Managerless Sheffield Wednesday has been told to forget about a cheeky bid to land Ireland coach Roy Keane as their new boss.

Wednesday owner Milan Mandaric revealed at the weekend that he wants to talk to Keane about succeeding the sacked Dave Jones as boss at Hillsborough.

But Keane has shown no interest in the job whatsoever and the FAI Are adamant that he will remain as Martin O’Neill’s number two even if Wednesday offer him a return to management in his own right.

“It is not something we have been approached about and it is not something we are worried about,” said an FAI source.

The Irish Independent reports that the FAI have received no official approach from Sheffield Wednesday regarding Keane’s availability, just weeks after he signed a two year deal along with O’Neill.

Mandaric is keen to pursue his interest in the Corkman however.

The multi-millionaire Wednesday owner told the Sunday Times, “If I am going to do anything with Roy, I will have to call the federation (FAI) and see if I can get a chance to talk to him.

“You have to go through the channels for something like that. I will probably look into that.

“Roy took the job with Martin O’Neill so it would be difficult to move him out of there. I would like to look at him. He has a superb personality and won promotion with Sunderland.”

Keane is on a five man shortlist drawn up by Mandaric for the vacancy, but O’Neill has said recently that he believes Keane is with Ireland for the long haul.

O’Neill said at the time of his appointment, “I am taking Roy absolutely on trust here and he wants to complete it as well.

“Maybe I’m speaking for him, but I’ve got complete trust in Roy that that’s what he wants to do.

“I don’t think he’s wishing to run out at the drop of a hat. I think he’s appreciative of the opportunity that this is affording him and I think it’s up to him then to push on. And that’s what I expect.”
