Musician Mary Robbins, 78, died on Sunday of a heart arrhythmia at her home in Esteban Cantu, Mexico, while Tim’s folk singer father Gilbert Lee (Gil) Robbins lost his battle with prostate cancer on April 5 at the age of 80.

The couple had been married for 59 years.

‘The Shawshank Redemption’ star Tim – who split from partner of 23 years Susan Sarandon in 2009 – said his mother "had a calm and cheerful demeanour, a sharp wit, a gentle spirit and a generous and loving heart".

Speaking after his father’s death earlier this month, Tim had said: "His commitment to social justice was evident to us from an early age, as was his infectious mischievous sense of humour. His passing has created great sadness for all of us and our mother but we take comfort in knowing that the angels will soon be soothed by the songs coming from his beautiful baritone voice."

Mary successfully battled colon cancer in the past and until her death volunteered her services at a clinic near the couple's home.

Gil and Mary are survived by sons Tim and David; two daughters, Adele and Gabrielle and four grandchildren.
