Fighting Irish Quarterback Everett Golson will undergo test to determine his readiness to start on Saturday.
Golson is undergoing a full physical exertion test on Monday to see how the Sophomore’s body reacts to strenuous cardiovascular activity post-concussion. It is unlikely Golson will start against the Sooners this week if his results are poor.
Notre Dame coach believes in Golson as a starter and feels this examination is a just a precaution to playing on Saturday.
"As I said earlier, he was cleared (to practice) because he had passed all those (concussion) tests – they want to just make sure we run him hard (Monday and elevate his blood pressure and make sure,"
After suffering a concussion from a punishing blow suffered against Stanford in the final,
Golson was removed from the game and has not seen action since. Kelly did clear the quarterback to practice last Wednesday but was not convinced Golson was ready to start against BYU.
According to coach Kelly “he took reps, but the reps he took were really more of 7-on-7 and some team reps," Kelly said. "We really haven't run him physically like he would in a game situation after a big run and maybe he comes back back and runs an option play. I just want to make sure we cover everything. We expect that go well. If it goes well, now it's just full steam ahead to Oklahoma."
Luckily the Fighting Irish have a quarterback insurance policy in Tommy Rees. The Junior backup has successfully relieved Golson in three games this season and started against BYU in leading the Irish to a 17-14 win. Rees has thrown for 335 yards and one touchdown for a 138.4 QB rating.
