Irish golf was back in the winner’s enclosure in Portugal on Sunday when Offaly’s Shane Lowry produced a stunning final round to win the Portuguese Masters at Vilamoura.

The 25-year-old became only the second player to win on the European Tour as both an amateur and a professional, having previously won the 2009 Irish Open at Baltray.

England’s Ross Fisher three putted on the 18th to hand the title to Lowry, but the shot of the day came when the Irishman chipped in for an eagle two on the 11th.

Now Lowry has abandoned plans to play in the U.S. Tour’s qualifying school this week after winning a $500,000 check.

“I cannot believe this. I can’t explain how I feel really. It’s a dream come true -- I’m over the moon,” he said.

“Everyone was referring to me as the fella who won the Irish Open as an amateur, but now I’ve won such a prestigious event I don’t know what to say.”

Roared on by holiday makers from Ireland, on a course owned by Irish company Oceanico, Lowry came from four down overnight to win.

He added, “It was like playing in Ireland. It was crazy. It was great. When that chip went, I thought then this could be my day and thankfully it is.

“We had a long wait on the 12th tee which was good, I had time to compose myself.”
