 or visit blarneystar.com
(FYI, the next concert in the series features another piping institution in New York on February 8 when Jerry O’Sullivan revisits the historic contributions of the piper O’Farrelly and his collection of music from the 19th century from which O’Sullivan has produced two wonderful CDs).
On Sunday the 27th from 2-4 p.m. Peter Maguire will lead a workshop in conjunction with the Craobh Úll Mór CCÉ at the New York Irish Center in Long Island City (www.newyorkirishcenter.org
) with a special emphasis on style, tone and ornamentation (and not tunes) which are all characteristic of his music playing reputation.
Flute and whistle players might derive the most benefit since those are Maguire’s instruments, but there would be lessons to be learned for any intermediate or advanced melody musicians as well.
Lessons are $35 for Craobh Ull Mor CCE members and $40 for others. Call 845-499-3703 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
Maguire will finish off his New York visit with a guest appearance at the weekly Monday night music session at the Landmark Tavern from 8-11 p.m. at 46th Street and 11th Avenue.
