The 37-year-old actress - who gave birth to daughter Olive, her first child with husband Will Kopelman 10 weeks ago - had a troubled childhood and a difficult relationship with her parents and Drew is determined Olive's childhood will be the exact opposite.
She said: "I'm trying to figure out how to do things differently than I grew up with. I know a lot of what works and what doesn't. I've got some really great blueprints of what not to do. I will have boundaries and consistency and protection and traditions.
"I'm very protective of her right now. I know that unless we were to move into a bomb shelter that she will have to go out into the world and be exposed to a life that I've set up for myself for 37 years.
"I can't wait to pick her up from school - just being in the line of cars when she gets out. I want her to live a life where she knows we will be there. That is everything to me. That is what I wanted when I was a kid and it's what my kid will have."
Drew also revealed having her husband Will, 35, come from a "strong family" has made all the difference.
She explained to People magazine: "Will's a great dad and a good husband. I really wanted a wonderful, traditional home for my kid. Will comes from a strong family, he provides a strong family, it's amazing. For people who didn't have the strongest families or traditional families, if you can create that, you have a second chance. It just makes me so emotional because it's like a miracle."
The full interview with Drew and exclusive photos of the actress with her family are available in this week's issue of People magazine.
