Ireland first competed in the Olympics as an Independent state in 1924. Prior to this Irish athletes competed on behalf of Britain, Canada the US and Africa. In 1908, teams styled 'Ireland' competed in hockey, polo and bicycle polo at the first London Olympic Games.

This year there will be 65 Irish athletes competing in the Summer Olympics in sports ranging from athletics, cycling, judo and sailing.

5. Tipperary-born Thomas Kiely (1869 – 1951) paid his own fare to the 1904 Summer Olympics in St Louis. Despite being offered sponsorship from Britain and the US, he refused to compete with countries opting instead to compete for Ireland. He won a gold medal in the decathlon but is listed as a member of the British team in IOC records.

6. The 1956 Olympics were Ireland’s most successful, with five medals.

7. Dublin and the Olympics: Dublin has twice bid to host the Olympic Games  -- in 1936 & 1940

7. The first Irish-born winner of an Olympic gold medal was John Pius Boland, a native of Dublin, who won the Tennis Singles at Athens in 1896

8. The legendary Pat O’Callaghan won gold at the 1928 games in the hammer throw, Ireland’s first medal at the Olympics.

9.  Michael Carruth of Dublin  became the first Irishman to win an Olympic gold medal in boxing in the Barcelona Olympics.

10. A four-times world lightweight champion, Katie Taylor will be the first female boxer to represent Ireland in the Olympics this summer.
