Rory McIlroy will seek comfort from his USPGA trials and tribulations in the arms of new girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki.

The US Open champion finished in a disappointing tied 64th position at the Atlanta Athletic Club on Sunday after a closing 74 let him eleven over par for the final major of the year.

McIlroy had to play through the pain of a wrist injury picked up on only the third hole in Thursday’s first round but survived to make the cut.

He was well off the pace set by winner Keegan Bradley however and McIlroy revealed afterwards that he will take a break from golf this week in Cincinnati - where Wozniacki just happens to be playing in a tennis tournament.

He then plans to return to his Belfast home for a couple of days before travelling to support Wozniacki in New York ahead of the US Open.

Asked why he was going to Cincinnati – and not house hunting in Florida as planned – McIlroy smiled and said: “I hear it’s nice this time of year.”

The 22-year-old, who split with long term girlfriend Holly Sweeney after he met Wozniacki at a boxing match in Germany, will return to golf in Switzerland in the middle of September.

McIlroy added: “I am going to take a couple of weeks off to rest the wrist. I’m going to Cincinnati for a few days, home for the weekend and then go back out to New York.

“It will be nice and I will enjoy my two weeks off.”

Padraig Harrington finished alongside McIlroy on eleven over and in a tie for 64th place.
The three time Major winner must now play in this week’s Wyndham Championship in North Carolina to try to qualify for the PGA Tour FedEx Cup play-offs.
