Victoria Beckham, Justin Bieber sadly on our minds on July 4th

It is July 4th and what is America thinking of as they celebrate that glorious day?

Not very much if you check Google trends and Yahoo trends, the two major indicators of where American heads are at at any given moment.

Would you believe Justin Bieber and Victoria Beckham?

Yes, those are the top two trending names as we make it to the holiday.

It's kind of sad really. Victoria is being advised to give up singing and stick to fashion.

Justin shares a birthday with some blogger who imagines they were born the same year as well.

So America is focused on a footballer's wife who had a mediocre music career and the latest cookie-cutter teen pop idol who will burst on the scene and disappear as surely as the July 4th fireworks in a few hours.

Is it just me or are we stuck in an endless Seinfeld show, where nothing is important and only the ultra trivial matters?

Was it for this that Washington created the revolution, that Jefferson wrote the greatest documents of our history, that armies clashed on darkling plains in order to secure American freedom?

Afraid so folks.

Not that there is anything wrong with Victoria and Justin, as Jerry himself might say.

But it is kind of sad really.

Ironically, neither one is American, a vacuous washed up semi-singer and a future washed-up semi-singer. We need a reality check in this country.
i buy it It is sad------but then what else is new? but that the "old" returns. We simply need a longer evolving time is all-----a LOT longer. Have faith it will happen
I agree. People are looking for an escape, too much bad news and doomsday scenarios but these are the wrong idols for me, poor Victoria looks like she needs a good meal and I thought Justin was a young girl when I first saw him, I have never even heard him sing. I think they could do better with the idols they have chosen to show on the 4th of July. I would like ot know what our troops are doing on this Holiday. How th elegl immigrants are celebrating their new home. I'm sure the news could have done better.
is i just me, or, are them ti-ts fake? like her whole exsistance!
You're absolutely right, vincem13, about George Washington. Other men were the catalyst that set events in motion that led to the Revolutionary War. Washington takes credit for holding it together long enough to win. When it comes to Justin Beiber, jamthecat, you're not missing anything.
Although I love trivia games- that's where trivia belongs. I couldn't agree more! Unfortunately I must disagree on your statement about George Washington. Until he was called upon to lead our troops into battle, he stayed pretty much on the sidelines. We have people like Thom Paine, John and Sam Adams, Thom Jefferson and Rev. Jonathan Mayhew and many other fine thinkers, writers and speakers for the spark that touched off the flame of rebellion.
Who's Justin Beiber? And the only reason I even know about Victoria Beckham is she married a footballer named David. But then...I actually read and don't watch much television; guess that makes me weird.
I so agree.
The first thing that struck me was Victoria's color in the picture. EEUUWW!! I think we are concerned about more important things but sometimes we just have to dive into triviality to stay sane. How much bad news are we supposed to take in each and every day?
Pu-leese. There were millions of Americans who celebrated the 4th of July without one single thought about Victoria and Justin. A lot of us don't give a twit about either one of them.
Sorry, aren't you supposed to be a "gossip girl"? This column seems a bit puritanical for that beat.
